When a source changes on a Tuesday
Fivetran handles schema drift better than anything else in this category: new columns arrive in the warehouse instead of failing the load, and when a source changes its API the vendor fixes the connector. With Airbyte you can repair a broken connector yourself without waiting on a backlog, but someone has to. For hands-off reliability, Fivetran leads.

Owning the pipeline
Airbyte is the only product here you can run on your own servers with connector source code you already hold, which answers the exit question directly. Fivetran is a managed service whose connectors are the vendor's to maintain. A team that wants to inspect, modify and keep its pipelines regardless of the supplier gets that only from Airbyte.

Two very different bills
Airbyte self-hosted has no licence fee and costs staff time; its cloud is priced by volume and that model has been revised more than once. Fivetran counts monthly active rows, so constantly updated tables are expensive and the bill is hard to forecast before a source is connected. Which is cheaper depends on your engineers and your tables.

Airbyte has the largest catalogue because anyone may contribute, and quality ranges from production-grade to abandoned, so each connector you need must be checked for recent activity. Fivetran's connectors are maintained properly by the vendor. Breadth for niche sources favours Airbyte; consistency on the connectors you depend on favours Fivetran.

Are Airbyte connectors as reliable as Fivetran connectors?
It varies by connector. Airbyte's most used connectors are well maintained while the long tail of community ones is not, so check recent commits and open issues. Fivetran maintains its connectors itself and that reliability is the core of what it sells.
Does Airbyte or Fivetran handle data transformation?
Both assume the load-first pattern in which raw data lands in the warehouse and is transformed there with the warehouse's own compute. Fivetran has no transformation layer of its own. Our data does not describe one for Airbyte, so plan that step separately either way.
