Thinkific alternatives: 11 learning management tools compared

Thinkific alternatives are sought by course sellers who have outgrown a plan ladder, and by companies that bought a course-selling platform and now need to run internal or customer training. The first group moves to another platform built for selling, or to one with flat fees. The second moves to a corporate LMS with reporting, user management and compliance features.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Thinkific in our learning management ranking are Sana Learn, eFront and LearnWorlds. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Sana Learn if you train 300 or more employees or partners and want one all-inclusive price per user. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Learning Management System in 2026, and each says where it differs from Thinkific.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Thinkific

#8 of 13 in our learning management ranking

  • Pricing: 30-day trial only; paid per month by plan, published; extra gateway fee with third-party processors
  • Established in: Canada
  • Built for: A business selling courses to customers
  • Not for: An employer that must assign and evidence staff training
01

Why buyers look past Thinkific

  1. 01

The plan ladder decides what you can do

Thinkific publishes four plans: Basic at 39 euros a month billed annually (53 monthly), Start at 79 (107), Grow at 159 (213) and a custom Plus. Its comparison table puts paid memberships, completion certificates, assignments and Zoom lessons above Basic, and removal of Thinkific branding, communities beyond one and phone support higher still. A seller who needs two of those quickly finds that the plan, not the course, sets the price.

  2. 02

No free plan, and a payment fee on top

Thinkific has no free plan; it offers a 30-day free trial instead. Its own payment processor, Thinkific Payments, is quoted at 2.9%, and the company states that an additional third-party payment gateway fee applies when Stripe or PayPal is used, varying by plan. Sellers who already have a processor contract compare that against platforms that charge a flat subscription or a per-enrolment fee.

  3. 03

Built for selling, not for assigning training

Thinkific describes itself as a platform to create and sell courses, with landing pages, email automation, communities and a branded mobile app (an add-on at 199 dollars a month, included on select Plus plans). Companies that need to assign mandatory courses, track completion by department or connect an HR system are using a selling tool for an administration job, and tend to look at corporate LMS products. Thinkific is a publicly traded company (TSX: THNC).

What each one does differently

Sana Learn

Sweden · Quoted per user per month, from 300 users

Sana Learn is a corporate learning platform that combines LMS, learning experience, authoring and a virtual classroom, with every capability in a single per-user price instead of Thinkific's plan tiers. Plans start at 300 users and pricing is quoted after an intro call. It does not sell courses to the public the way Thinkific's storefront does.

Switch from Thinkific if you train 300 or more employees or partners and want one all-inclusive price per user.

Sana Learn, #1 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

eFront

Greece · Published per month, billed annually, from 300 registered or 100 active users; on-premises quoted

eFront is an enterprise LMS from Epignosis, the company behind TalentLMS, priced by registered users (from 300, starting at 720 dollars a month billed annually) or active users (from 100, starting at 1,600 dollars). It can be hosted on your own servers and includes multi-tenancy and SCORM 1.2. It has no course storefront for individual buyers.

Switch from Thinkific if you run training for a large organisation and want the option to host the LMS yourself.

eFront, #2 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

LearnWorlds

Cyprus · Per month by plan, published; $5 fee per paid enrolment on Starter

LearnWorlds is the closest like-for-like replacement: a platform for selling courses on your own domain, with AI course building, built-in community and unlimited video hosting on every plan. Its Starter plan charges 5 dollars per paid enrolment, while Pro Trainer and above charge no enrolment fees. It publishes no free plan, only a free trial.

Switch from Thinkific if you still sell courses to the public and want AI authoring and white-label options in the plan.

LearnWorlds, #6 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

TalentLMS

Greece · Free plan for 5 users and 10 courses; paid plans by monthly active-user band, published

TalentLMS is built for employee, partner and customer training rather than for selling to consumers. It has a free plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses, and paid plans priced by the number of monthly unique users (Core from 119 dollars a month for 1 to 40 users). Branch portals, SSO and an API are in the paid plans, and storefront features are thinner than Thinkific's.

Switch from Thinkific if your audience is staff or customers you train, and you want a free plan to test with.

TalentLMS, #3 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

Moodle

Australia · Free self-hosted; MoodleCloud plans published

Moodle is open source under GPL v3 (its code is on GitHub), so you can host it yourself and pay no licence fee, or use hosted MoodleCloud with a trial. MoodleCloud does not allow plugin installation, and selling goes through a PayPal integration. It asks for far more setup and upkeep than Thinkific, and has no marketing tools of the same kind.

Switch from Thinkific if you have technical staff, want full control of the code and data, and sell little or nothing.

Moodle, #4 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

360Learning

France · Team plan per user per month, published, up to 100 users; Business and Enterprise quoted

360Learning is organised around collaborative learning, where subject experts inside the company author courses with AI assistance. Its Team plan is 8 dollars per user per month for up to 100 users, with Business and Enterprise plans quoted and no minimum number of users. It is a workplace tool and has no public storefront comparable to Thinkific's.

Switch from Thinkific if your own staff know the subject and should write the courses, in a team of up to 100.

360Learning, #5 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

LearnUpon

Ireland · Quoted per organisation, with minimum user tiers

LearnUpon sells to organisations in three packages: employees (from 100 users), customer education (from 300) and associations (from 150), with an implementation consultant included. Its own FAQ says it does not fit teams under 100 users, on-premise needs, HIPAA data, or K-12 and higher education. eCommerce and white labelling sit on higher plans.

Switch from Thinkific if you are a company with at least 100 users and want onboarding help included in the contract.

LearnUpon, #7 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

Docebo

Canada · Quoted per organisation; extended enterprise and extra branded domains are add-ons

Docebo prices by tier (Elevate or Enterprise) and by active users, counted monthly, yearly or as registered users, with optional add-ons. Its own FAQ says it suits organisations training at least 250 learners across employees, customers and partners. It is far more than a solo course seller needs, and its prices are not published.

Switch from Thinkific if you train 250 or more learners across several audiences and want to pay by activity.

Docebo, #9 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

Absorb LMS

Canada · Quoted per organisation

Absorb LMS publishes no prices on its site; you request a demo and the quote depends on learner count. It includes an eCommerce module that it says carries no commission, with 70 payment gateways, multiple currencies and team licences. That gives it a selling function while its focus remains corporate onboarding, upskilling and compliance training.

Switch from Thinkific if you need compliance and onboarding training with the ability to sell seats, and accept a quoted price.

Absorb LMS, #10 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

Canvas

United States · Quoted per organisation; AGPL open source code on GitHub for self-hosting

Canvas comes from Instructure and is built for schools, universities and, increasingly, business. Its source code is published on GitHub under AGPL v3 for self-hosting, and the hosted product is sold by quote. Teaching tools such as SpeedGrader and parent and student apps are central, whereas selling and marketing are not.

Switch from Thinkific if you run an academic or certification programme with graders and cohorts rather than a course shop.

Canvas, #12 of 13 in our learning management ranking →

Cornerstone OnDemand

United States · Quoted per organisation; modules licensed separately

Cornerstone OnDemand presents itself as a workforce readiness platform that links learning to skills, job architecture and talent agents, and you reach it through a demo or an expert call, not a price page. It addresses large employers managing skills across a whole workforce. It has no role for an independent course seller.

Switch from Thinkific if learning is one part of a company-wide skills and talent programme for a very large workforce.

When Thinkific is still the right choice

Thinkific remains the sensible choice for an independent expert or small company whose main job is selling online courses, memberships and downloads from its own branded school. The plan table lists unlimited published courses on every plan, a community, email automation, landing pages and a site builder, and the 30-day trial lets you test all of it before paying. If a payment processor, one plan tier and a storefront cover your needs, a corporate LMS adds administration you will not use.

05

What moving off Thinkific involves

  1. 01

Check the payment and checkout setup first

Thinkific states that a third-party gateway fee applies when you use Stripe or PayPal instead of Thinkific Payments. Before moving, list how students pay today, whether payments are one-off, subscriptions or plans, and what the new platform charges for the same flows. LearnWorlds, for example, charges 5 dollars per paid enrolment on Starter and nothing on Pro Trainer.

  2. 02

Content, certificates and communities move by hand

Course videos, quizzes, community posts and issued certificates sit inside Thinkific, so budget time to export your source files and rebuild lessons in the new tool. If you deliver SCORM packages, confirm the new platform accepts them on your plan. Keep the old school running until enrolled students have finished or been moved.

  3. 03

Match the audience, not the feature list

A move from a selling platform to a corporate LMS changes who the buyer is. Corporate products price by user count, often with minimums (300 for Sana Learn, 100 for LearnUpon, 250 typical for Docebo), and several publish no prices. Ask for a written quote for your user number before you migrate any content.

Questions about replacing Thinkific

6 answers
What is the closest alternative to Thinkific?

LearnWorlds is the nearest like-for-like option: it also sells courses on your own domain, with AI course building, community and unlimited video hosting. TalentLMS and Moodle are better when the audience is staff or students you train rather than customers who buy.

Is there a free alternative to Thinkific?

Thinkific has no free plan, only a 30-day trial. TalentLMS has a free plan for up to 5 users and 10 courses, and Moodle is open source under GPL v3, so self-hosting needs no licence fee.

Both are aimed at training rather than selling, and Moodle needs technical staff.

Which Thinkific alternative suits company training?

TalentLMS, 360Learning, LearnUpon, Docebo and Absorb LMS are built for staff, partner and customer training. Pick by size: TalentLMS and 360Learning start small, while LearnUpon is aimed at 100 users or more and Docebo at around 250 learners or more.

Can I self-host instead of paying a monthly plan?

Yes, with three of these. Moodle (GPL v3) and Canvas (AGPL v3) publish their code on GitHub, and eFront offers on-premises hosting on a quoted price. Self-hosting removes the platform fee but moves security, updates and backups to you.

Does Thinkific charge transaction fees?

Thinkific states that Thinkific Payments costs 2.9%, and that an additional third-party payment gateway fee applies when you use Stripe or PayPal, varying by plan. Check the current fee for your plan on its pricing page before comparing.

Are corporate LMS products cheaper than Thinkific?

Not usually for a small seller. Sana Learn starts at 300 users, eFront at 720 dollars a month billed annually, and Docebo, Absorb LMS, Canvas and Cornerstone give no public price.

They become cheaper per learner only when the number of learners is in the hundreds.
