Nextcloud alternatives: 11 cloud storage tools compared

Nextcloud is open source software that an organisation installs on its own servers or rents from a hosting provider. Teams look elsewhere when running the server costs more staff time than the control is worth, when a subscription needs 100 users before support begins, or when they want files protected so that no operator can read them. The options run from smaller self-hostable software to fully managed encrypted services.

Short answer: Looking for a replacement for Nextcloud? Seafile, Filen and Internxt come first in our cloud storage ranking. Ranking order favours the challenger over the household name, so the best-known vendors begin at place 4 where the category allows it. Start with Seafile if you still want to self-host but only need files, sync and sharing. Below are 11 alternatives, each taken from the Best Cloud Storage for Business in 2026 ranking, with its main difference from Nextcloud.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Nextcloud

#7 of 24 in our cloud storage ranking

  • Not for: A team with no operations capacity
01

Why buyers look past Nextcloud

  1. 01

Someone has to run the server

Nextcloud's own requirements page asks for a 64-bit Linux server, a web server with PHP 8.3 to 8.5, and a database such as MariaDB or PostgreSQL, and it notes that PHP versions are deprecated every year. Updates, backups and tuning stay with your administrator unless you buy support, which is a real cost for a team of ten.

  2. 02

Paid support starts at 100 users

The Enterprise page states that subscriptions are available from 100 users and up, at 71.29 euros per user per year for Standard, 104.99 for Premium and 204.75 for Ultimate at that size. Standard carries a one-year maintenance life cycle. Smaller organisations are pointed to Nextcloud One, a managed service whose price the page does not list.

  3. 03

The platform is wider than file storage

Hub bundles Files, Talk, Groupware, Office, Assistant and Flow. Several of these, including Talk, Groupware and Office editors, are optional extras on some tiers. A group that only wants a place for shared documents carries a larger system to patch than it needs.

What each one does differently

Seafile

Singapore · Published

Seafile sells file sync and share software in the same self-host mould, with an open source Community Edition and a Pro Edition that is free for up to three users. Teams can rent its hosted Plus Cloud instead, run by SeaCloud Labs in Singapore, and try it for 30 days. Upkeep falls on the customer if self-hosted.

Switch from Nextcloud if you still want to self-host but only need files, sync and sharing.

Filen

Germany · Published

Filen, from Germany, encrypts files on your device before upload and hosts them in German data centres. Prices start under two euros a month by storage size, and several plans can be stacked on one account. It has a free tier. Our record notes that business features such as administration and audit are largely missing.

Switch from Nextcloud if you would rather pay a few euros than administer a server.

Internxt

Spain · Published

Internxt is a Spanish provider whose clients are open source, which makes it the closest in spirit to Nextcloud among the hosted choices. It sells yearly plans and a one-off lifetime payment, and offers 1 GB free. Our record describes performance as inconsistent and the feature set as thin.

Switch from Nextcloud if open source code matters to you but a hosted service is acceptable.

Internxt holds rank 3 among 24 entries in our cloud storage guide →

Koofr

Slovenia · Published

Koofr is a Slovenian service with EU data centres and a free 10 GB plan, then paid yearly tiers by size. It can attach Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive accounts, so a mixed estate can be searched in one place. Team administration, audit and permissions are limited, according to our record.

Switch from Nextcloud if you want cheap EU storage for a small group without running anything.

More on Koofr: ranked 2 of 24 in cloud storage →

Jottacloud

Norway · Published

Jottacloud stores data in Norway, publishes business prices by plan and user count, and builds device backup into the same client. The provider can technically read what you store because it is not end-to-end encrypted, and the unlimited personal plan slows uploads past a published threshold.

Switch from Nextcloud if a plain, predictable Nordic host with backup suits your small firm.

Proton Drive

Switzerland · Published

Proton Drive is Swiss and encrypts everything before it leaves the device, with open source clients and a free tier. Co-editing happens in Proton's own Docs and Sheets editors, not a full office suite, so it replaces the storage side of Nextcloud rather than the app platform. Sync lags the mainstream services.

Switch from Nextcloud if you need the provider unable to read files and can live without add-on apps.

Proton Drive holds rank 8 among 24 entries in our cloud storage guide →

Icedrive

Gibraltar · Published

Icedrive is run by Ice Privacy LTD in Gibraltar and applies client-side Twofish encryption on paid plans, sold monthly, yearly or as lifetime storage up to 2 TB. The free 10 GB account carries no encryption and no file history. Sharing works through folder invitations, with little else for teams.

Switch from Nextcloud if you are one person or a pair who want a lifetime storage purchase.

Full verdict on Icedrive, which sits at number 18 of 24 for cloud storage →

pCloud

Switzerland · Published

pCloud, a Swiss company, sells monthly, yearly and one-off lifetime plans and lets you hold data in the US or the EU. Client-side encryption is a paid extra on personal plans and comes with Business. Collaboration stays basic when set beside Nextcloud's Talk, calendar and office editing.

Switch from Nextcloud if you prefer a lifetime licence with an EU data location to maintaining servers.

Our cloud storage guide puts pCloud at 4 of 24; read why →

Tresorit

Switzerland · Published

Tresorit pairs end-to-end encryption with administration controls and granular sharing policy, which is why law firms and clinics use it. It is owned by Swiss Post, offers Swiss and EU hosting, and is priced per user per month. Our record flags high seat cost and slower large transfers.

Switch from Nextcloud if a regulated team wants managed encryption and can afford a premium.

More on Tresorit: ranked 6 of 24 in cloud storage →

Sync.com

Canada · Published

Sync.com is a Canadian service where every file is end-to-end encrypted by default, so the provider cannot read it. A free 5 GB plan exists and Teams plans are per user with at least three users. The trade is no server-side search and few integrations beyond Microsoft Office.

Switch from Nextcloud if confidentiality by default matters more than search or app extensions.

Where Sync.com stands: place 5 of 24 in the cloud storage ranking →

Zoho WorkDrive

India · Published

Zoho WorkDrive is an Indian vendor selling team folders, desktop sync, role-based permissions and an office editor for a per-user monthly price, from three users. A free 5 GB plan exists. It fits companies already on Zoho Mail or CRM, and our record says it is not end-to-end encrypted.

Switch from Nextcloud if you want hosted team folders cheaply and already run Zoho products.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want self-hosted software with less to run

Seafile: Community Edition is open source and the Pro Edition is free for up to three users; you still carry the upkeep.

  2. 02

You want storage the provider cannot read

Proton Drive: Everything is encrypted on the device, with open source clients and a free tier, in Proton's own Docs and Sheets editors.

  3. 03

You are under 100 users and want cheap EU hosting

Koofr: It offers a free 10 GB plan and yearly paid tiers from Slovenia, with limited team administration.

  4. 04

You work with regulated client material

Tresorit: It combines end-to-end encryption with sharing policy and admin controls, at a higher price per seat.

  5. 05

You want a one-off payment rather than a subscription

pCloud: Lifetime plans are sold, with a choice of US or EU data location.

04

When Nextcloud is still the right choice

Nextcloud remains the right call when you have administrators who enjoy it and a reason to keep data on infrastructure you control, including air-gapped sites. The Hub page lists on-premises, hosting-provider and hybrid options, and the AGPL licence means you can inspect the code. Files, Talk, calendar, contacts and office editing under one roof is something few hosted storage services match, and 200 or more users bring the Standard price down to 53.17 euros.

05

What moving off Nextcloud involves

  1. 01

Sharing structure has to be rebuilt

Nextcloud shares, public links and group folders are tied to your server address. Export the list of external recipients and recreate the same access in the new tool, then retire the old links on a set date so that nobody keeps using stale ones.

  2. 02

Apps you added will not follow

Calendar, Talk, Forms, Collectives and similar apps live inside Nextcloud. Before you move files, list which of those people actually use, and choose a separate tool for each, since most storage-only services carry none of them.

  3. 03

    Data sovereignty may weaken

Leaving a self-hosted system for a hosted one hands the data to a supplier. Check the operator's country, data centre location and encryption model in its contract, because those are separate questions.

Questions about replacing Nextcloud

6 answers
Is Nextcloud free?

The server software is open source under the AGPL licence and the Nextcloud-branded apps are free. Enterprise subscriptions, which add support and extra features, are priced per user per year and start at 100 users.

What does Nextcloud Enterprise cost?

At 100 or more users, Nextcloud lists Standard at 71.29 euros, Premium at 104.99 and Ultimate at 204.75 per user per year, before VAT. From 200 users the figures fall to 53.17, 81.99 and 183.75.

What if we have fewer than 100 users?

The pricing page says subscriptions begin at 100 users and points smaller organisations to Nextcloud One, a managed service, without printing a price. Running the free software yourself is the other route, relying on forum support.

Which alternative can I host myself?

Seafile is the other self-hostable option in our list, with a Community Edition and a Pro Edition that is free for three users. You carry updates and security work with either.

Which alternatives cannot read my files?

Proton Drive, Sync.com, Tresorit, Filen and Internxt describe encryption that keeps the provider out of your content. Jottacloud and Zoho WorkDrive are not end-to-end encrypted, per our records.

Does a hosted replacement include chat and calendar?

Generally not. Nextcloud's Talk and Groupware are part of its Hub, while the storage services above concentrate on files. Plan separate tools for meetings and calendars before you leave.
