Trello alternatives: 13 project management tools compared

People who look for a Trello alternative usually hit the free plan's 10 boards and 10 collaborators, want views or exports that sit behind Premium, or want a vendor that is not Atlassian. They move to a task manager with more views, a flat-priced tool for larger teams, or a German or open source tool they can host.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Trello in our project management ranking are Asana, monday.com and ClickUp. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Asana if you want boards plus goals and capacity planning and can pay about twice the Trello seat price. All 13 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Project Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Trello.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Trello

#15 of 15 in our project management ranking

  • Pricing: Free plan; paid per user per month, published; Premium trial
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Small teams that track work as cards moving across a handful of boards
  • Not for: Programmes needing portfolio reporting, or buyers wanting an independent vendor
01

Why buyers look past Trello

  1. 01

The free plan has hard walls

Free Workspaces are limited to 10 collaborators, 10 boards and 250 Workspace command runs a month, with 10MB per file. A small team that adds an eleventh person or a board per client reaches those limits quickly, and Standard at $5 per user a month lifts boards and raises command runs to 1,000.

  2. 02

The useful views cost $10 a seat

Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views, plus unlimited command runs and simple data export, are listed under Premium at $10 per user per month billed annually ($12.50 monthly). A team that needs a schedule view therefore pays double the Standard seat price for every member.

  3. 03

Exit is partial and the owner is Atlassian

Any board member can export a board to JSON, but it holds only the 1,000 most recent actions, CSV board export needs Premium, and Trello states it cannot import JSON or CSV to recreate a board. Trello has belonged to Atlassian since early 2017, so buyers who want a vendor outside that group look elsewhere.

When Trello is still the right choice

Trello remains the right choice for a small team that tracks work as cards moving across a few boards. The free plan allows 10 collaborators and unlimited cards, Standard is $5 per user a month, and every paid plan is priced on its public page. If you need no timeline, no portfolio reporting and stay under 10 boards, a heavier tool adds setup time for views you will not open.

05

What moving off Trello involves

  1. 01

    Export before you cancel

Export each board to JSON from the board menu, and from a Premium Workspace export all boards in CSV and JSON. The JSON keeps only the 1,000 most recent actions per board, so comments older than that need the Workspace-wide export. Keep the files, because Trello cannot re-import them.

  2. 02

Plan for rebuilt boards, not an import

Because Trello cannot re-import its own export, assume lists become columns or statuses by hand or through the new tool's importer, which we did not verify, and check that checklists and labels survive. Move one live board first, run both tools for two weeks, then retire Trello once the team stops opening it.

Questions about replacing Trello

6 answers
What is the cheapest alternative to Trello?

For paid seats, OpenProject Enterprise starts at EUR 5.95 per user a month with a 25-user minimum, ClickUp Unlimited is $7 and Trello Standard is $5.

For free, OpenProject Community has no user minimum, and ClickUp and Wrike both publish a free plan. Compare limits, not only the price.

Is there a free alternative to Trello?

ClickUp's free plan has unlimited tasks and members with Kanban boards, MeisterTask allows 3 projects, Teamwork allows 5 projects and 5 users, and OpenProject Community is open source and free. Asana's free plan holds 2 users and monday.com's holds 2 seats.

Is there a European alternative to Trello?

MeisterTask, Zenkit, Stackfield and OpenProject state German vendors, and Teamwork is headquartered in Cork, Ireland. Trello's owner Atlassian lists Sydney as global headquarters and US entities in its privacy policy, so the country of Trello's owner is not a single fact.

Can I self-host a Trello alternative?

OpenProject can run on your own infrastructure in the Community edition, which is GPL v3, and Stackfield offers an on-premise edition. Trello is hosted by the vendor, and the other tools here are sold as cloud services unless their pricing pages say otherwise.

Which alternative suits a team larger than 10 people?

Trello's free plan stops at 10 collaborators. Basecamp prices by project, with unlimited users on Studio and above, and Zenkit Team has unlimited users. Wrike Team covers 2 to 15 users. Check what a per-seat tool costs at your headcount first.

Can I import my Trello boards?

Trello says it cannot import JSON or CSV files to recreate a board, and its own export is JSON or Premium CSV. Whether a given alternative imports Trello boards is not stated on the pages we checked, so test with one board before committing.
