ActiveCampaign is usually replaced by teams that bought the automation builder and never built the automations, or whose contact tier has climbed while most sends remain newsletters. Others outgrow its reporting. They move to a cheaper sender, to a suite tied to their CRM, or to a specialist for stores or software companies.

Why buyers look past ActiveCampaign
01
A builder nobody had time to build in
The journey builder is the reason to choose ActiveCampaign, and it rewards setup time. Teams that never invest that time end up paying for a machine they do not start. The entry Starter plan also caps each automation at five actions and one user, so real journeys mean a higher tier. Without an owner for automation, a simpler tool does the same job.
02
Contact tiers on a list that mostly gets newsletters
Plans are priced by contact band, from 500 to 1,000 contacts upward, and billed annually on the listed rates. For a company whose real activity is a monthly newsletter, that is an expensive way to send one. The cost follows the size of the database, not the amount of automation running against it, and sends are capped at a multiple of the contact limit.
03
Reporting that lags the automation
Reporting is weaker than the automation itself, and accounts with many overlapping automations become hard to audit. Custom reporting is sold as an add-on, as are pipelines and lead scoring in the enhanced CRM. Teams that need to trace a closed deal back to its first touch, or explain to finance what the journeys earn, feel that gap most.

What each one does differently

HubSpot Marketing Hub
United States · Free tier; paid tiers per month with contact tiers, published; real automation starts at Professional
Runs on the same database as HubSpot's CRM, so a closed deal traces back to the first page view, an answer to ActiveCampaign's weaker reporting. Real workflows begin at the Professional tier, a steep jump, and the advantage disappears on another CRM.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if your CRM is already HubSpot and attribution matters more than builder flexibility.
France · Free tier; paid plans by monthly send volume, published
Charges by monthly send volume instead of contact tier, with email, SMS and WhatsApp in one builder and a light deals pipeline. It has a free tier. Lead scoring and account-level reporting are shallower than the specialists offer.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if you hold a large, quiet list and the contact tier is the main complaint.
Bulgaria · Published plans priced by contact count, with higher tiers for team features and advanced integrations
Triggers journeys from product usage and Stripe billing events such as a failed payment or an ending trial, a narrower focus than ActiveCampaign's generalist journeys. It is a small vendor with fewer integrations, no SMS or push, and a trial in place of a free plan.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if you are a small software company automating around trials and billing.
Poland · Quoted via an interactive calculator, priced by active contacts from 3,000
Puts behavioural lead scoring and RFM segmentation at the centre instead of the journey canvas, acting through email, SMS, web push and conversational AI. Pricing comes from a calculator by active contacts, rising gradually per thousand with no fixed price list.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if scoring and segmentation are the job and workflows are secondary.
United States · Free tier to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month; paid by active profiles, published
Holds order, product and browse data natively in segmentation and predicts lifetime value without a data team, which suits a store better than ActiveCampaign's CRM-neutral lead journeys. For B2B lead scoring it is the wrong tool and an expensive one.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if the list belongs to an online store and revenue per email is the measure.
Poland · Free to 500 contacts; paid per contact per month, published
Bundles automation with landing pages, funnels and webinars in one subscription, and is free to 500 contacts. Its automation builder shows its age beside the deeper journey tools such as ActiveCampaign, and deliverability is respectable, not excellent.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if you run lead-generation webinars and want to drop a separate webinar subscription.
Portugal · Free plan to 5,001 contacts and 15,000 emails/month; Base from EUR 8.92/month; Pro from EUR 33.79/month
Offers a free plan to 5,001 contacts and 15,000 emails a month, against ActiveCampaign's contact-tier plans. Full workflow automation, WhatsApp and ecommerce features unlock only on Pro, so serious automation still means budgeting for a paid tier.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if budget is tight and your automation needs are moderate.
United Kingdom · Free tier; paid per contact, published
Ships ecommerce flows prebuilt, so a small store skips the mapping work ActiveCampaign rewards. Email and SMS share one builder, and a free plan covers 250 contacts. It is not built for B2B lead scoring or CRM handoff, and segmentation is shallower on complex catalogues.
Switch from ActiveCampaign if you run a small shop and want flows live the same day.
Stay with ActiveCampaign if someone owns the automation and keeps building it. It is the most capable engine at mid-market pricing: journeys branch on site visits, email behaviour and custom events, with unlimited actions from the Plus plan and lead scoring through the CRM add-on. It also connects to several CRMs, including Salesforce and Microsoft Dynamics, so it does not force a CRM choice the way a suite does.
05
What moving off ActiveCampaign involves
01
Automations have to be redrawn, not exported
Contacts move as a file; journeys do not. Each automation has to be rebuilt by hand in the new builder, and an account with many overlapping automations is hard to audit. Start by listing which ones still fire and which contacts are inside them now.
02
Scores, tags and deal data
Scores are calculated inside ActiveCampaign, and its CRM add-on may hold pipelines and deals your sales team relies on. Decide whether each score is recreated, exported as a static field or dropped, and where deals live afterwards, before anything is switched off.
03
The CRM connection changes shape
ActiveCampaign is CRM-neutral; several replacements are not. HubSpot Marketing Hub loses most of its advantage on a non-HubSpot CRM, and Omnisend is not built for CRM handoff. Check how qualified contacts will reach sales in the new setup, since that handoff is the purpose of the category.

Questions about replacing ActiveCampaign
5 answers
What is the best ActiveCampaign alternative for a HubSpot CRM user?
HubSpot Marketing Hub, because automation reads the same database as sales and reporting joins up without a sync.
Real workflow automation starts at the Professional tier, a steep step from Starter, and higher tiers carry onboarding fees, so price that tier and not the entry one.
Is Brevo cheaper than ActiveCampaign?
For a large list mailed occasionally, usually, because Brevo charges by monthly send volume while ActiveCampaign prices by contact tier. Brevo also has a free tier. The saving comes with shallower lead scoring, and reporting that is the weakest part of the product.
Which ActiveCampaign alternative suits a SaaS company?
Encharge is built for that case: it reacts to product usage and Stripe billing events such as failed payments and ending trials.
It is a small vendor with a shorter integration list and no SMS or push channel, and it offers a trial, not a permanent free plan.
Is ActiveCampaign too much for sending newsletters?
Usually, yes. Its plans are priced by contact band and built around automation, and the Starter plan limits each automation to five actions.
e-goi has a free plan to 5,001 contacts, and Brevo and GetResponse also start free, which covers newsletter sending without paying for an unused journey builder.
Does ActiveCampaign have a free plan?
Its pricing page lists four paid email plans, Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise, priced by the number of contacts, with a 14-day trial that needs no credit card and a 30-day refund offer.
Teams that want to stay free permanently should look at Brevo, e-goi, GetResponse or Omnisend.
