ClickUp alternatives: 11 project management tools compared

ClickUp alternatives are sought by teams that adopted it for the breadth and then found the breadth is the cost. Some hit the limits of the free plan, some need a feature that sits on a higher tier, and some want data hosted in a specific region. They move to a narrower planner, a cheaper flat-rate tool, or a self-hosted option.

Short answer: The closest replacements for ClickUp in our project management ranking are Asana, monday.com and Notion. Choose Asana if cross-team reporting matters more than having every tool inside one app. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Project Management Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from ClickUp.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

ClickUp

#13 of 14 in our project management ranking

  • Pricing: Free tier; paid per user per month, published
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: A team that wants to replace four subscriptions with one
  • Not for: A team that values a small, fast, opinionated tool

Why buyers look past ClickUp

  1. 01

The free plan is a trial in practice

ClickUp's Free Forever plan allows unlimited members, but it caps storage at 60MB, workspaces at 5 spaces and whiteboards at 3, and it includes a single form. Unlimited storage, goals and native time tracking only arrive with the first paid plan. A team that outgrows the free plan is therefore choosing a vendor, not just adding seats.

  2. 02

The useful controls sit on the upper tiers

Advanced dashboards, webhooks and 5,000 automations a month belong to the Business plan, while custom roles, SSO and audit logs belong to Enterprise. Data residency in the US, Europe (Ireland) or Asia Pacific is also an Enterprise option. A company that needs the data in Europe has to ask for a quote rather than pick a published price.

  3. 03

AI is priced separately from the work plans

ClickUp lists its Brain AI plans on the pricing page at $9 and $28 a month (less when billed annually), apart from the Unlimited, Business and Enterprise plans. A team budgeting per seat for the work plan should expect a second line item once AI features are wanted, which is a reason some compare against tools that include theirs.

What each one does differently

Asana

United States · Free plan for 2 users; paid per user per month, published

Asana offers a free plan for up to 2 users and paid plans per user, with portfolios, goals and resource management on its Advanced plan. Time tracking is an add-on rather than built in, which is the reverse of ClickUp, where it comes with the first paid plan.

Switch from ClickUp if cross-team reporting matters more than having every tool inside one app.

monday.com

Israel · Free plan for 2 seats; paid per seat per month from 3 seats, published

monday.com sells seat-based tiers (Basic, Standard, Pro) with seat minimums and a free plan for 2 seats. Gantt views start on Standard and time tracking on Pro. Automations are capped per month by tier, so heavy automation users should read the allowance before comparing seat prices.

Switch from ClickUp if you want visual boards with tiered automation allowances and can meet the seat minimum.

monday.com, #10 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Notion

United States · Free plan, with limited blocks once a workspace has two members; paid per member per month, published

Notion is priced per member (Plus and Business), with guests free on every plan. Its tiers separate plans by page history, 7 days on Free and unlimited on Enterprise, and by security features such as SAML SSO on Business. It is a different pricing logic from ClickUp's feature ladder.

Switch from ClickUp if documents and a shared workspace come first and task tracking is secondary.

Notion, #14 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Wrike

United States · Free plan; Team and Business per user per month, published; Pinnacle and Apex by quote

Wrike has a free plan with unlimited users, then Team (2 to 15 users) and Business (5 to 200 users). Time tracking, resource management and budgeting only appear on the quoted Pinnacle plan, whereas ClickUp includes time tracking and resource management from its Unlimited plan.

Switch from ClickUp if a mid-sized organisation wants Gantt charts and is willing to quote for resource planning.

Wrike, #11 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Jira

Australia · Free to 10 users; paid per user per month, published

Atlassian presents Jira as project management with a free option, sold alongside Jira Service Management and Jira Align. We could not load its pricing tables in this review, so check the current free-plan and per-user limits before comparing. It is built around issue tracking, not an all-in-one workspace.

Switch from ClickUp if your work is mainly software delivery and issue tracking.

Jira, #12 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Teamwork.com

Ireland · Free plan for 5 users and 5 projects; paid per user per month with a 3-seat minimum, published; top plans by quote

Teamwork.com is priced per user with a free plan for 5 users and 5 projects. Billable time tracking and Gantt start on Basics (minimum 3 users), workload planning on Accelerate (minimum 5 users). It is shaped around client work, so internal-only teams pay for features they will not use.

Switch from ClickUp if you deliver projects to clients and need billable time next to the tasks.

Teamwork.com, #6 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Basecamp

United States · Free plan for one project; paid plans are flat monthly prices capped by active projects, with unlimited users from Studio upwards; published

Basecamp charges flat monthly prices instead of per seat: Free allows 1 project and 5 users, Studio at $59 a month has unlimited users and 10 active projects. Plans are capped by active projects and storage. It has no per-user fees, but also none of ClickUp's custom views.

Switch from ClickUp if a predictable monthly price for a growing headcount matters more than configurability.

Basecamp, #4 of 14 in our project management ranking →

MeisterTask

Germany · Free plan; paid per user per month, published

MeisterTask has a free plan limited to 3 projects, then Pro and Business per user, with timeline views only on Business and workload planner and portfolios on Enterprise. It is EU-hosted in Frankfurt. It is a task board first and does not bundle docs or chat the way ClickUp does.

Switch from ClickUp if a simple kanban tool hosted in Germany is enough.

MeisterTask, #5 of 14 in our project management ranking →

awork

Germany · Per user per month, published; free trial

awork charges per user across Basic, Standard and Professional, with capacity planning from Standard and unlimited automations on Professional. It runs on ISO 27001 certified Microsoft servers in Germany and offers a trial without a credit card. Its plan structure is simpler than ClickUp's, and so is its feature list.

Switch from ClickUp if you want capacity planning and time tracking with German hosting for a team of up to about 100.

awork, #7 of 14 in our project management ranking →

OpenProject

Germany · Free community edition; paid Enterprise plans per user per month from 25 users, published

OpenProject has a free Community edition under an open-source licence that you can self-manage, plus paid Enterprise plans (cloud or on-premises) with 25-user minimums on Basic and Professional. ClickUp is hosted only, so self-hosting is the main difference, at the cost of running it yourself.

Switch from ClickUp if you need to host project management on your own infrastructure.

OpenProject, #1 of 14 in our project management ranking →

Paymo

Romania · Free plan for one user; paid per user per month, published

Paymo targets small service businesses: the free plan covers 1 user and 2 projects, Gantt charts start on Plus and task dependencies on Pro. Time tracking is included from the free plan. It is far narrower than ClickUp, with no whiteboards or chat.

Switch from ClickUp if a small agency wants time tracking and Gantt without paying for a wide platform.

04

When ClickUp is still the right choice

ClickUp remains a reasonable choice when one team wants tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat and time tracking in a single subscription and is prepared to set conventions for how they are used. The Unlimited and Business plans are published per user, and the vendor lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications. If the breadth replaces several subscriptions you would otherwise pay for, the narrower tools will feel like a step back.

05

What moving off ClickUp involves

  1. 01

    Check what leaves with you

ClickUp bundles docs, whiteboards, forms and chat that most alternatives treat as separate products. Before moving, list which of these your team actually opens each week, because each one may need a replacement subscription and a separate export.

  2. 02

Re-create automations and dashboards by hand

Dashboards and automations are tied to ClickUp's own structure of spaces, folders and lists. Expect to rebuild them in the new tool, and compare the automation allowances on the target plan, since several competitors cap them per month.
