Vercel vs Firebase

Vercel hosts and deploys front ends, above all Next.js. Firebase is Google's backend bundle of Firestore, auth, storage and hosting, sold through a no-cost Spark plan and a pay-as-you-go Blaze plan. They overlap on hosting but rarely replace each other.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    Starting without paying

Firebase Spark needs no payment method and allows 1 GiB of Firestore storage and 50K reads a day. Vercel Hobby is free but only for non-commercial personal use. A commercial prototype can begin on Spark; on Vercel it starts at the $20 Pro plan.

  2. 02

    Shape of the metered bill

Vercel Pro includes $20 of usage credit and then bills transfer, requests, ISR reads and writes and blob operations. Firebase Blaze bills per operation at Google Cloud rates, and phone sign-in is charged per SMS. Both are traffic-driven; Firebase also scales with document counts.

    Depends on the buyer

  3. 03

    Backend built in

Firebase gives auth, Firestore, storage, hosting and messaging behind client SDKs. Vercel offers functions, a firewall and observability but its pages describe deployment rather than a database. For data and users, Firebase has far more in the box.

  4. 04

    Lock-in

Firebase's managed Firestore export needs Blaze and writes to a Cloud Storage bucket, and the data model has no SQL layer. Vercel's lock-in is mainly platform features, since the deployed code is a normal Next.js app. Vercel is the easier vendor to leave.

When neither fits

If you want SQL with an open-source exit, look at Supabase. For a simpler flat app host, Render is worth comparing.

Vercel or Firebase: questions

3 answers
Can I use both together?

Yes, a common pattern is a Next.js front end on Vercel with Firebase for auth and data, since they cover different layers.

Does Firebase work on the free plan for production?

Spark has no-cost quotas, but Cloud Functions are not available there and managed Firestore export needs Blaze.

What does Vercel Pro cost?

$20 per month with $20 of included usage credit, plus a free trial, per its pricing page.
