That is a real advantage and it is also the whole argument, because outside the AVEVA estate the product competes poorly. The Flex subscription pools credits across products, which sounds flexible and in practice means you cannot price a second site yourself.

How to choose manufacturing execution software

A manufacturing execution system releases work orders to the shop floor, confirms operations as they finish, consumes material against them, and records the genealogy that traceability audits ask for. The differences that matter are rarely in the feature list, so this is the order we would work through them.

    Decide whether you need a published price

    3 of the 12 tools here publish what they cost; the other 9 quote per organisation, which means a sales conversation before you can compare anything. If you are buying without a procurement function, start with the ones that publish: Tulip, Evocon, Sepasoft.

  2. 02

    Work out what the first ninety days cost in time

    Licence cost is the number in the contract; setup effort is the number that surprises people. Ask every shortlisted vendor who does the configuration, how long it took the last customer of your size, and what happens if that person leaves halfway.

  3. 03

    Check the exit before the entry

    Ask for an export of your own data in a format you can open, and ask whether it is included or billed as a project. A vendor that hesitates here is telling you what renewal negotiations will feel like in three years.

    Match the tool to the size you are, not the size you plan to be

    Most regret in this category comes from buying for a headcount that never arrived. The entry-level products here are not worse; they are aimed at a different company.

    Decide how much the jurisdiction matters

What an MES is, and the two things it is not

An MES releases the work order to the floor, confirms each operation as it is finished, consumes the material against it and keeps the record of which lot went into which unit. Two things it is not. It is not a scheduler: deciding the sequence and checking whether the capacity exists belongs to a planning system, and most MES products either assume that decision or offer a thin version of it.

It is not maintenance: the vibration on spindle three and the work order to fix it live in a CMMS. Products blur these lines to widen the deal. Critical Manufacturing and Werum PAS-X are execution and traceability first, and are honest about it. Plex is the exception that genuinely includes the ERP, which is a different purchase.

  • Write down which system owns the schedule before the first demo.
  • Ask where a maintenance work order lives, and refuse the answer 'both'.
  • List the three questions an audit would ask, and make the vendor answer them on your data.

The integration is the project

Every MES quote has a licence line and a hidden line, and the hidden line is interfaces. Two of them decide the budget. Upwards, to the ERP: work orders in, confirmations and material consumption out, in a format that survives a rescheduled order. Downwards, to the machines: OPC UA if you are lucky, serial protocols and a converter box if you are not.

Forcam is on this list because getting data out of thirty-year-old controllers is the thing it is actually good at, and Sepasoft is cheap only if the Ignition layer that talks to the machines already exists. Ask any vendor how many of the machines on your list they have connected before, by model number. A vendor that answers with a protocol name has not answered.

  • Take the machine list, with makes and model years, to every vendor meeting.
  • Ask who writes the ERP interface and who fixes it when the ERP is upgraded.
  • Price the converter hardware for the machines with no network port.

Start with the loss you can already name

MES projects that stall are the ones bought to get visibility. The ones that land start from a number somebody already argues about: scrap on line two, changeover time, or the four hours a month spent reconstructing a batch record by hand. Evocon is on this list for that reason.

It is not an MES and does not claim to be, but a plant that cannot yet explain its downtime will not get value from work-order execution either, and counting stops is a month of work rather than a year. If the downtime reasons are already understood and the argument is about traceability or order confirmation, skip that step and buy execution.

  • Name the loss in euros per month before you name a vendor.
  • Pick one line for the pilot, and pick the one with the loudest problem.
  • Set the date at which the pilot either extends or is switched off.

Who can run it after the integrator leaves

The question that decides this ranking is whether your own people can change the thing next year. Adding a work step, a new quality check or a different label should be configuration, not a change request. Tulip is first here because the person who builds the app is the person who runs the line, and that is rare in this market.

MPDV HYDRA and Siemens Opcenter Execution are configurable too, but by someone trained on them for months. SAP Digital Manufacturing and AVEVA MES tend to arrive with a partner attached and stay that way. None of that is disqualifying. It is a running cost, and it belongs in the comparison next to the licence.

  • Ask to see a configuration change made live in the demo, not described.
  • Get the partner's day rate in writing before signing the licence.
  • Count how many people in your plant would need the training, and budget it.

What goes wrong most often when buying manufacturing execution software

  • Buying an MES to fix a scheduling problem. Sequencing and capacity belong to a planning system; the MES only executes what it is handed.
  • Letting the MES own maintenance work orders because the vendor offered a module. The CMMS the technicians already use will keep winning.
  • Signing before the machine list has been priced. The licence is rarely the largest number in an MES project.
  • Rolling out to every line at once. The plant that has not yet used the system cannot tell you what is wrong with the configuration.
