DigitalOcean is stronger on documentation and on managed databases and Kubernetes. Vultr lists about twice as many locations and a slightly lower price for a 1 GB server. Developers wanting guidance choose DigitalOcean; teams needing reach choose Vultr.

Regions and hardware range
Vultr's public region list shows 33 locations, including São Paulo, Santiago, Johannesburg, Tel Aviv and Seoul. DigitalOcean documents 16 data centres across 13 regions in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Both sell GPU servers; Vultr also lists general bare metal from $120 a month, where DigitalOcean's bare metal offer is GPU machines reserved through sales. For reach, Vultr has the advantage.

Price of a small server
For a server with 1 vCPU, 1 GB of memory and 25 GB of disk, Vultr lists $5 a month and DigitalOcean $6. With 2 GB, Vultr lists $10 for 55 GB of disk and DigitalOcean $12 for 50 GB. Both charge $0.01 per GB of outbound transfer beyond the allowance. Like for like, Vultr's regular plans are a little cheaper.

Documentation
DigitalOcean's guides are the reason many developers know how to deploy a server at all. Vultr's documentation is described as thinner than DigitalOcean's. Since both providers leave the operating system, updates and firewall to you, the quality of written guidance is a practical difference for any team without a seasoned administrator.

Managed databases and Kubernetes
Both offer them. DigitalOcean lists managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Valkey and OpenSearch from $15.15 a month, and its Kubernetes control plane is free, with high availability for $40 a month. Vultr's Kubernetes Engine also manages the control plane, but its managed services are younger. A team leaning on managed services is on firmer ground with DigitalOcean.

How usage is billed
DigitalOcean bills Droplets per second, with a one-minute minimum, up to the flat monthly price of the plan. Vultr bills per hour, with one hour as the minimum, up to 672 hours a month, and keeps charging for servers that are stopped but not destroyed. Neither uses an introductory price. For workloads lasting minutes, DigitalOcean's meter is finer.

When neither fits
Neither fits if raw cost in Europe is the priority, or if nobody will maintain the server. Hetzner gives the lowest cost per resource from German and Finnish data centres. Cloudways manages hosting on top of someone else's cloud for teams without a sysadmin.

Is Vultr cheaper than DigitalOcean?
Slightly, on the regular plans. A 1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GB server is listed at $5 a month on Vultr and $6 on DigitalOcean; the 2 GB size is $10 against $12.
Both charge $0.01 per GB of extra outbound transfer, and DigitalOcean pools the allowance across a team's Droplets.
What is the cheapest server on each?
DigitalOcean's smallest Basic Droplet is $4 a month for 512 MiB of memory and 10 GB of disk.
Vultr's plan list shows 512 MB plans at $2.50 and $3.50 a month, but only in one or two locations; the $5 plan with 1 GB is the smallest one offered almost everywhere.
