Vercel alternatives: 11 backend and app hosting platforms compared

People look for a Vercel alternative when the bill stops being a flat figure: seats, a usage credit and metered transfer, functions and requests all move it. Hobby is for personal, non-commercial use only, so a paid project must move to Pro. Teams go to another front-end host, a container platform, or a backend platform with its own hosting.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Vercel in our backend and app hosting platform ranking are Netlify, Cloudflare Pages and Render. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Netlify if you want the same Git-to-site workflow with unlimited members on Pro and a credit budget instead of seats. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Backend and App Hosting Platforms in 2026, and each says where it differs from Vercel.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Vercel

#8 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking

  • Pricing: Free Hobby plan for personal use; Pro per seat plus usage credit, published
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Next.js teams that want deploy previews and the shortest path to production
  • Not for: Commercial projects wanting a fixed price or traffic-proof bill
01

Why buyers look past Vercel

  1. 01

Pro is a seat price plus a usage meter

Pro costs USD 20 a month and includes a USD 20 usage credit, with developer seats at USD 20 a month each at the time of checking. Past the credit you pay as you go: Fast Data Transfer beyond the included 1 TB is from USD 0.15 per GB, and function invocations beyond the included allowance are from USD 0.60 per million. A team of five developers starts at the seat total before any traffic is counted.

  2. 02

The free plan cannot carry a business

The Hobby plan is described as personal, non-commercial use, and a Hobby account cannot buy usage beyond its caps (100 GB of Fast Data Transfer and 1 million function invocations a month). Vercel's terms also say that content on a Hobby plan or trial Pro plan can be used for AI model training, while on paid Pro it is off unless you opt in. A side project that earns money therefore has to pay or leave.

  3. 03

Spend control is a setting you must choose

New teams get a default on-demand budget of USD 200 that triggers notifications at that amount. Pausing every project automatically at 100 percent is an option you configure, not the default. A buyer who wants a cap that stops the bill needs to set it, and one who wants a fixed monthly price will find the meters hard to forecast.

What each one does differently

Netlify

United States · Free plan with a credit cap; Personal and Pro tiers with credits, published

The closest like-for-like front-end host, but billed in credits: Free gives 300 credits, Personal USD 9 a month for 1,000, Pro USD 20 a month for 3,000 with unlimited members. A production deploy costs 15 credits and bandwidth 20 credits per GB. When credits run out, every project on the account pauses.

Switch from Vercel if you want the same Git-to-site workflow with unlimited members on Pro and a credit budget instead of seats.

Cloudflare Pages

United States · Free plan with build limits; Functions metered as Workers requests

Static assets are served free and unlimited, and Pages Functions are billed as Workers: 100,000 requests a day on the free plan, or a USD 5 a month minimum with 10 million requests included. There is no data transfer charge. The free plan allows 500 builds a month and one build at a time.

Switch from Vercel if most of your traffic is static or cacheable and egress charges are what you want to remove.

Render

United States · Free instance types; workspace tiers plus per-instance compute, published

Runs real servers as well as static sites. Workspaces are Hobby at USD 0, Pro at USD 25 a month and Scale at USD 499, plus compute: a 512 MB instance is USD 7 a month and a 2 GB instance USD 25. Hobby includes 5 GB of bandwidth, Pro 25 GB, and free instances are labelled not for production.

Switch from Vercel if you need long-running web services, workers or Postgres next to the front end at a fixed instance price.

Render, #3 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking →

Railway

United States · Free plan after a 30-day trial; Hobby and Pro minimums plus usage, published

Container hosting billed per second on CPU, memory and egress (USD 20 per vCPU a month, USD 10 per GB of memory, USD 0.05 per GB egress). Hobby has a USD 5 minimum with USD 5 of credit and Pro USD 20 with unlimited seats. The free plan is a 30-day trial with USD 5, then USD 1 a month.

Switch from Vercel if you run a full-stack app with databases and want metered resource billing with unlimited seats on Pro.

Railway, #5 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking →

Fly.io

United States · No platform fee; per-second resource billing, published; 7-day trial

Virtual machines billed by the second with no monthly platform fee, starting at USD 2.19 a month for a 256 MB shared CPU in Ashburn. Outbound traffic is USD 0.02 per GB in North America and Europe. The trial is 2 hours or 7 days and then needs a card. It is infrastructure, not a front-end workflow.

Switch from Vercel if you want to place containers in specific regions and pay for exactly the machines you run.

Appwrite

Israel · Free plan; Pro per project with usage add-ons, published

A backend platform with Appwrite Sites for hosting web apps, and a migration guide from Vercel in its docs. It is open source under BSD-3-Clause and can be self-hosted with Docker or Kubernetes. Database compute starts at USD 10 a month, and a Free project freezes at its limit. We could not read its plan prices.

Switch from Vercel if you want hosting, auth and database in one open-source product you could also run yourself.

Appwrite, #2 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking →

Supabase

Singapore · Free plan; Pro and Team tiers plus compute add-ons, published

Primarily a Postgres backend with auth, storage and Edge Functions, not a front-end host. Free allows 2 projects that pause after a week of inactivity. Pro starts at USD 25 a month with 250 GB egress and a USD 10 compute credit. The code is Apache-2.0 and self-hosting is community-supported.

Switch from Vercel if your Vercel project is mostly a front end on top of a database and you need the database side priced fairly.

Supabase, #1 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking →

Convex

United States · Free and Starter plan; Professional per developer, published

A reactive backend where queries and mutations run in TypeScript, with file storage, crons and auth. Free and Starter is pay as you go, Professional is USD 25 per developer a month with 25 million function calls included. The backend is self-hostable under an FSL licence that converts to Apache 2.0 after two years.

Switch from Vercel if you want real-time data and server functions in one product and keep the front end elsewhere.

Convex, #4 of 12 in our backend and app hosting platform ranking →

Firebase

United States · Free Spark plan; Blaze pay-as-you-go at Google Cloud rates, published

A Google backend with Hosting and App Hosting. Hosting has 10 GB of storage and 360 MB a day of transfer at no cost, then USD 0.15 per GB. App Hosting needs the pay-as-you-go Blaze plan and bills outgoing bandwidth at USD 0.20 per GiB uncached after 10 GiB.

Switch from Vercel if you already use Firestore or Firebase Auth and want hosting inside the same console and bill.

AWS Amplify

United States · Pay per build minute, storage and transfer, published; new-account credits

AWS hosting priced per build minute (USD 0.01 standard), per GB stored (USD 0.023), per GB served (USD 0.15) and per SSR request and duration. The free tier lasts 12 months. A web application firewall adds USD 15 a month per app. It suits teams already running on AWS accounts and billing.

Switch from Vercel if your company already standardises on AWS and wants the front end on the same invoice.

Heroku

United States · Dyno tiers from Eco to Performance, published; add-ons billed separately

A dyno-based platform owned by Salesforce, with monthly prices from the USD 5 Eco dyno (sleeps after 30 minutes idle) to USD 25 for Standard-1X. Postgres is separate, from USD 5 a month. Its pricing page lists dynos and databases, not a front-end delivery network.

Switch from Vercel if your Vercel project has grown into a long-running server app and you want fixed dyno prices.

When Vercel is still the right choice

Vercel is still the right choice if you are a small team, your usage fits inside the USD 20 credit and the 1 TB transfer allowance, and you value a Pro plan that lets you add unlimited viewer seats and pay only for the developers who deploy. The 800-second maximum function duration on Pro and the 45-minute build limit cover most web apps. Staying also saves you a migration, which costs engineering hours that a small saving may not repay. Set the spend limit before you rely on it.

05

What moving off Vercel involves

  1. 01

Check the limits that change shape, not only the price

Before you move, list what your project actually uses: build length (Vercel allows 45 minutes), function duration (up to 800 seconds on Pro), the size of your uploads and your monthly transfer. Cloudflare Workers bills CPU time and defaults to 30 seconds of it per invocation, Firebase Hosting caps free transfer at 360 MB a day, and Netlify pauses all projects when credits run out. A limit you did not know you used is where a move fails.

  2. 02

Move the hosting, keep the domain and the Git repository

Your code stays in Git, so the move is mostly environment variables, build settings, domains and any Vercel-specific features you adopted. Point a test branch at the new host, compare the output, then switch DNS. Appwrite documents a migration from Vercel for Sites. Keep the old project running until the new one has served real traffic, and cancel Pro only after the last invoice has settled.

Questions about replacing Vercel

6 answers
How much does Vercel Pro cost in practice?

Pro is USD 20 a month with a USD 20 usage credit, plus USD 20 a month for each developer seat at the time of checking.

Viewer seats are unlimited. Usage past the credit is billed on demand, for example Fast Data Transfer from USD 0.15 per GB after the included 1 TB.

Can I use the Vercel Hobby plan for a business site?

Not under the pricing page, which describes Hobby as personal, non-commercial use, and the terms repeat that. Hobby also cannot buy extra usage, so it stops at its caps, for example 100 GB of transfer a month.

Does Vercel cap my spending?

By default it sends notifications at a USD 200 on-demand budget. You can configure an automatic pause of all projects at 100 percent, but that hard limit is optional.

Which alternative has the lowest entry price for a static site?

Cloudflare Pages serves static assets free and unlimited, with 500 builds a month on its free plan. Netlify has a free plan of 300 credits. Both depend on your traffic and on which paid features you add later.

Which alternatives can I run myself instead of renting?

Appwrite (BSD-3-Clause) and Supabase (Apache-2.0) publish their code and document self-hosting, and Convex publishes its backend under an FSL licence. Self-hosting moves updates, backups and scaling to you, which the vendors say themselves.

Is Vercel's data used to train AI models?

Vercel's terms say content on a Hobby or trial Pro plan can be used for model training. On a paid Pro plan training is not enabled by default and you may opt in or out in settings.
