Flagsmith vs Unleash
Flagsmith and Unleash both let you run the platform yourself, yet they meter the bill in different units. Flagsmith counts API requests, with 50,000 a month free and one million on Start-Up, so a quiet product with a large team stays cheap. Unleash charges $75 for every seat on its hosted Enterprise plan and treats client-side users and service connections as unlimited, so a busy product with a small team stays cheap. Flagsmith's code is mostly BSD-3-Clause, while Unleash's repository shows AGPL-3.0, and that licence difference matters for legal review.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you expect many engineers, product managers and QA people to open the dashboard but only moderate traffic, because Flagsmith's Start-Up plan covers three members and one million requests for $45 a month. You also want A/B and multivariate testing on a plan that costs far less than Unleash's per-seat Enterprise tier.
you have a small group of engineers serving a very large audience, because Unleash leaves client-side users and service connections unlimited and includes 53 million cloud API requests a month. You also want four-eyes approvals, change requests and SAML single sign-on without moving up to a contract.

Where they differ
Flagsmith 2 · Unleash 3 · open 1- 01
Why the second developer costs more at Flagsmith
Flagsmith's free plan allows one team member and one project, with 50,000 requests a month and unlimited flags and environments. Start-Up raises that to three team members and one million requests at $45 monthly or $40 billed yearly. Scale-Up includes five members and allows up to 20 at $50 each per month. Teams that grow in people hit these steps early, so Flagsmith is at its weakest when headcount rises faster than traffic.

Seat minimums and the 53 million request allowance
Unleash's Pay-As-You-Go Enterprise plan is $75 per seat per month, billed monthly by card with no contract, and a self-hosted install needs at least five seats. Cloud includes 53 million API requests a month, then $5 per extra million. Flagsmith bills extra API calls from $50 per million, decreasing with volume. Per request, Unleash is far cheaper, and per person, Flagsmith is far cheaper.
Depends on the buyer
- 03
Open source on your own servers
Flagsmith describes its platform as open source, mostly BSD-3-Clause with a few MIT repositories, and offers Cloud, Self-hosted and Private Cloud. Unleash offers free Docker self-hosting, and its GitHub repository shows AGPL-3.0, although the site pages we read name no licence. The free Unleash edition is capped at one project, two environments and 5,000 flags per instance, and the pages we read for Flagsmith show no such cap.

Approvals, SSO and audit trail placement
At Flagsmith, SAML and SSO, roles, permissions, change requests and audit logs all start on Scale-Up at $300 monthly or $250 yearly. Unleash lists four-eyes approvals, change request workflows, SAML 2.0 or OIDC single sign-on, stale-flag tracking and audit logs kept up to two years on both its tiers, including the card-paid one. A company that needs change control early reaches it for less commitment at Unleash.

Experiments and the data they need
Flagsmith counts experiment users separately, up to 100,000 on the free plan, and puts A/B and multivariate testing on Start-Up, with a bring-your-own experimentation warehouse arriving on Scale-Up. Unleash's own weak point is stated in our data: experiments are flag variants without a dedicated statistics workbench. Anyone who wants testing inside the flag tool will find Flagsmith closer to that.

Where the company sits and how regions are handled
Flagsmith is operated by Bullet Train Limited, company number 12353266, registered in London, though the about page does not name a country. Unleash cloud runs in EU or US regions, with data residency offered in either, and its terms name Bricks Software AS in Oslo, Norway for customers outside the US and Bricks Software Inc. in California for US customers. Unleash states its region options more concretely on the pages we read.
Edge: Unleash
When neither fits
Look elsewhere if you want flags managed by a marketer in a visual editor, or if you need a free plan with no cap on members. ConfigCat and GrowthBook are the two other tools in this category worth pricing next to these.
Flagsmith or Unleash: questions
3 answersWhich of the two stays free for longer if I only run a hobby project?
Flagsmith's free plan gives 50,000 requests a month, one team member and one project, with unlimited flags and environments.
Unleash's free open-source edition has no seat limit but only if you host it yourself, within one project, two environments and 5,000 flags. For a single developer with no server, Flagsmith's hosted free plan is the easier start.
Can I try the paid tiers before paying anything?
Flagsmith gives a 14-day free trial on both Start-Up and Scale-Up. Unleash gives a 14-day trial of Pay-As-You-Go without a credit card. After that, Unleash bills monthly by card with no contract, and Flagsmith's yearly billing saves more than 10 percent.
What happens to the invoice when traffic triples?
On Flagsmith, requests beyond the plan's allowance are billed from $50 per million, falling as volume rises.
On Unleash, usage above 53 million cloud API requests costs $5 per extra million, and client-side users stay unlimited. A traffic spike therefore moves a Flagsmith invoice far more than an Unleash one.
