Vonage API alternatives: 11 SMS and voice apis tools compared

Searches for Vonage alternatives come from developers on the Vonage API platform (the former Nexmo), not from people shopping for an office phone system. They usually want rates they can read before signing up, a messaging vendor that is not a division of a telecoms equipment group, or a different channel mix. This page covers the API side only; Vonage's business phone product is a separate matter.

Short answer: Looking for a replacement for Vonage API? Twilio, Sinch and Telnyx come first in our SMS and voice apis ranking. The first three places are kept for challengers when the category has enough of them; the best-known brands come after that, in ranked order. Start with Twilio if you want a printed US rate card and an Irish contracting entity for European customers. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best SMS and Voice APIs in 2026, and each says where it differs from Vonage API.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Vonage API

#10 of 12 in our SMS and voice apis ranking

  • Pricing: Pay as you go per request against a balance topped up in the dashboard
  • Established in: Not stated by the vendor
  • Built for: Developers who want per-request billing and Verify or number lookup beside SMS
  • Not for: Buyers who need printed rates and a stated country before comparing
01

Why buyers look past Vonage API

  1. 01

The base rates sit in a spreadsheet and a calculator

Vonage's public SMS pricing page renders its country calculator in the browser, and the text we could read gives US carrier fees (for example $0.0035 per message to AT&T and $0.0045 to Verizon on long codes) but no base rate. The page points to a global pricing sheet in .xls format for every country. A buyer who wants to model a month before signing up has to download and read that file.

  2. 02

Parts of the vendor site are closed to automated reading

Several vonage.com pages returned a bot challenge or a 403 to our requests, while the developer documentation and the UK mirror of the pricing page loaded normally. This matters for procurement scripts and price monitors, which cannot rely on the main site. It says nothing about the service itself, but it makes rate comparison slower than at vendors that publish plain pages.

  3. 03

One brand covers two different businesses

Vonage describes itself as having brought unified communications, contact centres and communications APIs under one roof, and the documentation footer links to Vonage Business Cloud and Vonage Contact Center beside the API docs. Since July 2022 the group has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Ericsson. A developer who only wants SMS and voice endpoints may prefer a vendor whose whole catalogue is the API.

What each one does differently

Twilio

United States · Published

The default reference for programmable messaging. Its US page prints $0.0083 per segment and $1.15 a month for a leased long code, then lists carrier fees by network. Customers in the EEA and UK contract with Twilio Ireland Limited. Its free trial page promises no card at signup but states no credit amount.

Switch from Vonage API if you want a printed US rate card and an Irish contracting entity for European customers.

Twilio comes 8 of 12 when SMS and voice apis products are ranked here →

Sinch

Sweden · Published

A Swedish group that lists US 10DLC and toll-free messages at $0.0078 each way, with a $1 monthly and $1 setup fee per 10DLC number. It states that prices update at midnight UTC and that the rate in force at sending applies. It names no volume discounts on that page.

Switch from Vonage API if you want a Stockholm-based vendor with a readable per-country rate table.

Telnyx

United States · Published

Prices US local messages at $0.004 per part plus a carrier fee, and publishes tiers: pay as you go with no minimum, Growth from $2,000 a month with 15 percent off, Enterprise from $5,000 a month. Numbers cost $1.00 a month. Its own example shows carrier pass-through nearly doubling the headline rate.

Switch from Vonage API if you want committed-spend tiers whose thresholds are printed on the page.

Bird

Netherlands · Published

Dutch-contracted for customers outside the US (Bird B.V., Dutch law, Amsterdam courts). It sells SMS by destination and sender with an example of $0.0035 per US long-code segment, and plans that either add to your balance or buy capacity. Unused prepaid balance lapses after a year.

Switch from Vonage API if you want a European contracting party and are comfortable with plans that change capacity rather than price.

Infobip

Croatia · On request

Sells SMS, email, Viber, WhatsApp and voice from one account, but its pricing page lists no SMS rates and routes every sender type (alphanumeric, long number, short code, 10DLC, toll-free) to a sales contact. WhatsApp is billed per message, with utility, authentication, marketing and service categories priced separately.

Switch from Vonage API if your traffic mixes SMS with WhatsApp and Viber and you accept a sales conversation for numbers.

Bandwidth

United States · Published

Publishes a US-only rate card: SMS at $0.004 on 10DLC, $0.007 toll-free and $0.008 short code, voice at $0.0100 a minute outbound, billed in 6-second increments. SIP trunking has no published price and the page lists no number fees. Rates for other countries are not on that page.

Switch from Vonage API if your traffic is mostly US voice and SMS and you want per-minute voice rates in view.

Bandwidth comes 6 of 12 when SMS and voice apis products are ranked here →

Plivo

United States · Published

Its pay-as-you-go plan includes $10 in credit, no card, but covers the US and India only, at 2 requests per second and up to $2,500 of usage a month. SMS, WhatsApp and Verify start on the Enterprise plan, from $1,000 a month, with SMS from $0.0077.

Switch from Vonage API if you run voice or SIP in the US or India now and can accept an enterprise minimum later for SMS.

ClickSend

Australia · See profile

No subscription: you top up credit in four tiers (from $20, $500, $3,000 and $10,000) with savings of 7, 14 and 21 percent on the upper three. Inbound SMS is free. Its US page shows no voice for new customers, so it replaces only the messaging half of what Vonage offers.

Switch from Vonage API if you send SMS only and prefer prepaid top-ups with a bulk-saving ladder.

More on ClickSend: ranked 7 of 12 in SMS and voice apis →

Clickatell

Not stated by the vendor · On request

Offers a self-serve prepaid plan with a free-trial button and three further plans (Connect, Interact, Transact) that need a sales contact. The packages page we read lists SMS, WhatsApp, USSD and Apple Messages channels and no voice, so it leaves Vonage's Voice API unreplaced.

Switch from Vonage API if you want USSD and chat channels beside SMS and can start on a prepaid plan.

Clickatell, #9 of 12 in our SMS and voice apis ranking →

Amazon SNS

United States · On request

SMS is billed through AWS End User Messaging, whose country rates are in a downloadable CSV. Its price page lists US 10DLC registration at $4.50 for the company plus $10 a month per regular campaign, and a dedicated US short code at $650 setup and $995 a month. Billing and access run through AWS accounts.

Switch from Vonage API if your application already lives in AWS and you want SMS on the same invoice and IAM roles.

Azure Communication Services

United States · See profile

Ties senders to the Azure subscription's billing location: short codes need a paid subscription with a US billing address, toll-free senders are capped at 200 messages a minute, and a short code is approved over 8 to 12 weeks. Microsoft's FAQ also warns of breaking changes and retired services.

Switch from Vonage API if your stack is on Azure and you can wait through sender provisioning.

When Vonage API is still the right choice

Vonage API remains a reasonable choice when your account is already running and one platform covers your SMS, voice, Verify and number lookup traffic. The developer documentation is complete, the dashboard can be run by a team with limited access per member, and a new account starts with EUR 2 of test credit before any payment. If your sending paths are registered and delivering, switching only repeats sender registration. Move when rate visibility or the parent group matters to you, not out of habit.

05

What moving off Vonage API involves

  1. 01

Rebuild sender identity before the cutover

Vonage's sender guide limits the from value to a number of up to 15 digits or an alphanumeric string of up to 11 characters, and some countries replace it or require a virtual number. None of that carries to a new provider. Ask each candidate who files US 10DLC, toll-free or short code registration, and start weeks before you intend to stop sending through Vonage.

  2. 02

Check what you use beyond SMS

List every Vonage product your code calls: Messages, Voice with its call-flow JSON, Verify, Number Insight, SIP. A messaging-only vendor such as ClickSend or Clickatell will not take the voice flows, and Plivo or Bandwidth need rewriting of the call-control logic. Verify and lookup features need a named replacement, not an assumption.

  3. 03

Run both providers on a split during the switch

Keep Vonage live with a small balance, route a measured share of traffic to the new vendor and compare delivery receipts per country for two weeks. Vonage's docs mention SMPP access for existing aggregators, but it also says it does not offer high availability over SMPP, so do not treat SMPP as a safe fallback.

Questions about replacing Vonage API

6 answers
Is Vonage owned by Ericsson?

Yes. Ericsson's press release states that the acquisition completed on 21 July 2022 and that Vonage became a wholly owned subsidiary. Ericsson reports it within its Enterprise segment, in a business area it calls Global Communications Platform.

What does Vonage API cost per SMS?

We could not read a base rate from Vonage's pages. The UK mirror of its SMS pricing page shows US carrier fees (for instance $0.0035 per message for AT&T and $0.0045 for T-Mobile on long codes) and refers to a global pricing sheet for per-country rates.

Check that sheet and your dashboard at the time of purchase, as the page itself says pricing is updated periodically.

Does Vonage give free credit to try the API?

Its dashboard guide says a new account receives EUR 2 of free test credit and starts in demo mode, in which you can message up to 10 destination numbers and a demo notice is added to every SMS. You leave demo mode by adding credit.

Which Vonage alternative is the closest like-for-like?

Twilio and Sinch cover the same SMS and voice scope with published US rates. Bird fits buyers who want a Dutch contracting entity outside the US.

Bandwidth fits US-centred voice. Check each against the products you actually call, because Verify and number lookup are not matched everywhere.

Is there a European alternative to Vonage API?

Bird contracts through Bird B.V. in the Netherlands for customers outside the US, and Sinch is a Swedish group. Check Infobip's terms for its contracting entity, since contracting entities can differ by product and region, so read each vendor's terms before assuming EU law applies.

Does this page cover Vonage's business phone system?

No. Vonage Business Communications is a separate unified-communications product. If you are replacing office telephony, use our business phone systems category, which ranks tools such as RingCentral, Dialpad and 3CX.
