Xero vs Zoho Books
Xero is the standalone ledger with unlimited users on every plan and more than 1,000 connected apps, from $25 a month in the US. Zoho Books is free under $50K revenue, then $20 a month for three users, adding projects on Professional and stock tracking on Elite. Buyers wanting an independent hub choose Xero; cost-conscious buyers choose Zoho Books.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.
bank reconciliation is where your time goes, several people need access, and you want to pick your own connected apps without committing to one vendor's suite.
you want projects, timesheets and multi-currency for a modest monthly fee, your turnover may qualify for the free plan, or the rest of your stack is already Zoho.

Price of a full ledger
Zoho Books is free while annual revenue stays under $50K, for one user plus an accountant and up to 1,000 invoices a year. Paid plans run from $20 a month per organisation on Standard to $275 on Ultimate, less when billed annually. Xero's US plans are $25, $55 and $90 a month, and the $25 plan is limited to 20 invoices and five bills.
Edge: Zoho Books
- 02
Who gets a login
Xero includes unlimited users on all plans at no extra cost. Zoho Books includes three users on Standard, five on Professional, ten on Premium and Elite and 15 on Ultimate, with further users at $3 each a month. The surcharge is small, so a large team remains affordable on Zoho Books, but only Xero removes the head count from the decision.
Edge: Xero
- 03
Inventory and projects
Zoho Books adds projects, billable timesheets and multiple currencies on Professional at $50 a month, and reserves stock tracking, warehouses, serial and batch numbers for Elite at $150. Xero keeps projects and multiple currencies for Established at $90, lists basic inventory on every plan and sells advanced inventory as an add-on. Projects arrive cheaper on Zoho Books; serious stock costs extra on both.
Edge: Zoho Books
- 04
Bank feeds and reconciliation
Both reconcile on every plan. Xero lists bank reconciliation across all three tiers and says most banks connect through a secure direct feed. Zoho Books includes bank reconciliation even on its free plan. Reconciliation remains the part of Xero that users praise most, but on the published feature lists neither holds anything back, so coverage of your own bank decides this round.
Depends on the buyer
- 05
Marketplace or suite
Xero extends through a store of more than 1,000 third-party apps, so it sits comfortably at the centre of a mixed stack. Zoho Books is designed to draw you into Zoho's other applications and feels less complete on its own. A company already on Zoho gains from that; one standardised on another suite does not. It depends on your stack.
Depends on the buyer
When neither fits
Neither fits a group consolidating several entities and currencies, which is NetSuite's territory. And where local compliance decides the choice, a regional product such as Exact Online in the Netherlands and Belgium will file more reliably than either global package.
