NVivo alternatives: 11 qualitative data analysis tools compared

People look for an NVivo alternative when they cannot tell which of Lumivero's two products they would be buying, when the team features they need are not yet on sale, or when they want a price they can read before starting. They move to free tagging tools for small projects, to desktop rivals for the same methods, or to research repositories for product work.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to NVivo in our qualitative data analysis software ranking are Taguette, Quirkos and Delve. Ranking order favours the challenger over the household name, so the best-known vendors begin at place 4 where the category allows it. Choose Taguette if you need a free tool for tagging interviews and keep the data on your machine. Every one of the 11 products below comes from Best Qualitative Data Analysis Software in 2026, with a note on how it departs from NVivo.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Why buyers look past NVivo

  1. 01

    Two products under one name

Lumivero sells NVivo AI Cloud, a web subscription, and NVivo Desktop, an installed product with its own licence. The pages we read describe them separately, and the Desktop page links to a store for 10 licences or fewer. Which one fits your project, and what it costs, is a decision to make before a trial.

  2. 02

    Team features arrive later

On the AI Cloud page, teams of two or more are sent to a waitlist, team access is expected in early 2027 and real-time multi-user editing is planned for the same period. Each team member needs a licence. A group starting a shared project now should check what exists today.

  3. 03

    Prices sit behind the shop

Neither product page shows an amount. In the store we read, Desktop add-ons are priced, EUR 89 a year for Collaboration Cloud and EUR 475 a year for Transcription, while no base licence price is listed there. Team and organisation prices go through sales, and we found no trial stated on those pages.

What each one does differently

Taguette

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Taguette is released under a BSD licence, so you can run it on a laptop or server of your own, or use the hosted copy at app.taguette.org. You import documents, highlight passages, tag them and export the codebook and quotes. The pages we read describe no statistics or coder comparison, so it covers coding only.

Switch from NVivo if you need a free tool for tagging interviews and keep the data on your machine.

Quirkos

United Kingdom · Published

Quirkos comes from an Edinburgh company and sells two ways: a cloud subscription with a three-month minimum, or a one-off offline licence for one or two computers that needs no login. Both prices are on its front page and the 14-day trial carries no feature limits. Offline collaboration means passing project files around.

Switch from NVivo if you want a stated price and the choice of an offline licence.

QDA Miner

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

QDA Miner puts coding of documents, images and recordings beside statistics, visualisation, GIS mapping, inter-rater agreement and a command log. A 14-day trial and a freeware Lite Version are linked. Its order page shows no licence types or prices, so a quote is part of the process.

Switch from NVivo if your study mixes numbers with quotes and needs agreement statistics.

Aurelius

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

Switch from NVivo if the findings go to designers and product managers, not a journal.

Why Aurelius is #8 among 14 qualitative data analysis software products →

Condens

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

Switch from NVivo if your interview material feeds product decisions and needs sharing tools.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want a free tool you can run on your own computer

Taguette: It is released under a BSD licence and covers import, highlighting, tagging and export of the codebook.

  2. 02

You want a price you can read before you start

Quirkos: Cloud subscription and offline licence prices are both on the front page, and the 14-day trial has no feature limits.

  3. 03

Your project runs in short bursts around fieldwork

Dedoose: Users are charged only for months they log in, and collaborators can join at no extra cost.

  4. 04

You need statistics and inter-rater checks next to coding

QDA Miner: It combines coding with statistical tools, GIS mapping and inter-rater agreement, with a 14-day trial.

  5. 05

Your team mixes Windows, Mac and browser

ATLAS.ti: One fee covers the Windows and Mac apps and the web version, and projects move between them.

04

When NVivo is still the right choice

NVivo stays the right choice when your method is established and your funder, supervisor or department already teaches it. Desktop handles documents, transcripts, surveys, audio and video in one workspace on Windows and Mac, and AI Cloud offers regional hosting, an exportable audit trail and a stated policy of not training models on your uploads. If your institution already holds licences, moving costs training time more than money.

05

What moving off NVivo involves

  1. 01

Project files do not travel on their own

Codes, memos and case classifications sit inside NVivo projects. Check which export formats the new tool imports before you commit, and run a pilot on one finished transcript to see whether your code hierarchy arrives intact.

  2. 02

    Plan around the teams waitlist

If you were waiting for AI Cloud team access, decide whether to hold off until early 2027 or start elsewhere now. A coding scheme documented in a codebook export is easier to carry between tools than one living only in the software.

Questions about replacing NVivo

6 answers
Does NVivo have a free plan or trial?

The pages we read, the product pages for AI Cloud and Desktop and the store page, state no trial and no free plan. Lumivero's site search results mention a 14-day trial page, which we did not open, so confirm with the vendor.

How much does NVivo cost?

The product pages show no amounts. The store lists customer types of Researcher, Commercial, Government or Non-Profit, and Student, with annual and one-time terms, but no base licence price in the content we read. Collaboration Cloud is listed at EUR 89 a year.

Where is NVivo AI Cloud data stored?

Lumivero states it runs on Microsoft Azure with data hosted in five regions: Europe, the United States, Canada, Singapore and Australia. It says uploaded data is not used to train AI models.

Can a team work together in NVivo today?

AI Cloud lists team access and full real-time multi-user editing for early 2027, with a waitlist for teams of two or more. Desktop links to Collaboration Cloud or Collaboration Server for teamwork.

Which alternative is free to run?

Taguette is released under a BSD licence and can run on your own computer or server. It covers import, highlighting, tagging and export, and the pages we read describe no statistics.

Which alternatives publish prices?

Quirkos shows both of its prices on its front page, Dedoose lists per-user monthly rates, and Looppanel publishes monthly and yearly plans. Several others, including ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA, show amounts only at checkout or on request.
