DigitalOcean alternatives: 12 web hosting tools compared
People who search for a DigitalOcean alternative usually run one or two Droplets and want a lower price per vCPU, more included traffic, a managed WordPress stack, or a supplier outside the United States. Some are bothered by usage billing that is hard to forecast. They move to a cheaper VPS provider, to a European operator, or to a hosting platform that manages the server for them.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to DigitalOcean in our web hosting ranking are Vultr, Hetzner and Cloudways. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Vultr if you want the same self-service cloud model from another US provider. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Web Hosting in 2026, and each says where it differs from DigitalOcean.

01
Why buyers look past DigitalOcean
01
Bundled plans are capped, newer Droplets are not
DigitalOcean's Basic Droplets start at USD 4 a month for 512 MiB of memory, one vCPU, 10 GiB of disk and 500 GiB of transfer. Bundled plans stop accruing at a monthly cap of 672 hours, but the newer v5 Droplets are priced per resource and have no monthly cap, so a continuously running v5 Droplet is a sum of vCPU, memory and disk rates. Budgeting needs a calculator, not a price tag.
02
Transfer is pooled and billed beyond the allowance
Each Droplet plan includes an amount of outbound transfer, pooled across all Droplets in the team, and extra outbound traffic costs USD 0.01 per GiB. Backups add 20% (weekly) or 30% (daily) of the Droplet price, or usage-based backups from USD 0.01 per GiB a month. A traffic-heavy site or a backup-heavy fleet therefore pays on top of the sticker price.
03
A self-service cloud, not a managed host
DigitalOcean sells virtual machines, managed Kubernetes with a managed control plane and managed databases, so the buyer runs the operating system and the web stack. A site owner who wanted a control panel, WordPress patching or support that touches the server finds it on the VPS side only through the Marketplace or a third party. The contracting party is DigitalOcean, LLC, under Delaware law.

What each one does differently
1
Vultr
United States · Per hour by resource, published; capped at a monthly rate
The closest like-for-like cloud: hourly billing for Cloud Compute, capped at 672 hours a month, and a bandwidth overage rate of USD 0.01 per GB. A stopped server still accrues charges until it is destroyed. Its pricing page blocked our fetch, so compare plan sizes on the vendor site yourself.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want the same self-service cloud model from another US provider.
Germany · Per hour up to a monthly maximum, published; no introductory pricing, setup fee on some products
German operator with cloud plans billed per hour up to a monthly price cap, so the bill never exceeds the cap. Shared plans such as the CX23 (2 vCPU, 4 GB, 40 GB NVMe) start at EUR 5.99 a month excluding VAT. EU locations include at least 20 TB of traffic. Locations: Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want the lowest published price per server and plenty of included EU traffic.
Malta · By server size, published; billed hourly and invoiced monthly, 3-day trial
A managed layer that runs on DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Compute Engine, so it is not independent of the incumbent: its own FAQ says it is part of DigitalOcean LLC. Flexible plans start at USD 11 a month with a 3-day trial, billed hourly in arrears.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want the DigitalOcean infrastructure with the server management done for you.
A UK host with cloud VPS from GBP 10 a month, UK-based support by chat, tickets and phone, and a 60-day money-back guarantee. Data centres are in London, Amsterdam and Edison, New Jersey. Management starts from GBP 80 a month and a cPanel licence from GBP 18, both optional extras.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want a human-supported VPS with an optional managed service, hosted in the UK or Netherlands.
Switzerland · Per month by plan, published; 30-day free trial on web hosting
Swiss provider with cloud VPS from CHF 38.41 a month, a 30-day refund guarantee, unlimited traffic and servers hosted in Switzerland. Resources reach 32 vCPU and 128 GB of RAM. The entry price is well above DigitalOcean's USD 4 Droplet, because the smallest plan is a larger machine.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want Swiss hosting with unlimited traffic and a fixed monthly flat rate.
Germany · Per month or per hour by resource, published
German vServer provider with contract terms of 1, 12 or 24 months, discounted 13% and 26% for the longer terms. VPS 500 G12.5 (2 vCore, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB SSD) is EUR 8.26 a month on 12 months excluding VAT. Traffic is included. Locations include Vienna and Nuremberg. Term-based contracts replace usage billing.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you run steady servers for a year or more and prefer a fixed contract to hourly billing.
France · Per month by resource or plan, published; web hosting discounted in the first year, renewal higher
Its VPS-1 (2 vCores, 4 GB, 40 GB NVMe) starts from USD 4.54 a month with unlimited traffic, and VPS-4 reaches 8 vCores and 24 GB at USD 23.37. Daily backups of the last 24 hours are included. Some features, including Windows and managed databases, are unavailable in its Local Zones.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want a cheap entry VPS with unlimited traffic and a broad product range.
United States · Per month by server or plan, published; discounts on some first terms
US provider selling the same VPS either self-managed or fully managed at one tier price: 4 GB (2 vCPU, 80 GB SSD, 3 TB bandwidth) is USD 17 a month and 8 GB is USD 45. Managed covers patching, monitoring and backups. Cloud VPS is also hourly. Promotions apply to new accounts only.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you want someone else to patch and monitor a server without leaving the VPS model.
Germany · Per month, published; introductory rate on a 1-year term, renewal higher
German host whose VPS+ plans show a promotional price for the first three months on a 1-year term (VPS S+ USD 2, XL+ USD 14) against a listed monthly price of USD 6 and USD 47. The page does not state the renewal price. Traffic is unlimited, locations are the US, UK, Germany and Spain.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you can commit for a year and want the cheapest first quarter.
Lithuania · Per month, published; lowest rate needs a 48-month term, renewal higher
KVM VPS plans are paid upfront for a term, so the monthly figure is the total divided by the term: KVM 2 (2 vCPU, 8 GB, 100 GB NVMe) shows USD 8.79 a month and renews at USD 14.99 on the 2-year term. Weekly backups are free, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and ten data centres.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you will commit for two years and want the most memory for the money.
Managed WordPress hosting, not a general VPS: plans are priced by bandwidth or visits, from USD 35 a month for one site, with extra sites at USD 30 each and extra disk at USD 20 per 20 GB. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies. You cannot run arbitrary services or choose your own operating system.
Switch from DigitalOcean if your Droplet only ever ran WordPress and you want the stack managed.
United States · Per month by plan; Essential published with a first-year discount, larger plans quoted
Managed WordPress platform billed annually, with first-year pricing for new customers on Essential only. Essential covers 25,000 to 400,000 visits and 10 to 50 GB of storage, and the page says overages may apply. It cannot replace a general-purpose Droplet that runs other software.
Switch from DigitalOcean if you run business WordPress sites and want hosting sold by visits with managed updates.
DigitalOcean remains the right choice when you want a plain cloud with predictable small plans, managed Kubernetes and managed databases from one account, and a free App Platform tier for static sites (three apps, 1 GiB of transfer each). Per-second billing for Droplets from 1 January 2026 helps short-lived workloads such as test runs. If your fleet is a handful of steady servers inside the transfer pool, the saving from a switch may not repay the migration weekend.

What moving off DigitalOcean involves
01
Snapshot, then rebuild with a script
Providers do not share a Droplet image format, so plan to rebuild the server from your own configuration scripts or container files, copy data across, and test the new host before changing DNS. Keep the old Droplet running for the overlap, because a stopped or powered-off server may still be billed at some providers until it is destroyed.
02
Translate the price, not the headline
Compare the same shape on each side: vCPU, memory, disk, included transfer and backups. Hetzner caps hourly billing at a monthly price, netcup bills by contract term, Hostinger and IONOS show promotional rates that renew higher, and Vultr and DigitalOcean both bill transfer beyond the allowance. Put the renewal price next to the first-term price before choosing.

Questions about replacing DigitalOcean
6 answers
What is the cheapest alternative to DigitalOcean?
On published entry prices, OVHcloud VPS-1 starts at USD 4.54 a month and Hetzner's CX23 at EUR 5.99 excluding VAT, against USD 4 for DigitalOcean's smallest Droplet.
IONOS and Hostinger show lower promotional rates that rise at renewal. Compare memory and traffic, not only the first figure.
Is Cloudways a real alternative to DigitalOcean?
Not an independent one. Cloudways says on its pricing page that it is part of DigitalOcean LLC, and it can run on DigitalOcean servers as well as Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Compute Engine.
It adds server management, with a 3-day trial and hourly billing, so it suits buyers who want management more than a different supplier.
Which alternatives are European?
Hetzner, netcup and IONOS (Germany), Infomaniak (hosted in Switzerland) and Krystal (sites in London and Amsterdam). We did not confirm OVHcloud's country from its page. DigitalOcean's own datacentre list also includes Frankfurt, but its contracting party is a US company under Delaware law.
Does any alternative bill without traffic surprises?
Infomaniak and OVHcloud list unlimited traffic on VPS, and IONOS and Krystal list unmetered or unlimited bandwidth.
Hetzner and Vultr bill beyond an allowance, at about one euro per TB and USD 0.01 per GB respectively. Read the traffic line of the exact plan you order.
What if my Droplet only runs WordPress?
Then a managed WordPress host such as Kinsta or WP Engine removes server work, but costs more per site and limits what you can install.
Plans are priced by visits or bandwidth, and overages can apply. A VPS with a panel such as Krystal's cPanel option is the cheaper middle route.
Can I keep DigitalOcean managed databases and move the servers?
Yes in principle, since a database reachable over the internet can stay while web servers move, but latency and egress charges rise. DigitalOcean bills outbound transfer beyond the pool at USD 0.01 per GiB. Moving both together is cleaner.
