Egnyte alternatives: 12 cloud storage tools compared

Teams look beyond Egnyte when the per-user price climbs with each governance or AI feature they add, or when they want their own encryption keys without a quote. Most move to an encrypted vault, a self-hosted platform, a bundled office suite or a client-facing sharing tool, depending on which part of the Egnyte stack they actually use.

Short answer: Tresorit, Nextcloud and Sync.com head the list of Egnyte alternatives drawn from our cloud storage ranking. Our rule for order: vendors outside the big brands go first, and the largest names are not placed in the top three. Tresorit is the one to try if you want the vendor unable to read your files, and key custody matters more than workflow automation. Every one of the 12 products below comes from Best Cloud Storage for Business in 2026, with a note on how it departs from Egnyte.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Egnyte

#11 of 24 in our cloud storage ranking

  • Pricing: Per user per month, published from $10 on the Team plan; top Ultimate tier quoted
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: A regulated firm that must govern and locate every file
  • Not for: A company that wants straightforward file sync and nothing more
01

Why buyers look past Egnyte

  1. 01

Feature gates move the price in steps

Egnyte's pricing page shows Business at $22, Enterprise Lite at $39 and Elite at $48 per user per month, billed annually, with Ultimate on quote. The AI Assistant, AI Search, PDF markup, e-signature and dynamic watermarking only begin at Elite, so a team that wants one of them pays the Elite rate for every seat. The $10 Team plan stops at 10 users.

  2. 02

Your own keys sit on the top tier

The feature table states that Egnyte-managed encryption keys come with every plan, while customer-managed keys are available on Ultimate only. Ransomware detection with snapshot recovery is likewise listed under Ultimate. A regulated company that treats key custody as a requirement therefore negotiates a quote, not a list price.

  3. 03

Much of the platform targets large file estates

Egnyte describes itself as a secure file server in the cloud, with edge caching, a classification engine, lifecycle policies and options for architecture, finance and life-science firms. A ten-person agency that wants shared folders and external links buys a platform whose weight is aimed elsewhere, which is why smaller buyers compare simpler tools.

04

When Egnyte is still the right choice

Egnyte remains the better choice for organisations replacing an on-site file server, where edge caching, desktop access to cloud files and lifecycle policies are in daily use. Its feature table lists compliant storage for HIPAA, FINRA, SOC 2 and ISO/IEC 27001, data residency on Azure, AWS or GCP storage, and sector options for architecture, financial services and life sciences. Teams that already use the Elite tier for AI search, e-signature and watermarking would have to assemble those from several vendors elsewhere. The company lists offices in Mountain View, Raleigh, Draper, Poznan, Reading and Mumbai.

05

What moving off Egnyte involves

  1. 01

Map what each tier currently gives you

Open the feature table and tick the items your teams use: workflows, watermarking, classification, lifecycle policies, snapshots. Anything on Elite or Ultimate that nobody opened this year is scope you can drop. Anything actually in use needs a named replacement before the contract ends.

  2. 02

Move permissions and external links in a pilot

Folder permissions, email-validated shares and external accounts do not carry over by export alone. Move one project folder, reissue its links and check that outside parties can still reach what they need. Keep Egnyte read-only for a quarter in case an old version turns up.

  3. 03

Decide on keys and data location first

If you rely on a data region or on customer-managed keys, confirm the new vendor offers both before copying any data. Tresorit and Sync.com state residency options, and Nextcloud lets you choose the server itself.

Questions about replacing Egnyte

7 answers
What is the best alternative to Egnyte as cloud storage software?

Tresorit comes first in our list for teams that want end-to-end encryption, from three users on Business.

Nextcloud follows for self-hosting, with Enterprise from €71.29 per user per year at 100 users, then Sync.com, whose Teams 1 TB plan lists $6 per user per month billed annually, and Zoho WorkDrive.

What does Egnyte cost compared with its rivals?

Egnyte lists $10 for Team (1 to 10 users), $22 Business, $39 Enterprise Lite and $48 Elite per user per month billed annually.

ShareFile starts at $16.50, Google Workspace Standard at €13.60 on monthly billing, and Jottacloud Business Small at NOK 129 a month for two users. Sync.com Teams starts at $6 for 1 TB.

Which Egnyte alternative lets us hold our own encryption keys?

Egnyte reserves customer-managed keys for Ultimate. Tresorit describes a zero-knowledge system in which the vendor cannot read files or keys, Sync and Filen both state zero-knowledge encryption, and Nextcloud on your own server leaves key handling with you.

Check each vendor's key documentation before relying on this.

Is there an Egnyte alternative for a very small team?

Egnyte's Team plan is $10 per user and covers 1 to 10 users.

Sync.com starts at three users, Zoho WorkDrive at three, Jottacloud Business Small covers two users for NOK 129 a month, and Proton Workspace Standard bills $12.99 per user with 1 TB each, including mail and meetings.

Which alternative suits client-facing document exchange?

ShareFile Premium adds a client portal, e-signature, forms and requests at $26 per user per month annually, with a three-user minimum. Tresorit also sells Engage data rooms, and Egnyte itself lists document portal options for financial services.

Can we self-host instead of using Egnyte?

Nextcloud is the option here: the server is free under AGPL and you run it, or pay for an Enterprise subscription from 100 users. Egnyte's pages describe a cloud service with a virtual caching appliance for edge access, not a self-hosted server.

Which alternative works for a company already on Google or Microsoft apps?

Google Drive through Workspace pools 2 TB per user on Standard at €13.60 monthly. Egnyte itself lists Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 co-editing on Business, so the shift is only worth it if the governance layer is not used.
