Zendesk vs Intercom
Neither is a dedicated lead-qualification bot; both are support platforms with chat attached. Zendesk sells messaging only inside its Suite, backed by a large app ecosystem and mature reporting. Intercom is built around the Fin AI agent and in-product messaging. Established support organisations lean towards Zendesk, software companies supporting users inside their application towards Intercom.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.
you run a support operation that needs mature reporting, an app for every adjacent system and agents who already know the tool, and you accept buying the whole Suite.
you are a product company supporting users inside your application and want an AI agent that resolves conversations, accepting a bill built from seats, contacts and resolutions.

Where they differ
Zendesk 2 · Intercom 1 · open 1- 01
Published seat prices
Intercom's tiers run at $29, $85 and $132 per seat per month. Zendesk's chat comes only with Suite plans: $55 per agent on Suite Team and $115 on Suite Professional with annual billing, with Enterprise quoted. At the entry and middle tiers Intercom is the lower figure, before its separately billed AI agent is added.

Forecasting the total bill
Intercom mixes seats, reachable contacts and AI resolutions, and our notes describe forecasting it as hard until you have run it for a quarter. Zendesk is simpler to predict, since it is mostly agents times plan, but per-channel add-ons push the per-seat cost up and small needs often mean buying another app.

The AI agent
Intercom is built around Fin, which resolves a real share of conversations instead of deflecting them into a queue, and charges $0.99 per resolution on every tier. Zendesk is tagged for omnichannel AI routing and quotes its Enterprise plan with Copilot, but our data does not describe how its AI is priced or how much it resolves.
Depends on the buyer

Ecosystem and reporting
Zendesk's case rests on its ecosystem: an app for every adjacent system, a large pool of agents who already know the product, and reporting mature enough to manage a support operation on. Intercom's documented strength is coherence inside a software product, with its messenger and product tours, not the surrounding marketplace or hiring pool.

When neither fits
A marketing team that wants a bot to qualify website visitors and hand them to sales pays for ticketing it will not use with either. Landbot was designed for lead qualification and conversion, and LiveChat for proactive sales campaigns whose conversion it tracks.
Zendesk or Intercom: questions
3 answersIs Intercom cheaper than Zendesk for chat?
On seat price at the lower tiers, yes: Intercom starts at $29 per seat against $55 per agent for Zendesk Suite Team. The totals are harder to compare, because Intercom bills Fin at $0.99 per resolution and also counts contacts, while Zendesk adds per-channel add-ons.
Can I buy chat on its own from Zendesk or Intercom?
Not from Zendesk: its messaging and live chat are bundled inside Suite plans and are not sold as a standalone chat product.
Intercom sells its messaging platform in three per-seat tiers with a 14-day free trial, and bills the Fin AI agent separately on all of them.
Which suits a software company better, Zendesk or Intercom?
Intercom, if support happens inside the product: its messenger, product tours and AI agent are built for that and nothing else is as coherent there. Zendesk suits a support organisation that prizes the app ecosystem, the hiring pool and mature reporting over in-product messaging.
