Vultr alternatives: 11 web hosting tools compared

People look for a Vultr alternative when they want the same rented-by-the-hour virtual server with a different bill, a different jurisdiction or someone else running the stack. Vultr sells infrastructure in many product lines, so leavers split into three groups: those who want a cheaper or simpler VPS, those who want a European operator, and those who want the server managed for them.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Vultr in our web hosting ranking are DigitalOcean, Hetzner and Cloudways. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose DigitalOcean if you want the same self-managed cloud VM model from a vendor with published Droplet tables. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Web Hosting in 2026, and each says where it differs from Vultr.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Vultr

#10 of 18 in our web hosting ranking

  • Pricing: Per hour by resource, published; capped at a monthly rate
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Technical teams wanting cheap servers in many regions with hourly billing
  • Not for: Owners who need someone else to run the server
01

Why buyers look past Vultr

  1. 01

Bandwidth is metered per plan, and overages are billed

Vultr's own billing documentation has a Bandwidth Usage page that shows usage per Cloud Compute subscription and 'any overage fees incurred for exceeding your plan's bandwidth limits'. A site or download service with spiky traffic therefore has a second cost line next to the plan price. Several alternatives below publish unmetered or very large transfer allowances instead.

  2. 02

A wide product range for a buyer who may need one server

Vultr's documentation lists Cloud Compute, Optimized Cloud Compute, Cloud GPU, Bare Metal, VX1 Cloud Compute, Kubernetes, serverless inference, block, file and S3-compatible object storage, managed databases, CDN and a load balancer. That suits a team building on it. Someone who only wants to host a site and a database pays attention to a console built for much more than that.

  3. 03

Billing details that matter outside the United States

The Vultr billing FAQ contains the questions 'Why is my invoice in USD?' and 'Can I get an invoice in another currency?', and accepts cards, PayPal and several cryptocurrencies. We could not retrieve Vultr's public pricing page (it returned a 403 block to our automated requests), so we state no Vultr prices here. A buyer paying in euro, pounds or Swiss francs should read that page and the FAQ before comparing with the euro-priced alternatives.

What each one does differently

DigitalOcean

United States · Per second by resource, capped at a monthly rate, published

The closest like-for-like swap: hourly virtual machines called Droplets, with a monthly cap and an included transfer allowance per plan. The Basic range starts at 4 US dollars a month for 512 MiB. Droplets also come as CPU-Optimized, General Purpose, Memory-Optimized and Storage-Optimized. Like Vultr, it is infrastructure you administer yourself.

Switch from Vultr if you want the same self-managed cloud VM model from a vendor with published Droplet tables.

DigitalOcean, #9 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Hetzner

Germany · Per hour up to a monthly maximum, published; no introductory pricing, setup fee on some products

Cloud servers billed per hour up to a monthly price cap, with traffic billed only when outgoing and cloud servers in the EU including at least 20 TB. Locations are Germany, Finland, Singapore and the USA (Hillsboro and Ashburn). The cloud page marks some plan lines as currently unavailable, so stock should be checked before planning around one.

Switch from Vultr if you want hourly VPS billing with a monthly cap, large included traffic and mainly European locations.

Hetzner, #2 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Cloudways

Malta · By server size, published; billed hourly and invoiced monthly, 3-day trial

A managed layer, not a raw VPS: you pick DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS or Google Cloud as the underlying provider and Cloudways runs the stack. Plans are hourly, with a 3-day trial and no card for the Flexible tier. Its pricing page says it operates as part of DigitalOcean LLC. You pay for the management on top of the infrastructure.

Switch from Vultr if you like Vultr's servers but do not want to run the web stack yourself.

Cloudways, #17 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

netcup

Germany · Per month or per hour by resource, published

VPS plans with a traffic flat rate, DDoS protection and snapshots, priced in euro with a choice of 1, 12 or 24 month contract periods (12 months is 13 percent cheaper than monthly, 24 months 26 percent). It also sells ARM64 vServers, root servers and vGPU. The plain VPS has no dedicated CPU cores and no satisfaction guarantee, which netcup reserves for root servers.

Switch from Vultr if you will commit for 12 or 24 months in return for a lower euro price and a traffic flat rate.

netcup, #8 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

OVHcloud

France · Per month by resource or plan, published; web hosting discounted in the first year, renewal higher

VPS-1 starts at 4.54 US dollars a month on the page we fetched, with 2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe, unlimited traffic at 500 Mbps public bandwidth and a daily backup of the previous 24 hours included. Higher VPS tiers raise the public bandwidth to 1, 2 Gbps and more. Anti-DDoS is included. The VPS is one product in a very large OVHcloud catalogue.

Switch from Vultr if you want unlimited traffic at a stated bandwidth, included backups and a large operator behind the VPS.

OVHcloud, #12 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Krystal

United Kingdom · Per month by plan, published

A UK host (Krystal Hosting Ltd, registered in England and Wales) whose cloud VMs are priced in pounds per month and per hour, for example the C-1 with 1 GB RAM at 10 pounds a month. Each size lists its own transfer allowance, and bandwidth overage is a separate line. It also offers S3-compatible object storage and holds ISO 27001 and B Corp status.

Switch from Vultr if you want a UK-registered provider with pound pricing and hourly billing.

Krystal, #1 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Infomaniak

Switzerland · Per month by plan, published; 30-day free trial on web hosting

A Swiss provider that says it designs and hosts its solutions in Switzerland. VPS Lite starts at 2.70 Swiss francs a month with a 12-month commitment and unlimited traffic at 500 Mb/s. Lite carries no availability guarantee, no snapshots and blocks outbound port 25. VPS Cloud adds 10 Gb/s, a 99.99 percent guarantee and scaling in both directions.

Switch from Vultr if you want a Swiss-hosted VPS and can accept the Lite limits or step up to VPS Cloud.

Infomaniak, #5 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

IONOS

Germany · Per month, published; introductory rate on a 1-year term, renewal higher

VPS plans in the VPS+ range from a 1 vCore, 2 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe server, with unlimited traffic, no setup fees and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The headline price on the page we fetched is an introductory rate for 3 months on a 1-year term, so the figure after that is higher. A built-in AI assistant in the cloud panel handles firewall and restart tasks.

Switch from Vultr if you want a cheap first year, fixed term and a mainstream web-hosting company behind the VPS.

IONOS, #14 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Hostinger

Lithuania · Per month, published; lowest rate needs a 48-month term, renewal higher

KVM VPS plans with AMD EPYC, NVMe storage, 4 to 32 TB of bandwidth and weekly backups, sold at a discount on a long term. The page we fetched shows KVM 1 at a promotional rate and a higher renewal price after 2 years, so the renewal is the number to compare with Vultr. The company traces its start to Kaunas, Lithuania.

Switch from Vultr if you will prepay a long term for a low promotional rate and want weekly backups included.

Hostinger, #3 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

DreamHost

United States · Per month by plan, published; introductory rate, renewal higher

VPS plans from 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM with unmetered bandwidth, root access, Docker and KVM, and a one-click app library. The sale price covers the first 3 months and the plan then auto-renews at a higher rate. DreamHost's own page contrasts its unmetered model with providers that bill transfer overage per gigabyte.

Switch from Vultr if your main complaint is bandwidth overage billing and you accept a higher renewal price.

DreamHost, #7 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

Liquid Web

United States · Per month by server or plan, published; discounts on some first terms

VPS plans sold either self-managed or fully managed, with Linux or Windows, optional Interworx, cPanel or Plesk, and 24/7 support. A 4 GB RAM plan is listed at 17 US dollars a month, with 3 TB bandwidth. Liquid Web describes itself on the page as 'by Nexcess Corp.', and its range leans towards business sites and stores, not hourly developer instances.

Switch from Vultr if you want a managed VPS with phone and chat support instead of a console-only provider.

Liquid Web, #13 of 18 in our web hosting ranking →

04

When Vultr is still the right choice

Vultr remains reasonable when you need its specific product mix in one account: GPU instances, bare metal, Kubernetes and S3-compatible object storage next to ordinary cloud servers, in a network its documentation describes as 34 cloud data centre regions (the newest, Chennai, announced on 21 October 2026). If your traffic sits well inside plan allowances, the bandwidth overage line never appears, and the migration work to a new host would cost more than the difference in price. We could not read Vultr's pricing page, so test this against a current quote.

05

What moving off Vultr involves

  1. 01

Inventory the products before choosing a replacement

List every Vultr product you use: Cloud Compute, block storage, object storage, load balancer, snapshots, DNS. Object storage on Vultr is S3-compatible, so the data can be copied with S3 tools to another S3-compatible store. Snapshots are not portable between providers, so plan to rebuild servers from a script or an image and copy the data across.

  2. 02

Compare on the real bill, not the headline plan

Take last month's Vultr invoice including bandwidth usage and any overage, then price the same servers at two or three alternatives. Check the introductory period and the renewal price (IONOS, Hostinger and DreamHost all show a promotional first term), the term length (netcup, Infomaniak) and whether transfer is included or billed (Hetzner bills outgoing traffic above the allowance; DigitalOcean lists a transfer figure per plan).

Questions about replacing Vultr

6 answers
Is there a Vultr alternative with unmetered bandwidth?

Yes, in different forms. DreamHost's VPS page states unmetered bandwidth with no overage bills, IONOS lists unlimited traffic, and OVHcloud lists unlimited traffic at a stated public bandwidth per VPS tier.

Infomaniak's VPS Lite has unlimited traffic at 500 Mb/s. Check the bandwidth speed as well as the traffic claim.

Which alternative is closest to Vultr?

DigitalOcean is the closest by model: hourly cloud VMs with a monthly cap, a transfer allowance per plan and no managed web layer. Hetzner is similar with hourly billing up to a monthly cap, and Krystal offers monthly and hourly prices in pounds.

Can I keep Vultr servers but have someone manage them?

Cloudways lists Vultr among its supported infrastructure providers (with DigitalOcean, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud) and bills hourly. You still pay Cloudways for the managed layer, so the cost is not a saving by itself.

Which alternatives are hosted in Europe?

Hetzner lists locations in Germany and Finland as well as Singapore and the USA. Infomaniak states its infrastructure is designed and hosted in Switzerland.

netcup, IONOS and OVHcloud sell euro-priced VPS plans, but we did not verify their data centre locations for this page, so check the location list when ordering.

What does a VPS with a long contract cost to leave?

The cost is the unused months. netcup lists 12 and 24 month periods against a 1-month option, Infomaniak VPS Lite quotes its price with a 12-month commitment, and IONOS's headline rate sits on a 1-year term.

Hostinger and DreamHost show promotional rates that rise on renewal. Hetzner, DigitalOcean and Krystal bill by the hour, so deleting the server stops the charge.

Did you verify Vultr's own prices?

No. Vultr's pricing, company and terms pages returned HTTP 403 to our automated requests, so this page quotes only Vultr's public documentation and blog. Prices for Vultr plans are therefore left out on purpose.
