Asana vs Trello

Trello is a board of cards that a small group can start using in minutes, while Asana is a planning layer for work that spans several teams. The money question differs too: Trello's free plan holds ten collaborators, Asana's holds two. Pick by whether you need to see a chain of dependent projects or just move cards.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Who fits on the free plan

Asana's Personal plan is described as being for one or two people, and its page shows 2 users. Trello Free allows up to 10 collaborators per Workspace, with unlimited cards but a ceiling of 10 boards. A five-person team can stay on Trello without paying. On Asana it must buy Starter.

    Cost once you pay

Asana asks $10.99 for Starter and $24.99 for Advanced, per seat monthly on an annual contract, and Enterprise is by quote. Trello is $5 (Standard) and $10 (Premium) per user per month billed annually, Enterprise $17.50. For ten people, Trello Premium costs less than Asana Starter.

    Planning views and reporting

Asana Starter already includes Timeline, Gantt views and reporting dashboards, and Advanced adds portfolios, goals and resource management. Trello gets Timeline, Calendar, Table, Dashboard and Map views only at Premium. Asana's reporting reaches across projects, which a set of separate boards does not.

    Getting data out and independence

Trello board JSON export keeps only the 1,000 most recent actions, CSV export needs Premium, and Trello cannot import JSON or CSV to rebuild a board. Trello, Inc. is an Atlassian subsidiary, with Atlassian headquartered in Sydney. Asana's country is given as the United States.

When neither fits

If you want a self-hosted or independent European tool, look at OpenProject or Taiga instead of either of these two.
