Licence cost as the estate grows
Zabbix is entirely free software: no host cap and nothing held behind a paid tier, with Silver, Gold and Platinum subscriptions from $325 buying support only. Checkmk's free Community edition stops at about 100 hosts, after which Pro starts at €190 a month, Cloud at €240 and Ultimate at €275. Checkmk's list is public, but Zabbix has no list at all.

Getting the first hosts monitored
Point Checkmk at a host and it finds the filesystems, interfaces and services and sets sensible checks, backed by more than 2,000 integration checks, so the first hundred hosts take a day. Zabbix templates need adapting, and its interface and default alerting need substantial work before they are useful. For onboarding an estate nobody documented, Checkmk is the faster route.

Who owns the vendor
Zabbix has been founder-owned in Riga for twenty years with no outside investors. Checkmk keeps its legal headquarters in Munich, but PSG Equity, a US growth-equity firm, took a majority stake in February 2025. Neither fact changes the product today. It matters only to a buyer with an ownership or jurisdiction criterion, who should weigh it accordingly.

The upkeep bill in hours
Neither runs itself. Zabbix self-hosting means owning database tuning as the estate grows, and major version upgrades demand attention; without a named owner it drifts into a wall of ignored alerts. Checkmk's major upgrades still mean real configuration rework, and its configuration model is unusual for Nagios veterans. Both need someone accountable for the installation.

If the incidents that hurt are found by searching log lines rather than by status checks, neither fits: both are built around state and metrics. Graylog starts from the log and has a free edition with uncapped ingest; Elastic Observability keeps logs, traces and metrics in one self-hostable store.
