MindManager alternatives: 11 mind mapping tools compared

People look at MindManager alternatives when a business-priced annual licence feels heavy for what they map, when the team needs a tool outside the Windows and Mac desktop world, or when they would rather pay once or nothing. The options below range from a free open source desktop mapper to browser tools with live collaboration and to single-purchase apps.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to MindManager in our mind mapping software ranking are Mindomo, Coggle and MindMup. Ranking order favours the challenger over the household name, so the best-known vendors begin at place 4 where the category allows it. Choose Mindomo if you want a small specialist vendor and maps that stay editable offline on Linux too. Below are 11 alternatives, each taken from the Best Mind Mapping Software in 2026 ranking, with its main difference from MindManager.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

MindManager

#12 of 13 in our mind mapping software ranking

  • Pricing: Annual licence per user; one-time purchase option; 30-day trial
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Organisations already standardised on Windows desktop tools and Microsoft Teams
  • Not for: Individuals wanting a free or low-cost mapper

Why buyers look past MindManager

  1. 01

The price is not shown on the page

The pricing page we read lists Essentials per year, Professional per year, Professional as a one-time purchase and Enterprise as special pricing, all marked per user or per licence. No amounts appeared in the text we could retrieve. Buyers have to reach the live page or a sales contact before comparing it with tools that publish a figure.

  2. 02

The full product is a desktop edition

Essentials runs in a browser on Windows, Mac and Chromebook, and its page says touch support has not been implemented yet. The fuller Professional edition is the desktop one, with a 30-day trial. A team of tablet or phone users, or one wanting everything in a browser, will compare it with web-first mappers.

  3. 03

Hosting is two European regions, with limits stated

MindManager Files keeps maps on AWS Frankfurt and AWS Dublin, and the company states it runs no US data centres. Its security page also says it holds no HIPAA, FedRAMP or ISO certification for its cloud applications. Organisations with those requirements are pointed to offline use, which narrows the choice.

What each one does differently

Mindomo

Romania · Published

Mindomo comes from a Romanian company that makes only this product, and it ships offline desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux. Plans are prepaid and do not renew by themselves. The free tier stops at three diagrams, and paid plans come with a 14-day refund window rather than a trial.

Switch from MindManager if you want a small specialist vendor and maps that stay editable offline on Linux too.

MindMup

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Switch from MindManager if you want a narrow online mapper with flat plans and no project features.

Scapple

United Kingdom · See profile

Scapple, from Literature & Latte in Cornwall, lets you drop notes anywhere on a canvas and join them by hand. A licence is bought per platform, for macOS or Windows, with a 30-day trial. Nothing we read mentions team sharing, so it serves one person thinking on paper.

Switch from MindManager if you map alone and prefer loose notes to a structured tree.

Freeplane

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Freeplane is a desktop project under GPL-2.0, published on GitHub, so no licence renews and no vendor sets terms. Its documentation covers formulas, Groovy scripting and an MCP server for AI use. We found no support contract, vendor country or hosted collaboration service.

Switch from MindManager if you can support yourselves and want a mapper that costs nothing and can be scripted.

Ayoa

United Kingdom · See profile

Ayoa, from OpenGenius in Wales, puts mind maps, whiteboards, task boards and Gantt views in a single subscription. Ultimate carries a seven-day trial, then the free plan is personal use with ten mind maps. Its pricing page showed no figures to us. You pay for task tools whether or not you use them.

Switch from MindManager if you want maps and task boards in one place rather than a mapper beside a planner.

Xmind

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Xmind runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, and one subscription covers five computers and five phones or tablets. The free plan allows ten online maps. AI uses credits: 500 a month on Premium, 50 on Free and Pro. Collaboration and cloud storage need Premium.

Switch from MindManager if you want one account across five platforms and a free plan to start on.

Milanote

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Milanote is a board for creative work, with mind mapping as one of several uses. The free plan has no time limit but caps content at 100 notes, images or links and ten uploads. A flat team plan covers up to ten people. Its pricing page does not describe map layout tools.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want to pay nothing and keep control of the software

Freeplane: It is GPL-2.0 open source with scripting and formulas, though we found no support contract.

  2. 02

You need maps that open offline on Linux

Mindomo: Offline desktop apps cover Windows, macOS and Linux, and plans are prepaid without auto-renewal.

  3. 03

You want to buy the app once and use it on a phone too

SimpleMind: It is a single purchase per platform and runs on Mac, Windows, iPad, iPhone and Android.

  4. 04

You want several people editing one map in a browser

Coggle: Real-time collaboration and version history are central, though private diagrams beyond three need a paid plan.

  5. 05

You want German hosting and AI map generation

MindMeister: The site hosts it in Germany and Meister AI builds maps from a prompt or file.

04

When MindManager is still the right choice

MindManager remains a sound choice for organisations already working in Microsoft Teams, SharePoint and Jira, which its site names as integrations. It offers a one-time purchase for Professional as well as the annual licence, a 30-day trial, SSO through Entra ID, Google and Okta, and a SOC report, which few small mappers offer. If an IT department needs volume licences, an admin portal and dedicated support, the Enterprise edition is built around that.

05

What moving off MindManager involves

  1. 01

Map files and add-ins need a test run

MindManager maps are saved in its own format, so check what each target imports before cutting over. Open a few large maps with attachments, task data or Gantt views in the new tool and note what flattens. Integrations such as SharePoint links will not follow.

  2. 02

    Plan who loses desktop features

Co-editing, publishing and Snap capture are tied to MindManager accounts. List who uses them, then decide whether a browser tool with live editing, or an offline desktop app, replaces each habit before anyone's licence lapses.

Questions about replacing MindManager

6 answers
What does MindManager cost?

The pricing page we read shows Essentials and Professional as per-year licences, Professional also as a one-time purchase, and Enterprise as special pricing. It displayed no amounts to us, so check the live page. All prices are stated per user or per licence.

Is there a free trial of MindManager?

Professional comes with a 30-day fully functional trial, and Enterprise has its own trial link. Essentials did not state a trial on the page we read, and we saw no free plan.

Where does MindManager store maps?

MindManager Files uses AWS in Frankfurt and Dublin, and the company says it operates no US data centres. Local and network drives are optional, and the cloud storage can be switched off in the admin portal.

Which MindManager alternative is free?

Freeplane is free open source software under GPL-2.0. Several others have limited free tiers: Xmind allows ten online maps, MindMeister and Coggle and Mindomo three, and MindMup three maps.

Can I pay once instead of subscribing?

SimpleMind and Scapple are bought rather than rented, SimpleMind once per platform and Scapple per platform. MindManager Professional also has a one-time option, so the choice is not limited to alternatives.

Which alternative works on Linux?

Mindomo has desktop apps for Linux, Xmind lists Linux among its platforms, and Freeplane is a desktop project. Check each vendor's download page for your distribution.
