Plex Media Server vs Emby
Plex Media Server costs nothing to install and plays your files on the home network for free, but watching away from home needs a paid Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass. Emby sells a Premiere licence for single-household use, monthly at $4.99, for one year at $54, or once for $119. Plex's own pages could not show Plex Pass amounts, so a full price comparison is not possible from what we read. The practical split is a free local tier with paid remote access against one licence that covers a household up to 30 devices.
Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.
you mostly watch at home, want to start without paying, and will add a $19.99 to $29.99 yearly Remote Watch Pass only if you need to stream away. You also accept that accounts involve Plex GmbH and affiliates, with data processed mainly in the United States.
you want one stated price, with a $119 lifetime option, covering DVR, offline downloads and your whole household. You also have no more than 30 devices and are fine with Emby having no free version described on its Premiere page.

Where they differ
Plex Media Server 3 · Emby 2 · open 1- 01
Streaming from outside the house
On Plex, the Free plan streams your own media on the home network, and remote streaming is not included. A Remote Watch Pass adds streaming only, at USD 1.99 a month or USD 19.99 a year, rising to USD 2.99 and USD 29.99 for billing cycles from 1 June 2026, with a 14-day trial. Emby's Premiere page does not split remote access out as a separate product. For a household that only needs the occasional trip, Plex's small pass is a cheap entry.

The $119 once-only option
Emby Premiere is priced at $4.99 per month with recurring billing, $54 for 1 Year, or $119 for Lifetime, all in USD and all for single household use. Plex Pass is also billed monthly, yearly or as a one-time lifetime payment, yet its amounts did not load on the plans page we read, so no lifetime figure can be set against Emby's. A buyer who wants a number to budget around gets one from Emby today.

Free tier and trial
Plex says it is totally free to download the software and set up your server, and a Free plan streams locally with no subscription. The Remote Watch Pass has a 14-day free trial, though the Plex Pass pages showed none in the text we read. Emby's Premiere page describes no free version, only that some apps can unlock basic playback individually, and it mentions no trial. If you want to try before paying anything, Plex offers more room.

DVR, downloads and transcoding
Plex Pass lists hardware transcoding, downloads, Skip Intro and Credits, Ultimate TV and DVR, Plexamp exclusives, and server management with parental controls. Emby Premiere names two extras on its page: offline downloads to Android, iOS and Windows devices, and Emby DVR for scheduled and series recordings. Plex's published list is longer and includes transcoding, which the Emby page we read does not mention. On sheer feature count in the sources, Plex Pass is ahead, with no price visible to weigh it against.

Household and device ceilings
Emby's licence covers a single household and a 30-device limit, and more devices need the separate Extended Premiere Options sold through a link on that page. A family server shared across two homes therefore needs another arrangement. Plex states no household or device cap in the pages we read, but it does say users on older mobile apps hit a one-minute playback limit unless a Plex Pass or one-time in-app unlock is bought. Neither ceiling is free of conditions.

Operator, law and where data goes
Emby, LLC is a North Carolina limited liability company that owns and operates the site, and its terms are governed by North Carolina law with arbitration in Mecklenburg County. Plex's privacy notice names Plex GmbH and affiliates including Plex, Inc., with personal data processed mainly in the United States, while its about page calls it a fully remote company and names no owner or location. Emby is the easier one to place legally from its own documents.

When neither fits
If you want remote streaming with no subscription and no licence at all, neither fits, since both charge for it in some form. Jellyfin and Navidrome are two other media servers in our category that are worth checking.
Plex Media Server or Emby: questions
3 answersCan I use Plex away from home without paying?
The Free plan covers streaming on your home network, and remote streaming is outside it. The plans page says remote streaming requires a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass. Users of the Remote Watch Pass get a 14-day free trial before the charge starts.
Does an Emby Premiere licence cover relatives in another house?
The Premiere page states each licence is for single household use. A shared family server across homes would need another arrangement. Devices past 30 are sold through the Extended Premiere Options, not the base licence.
Why can't Plex Pass be priced here?
The plans page showed 'Could not load pricing' where the Plex Pass amounts should sit. We only know it is billed monthly, yearly or once for life. The Remote Watch Pass figures come from the page's FAQ rather than the widget.
