Teams rarely leave 1Password over the product itself. They look elsewhere when a security review demands source code that can be inspected, when policy says the vault must run on the organisation's own servers, or when the per-user price is set against cheaper rivals. 1Password is closed source. In a category whose whole value rests on cryptography, some security reviews require that the client can be read and not merely trusted. Its assurance rests on SOC 2 Type 2 certification, independent assessments and a bug bounty, which does not satisfy a reviewer who wants the code.
1Password is sold as a hosted service. The one self-hosted piece in its developer documentation is Connect server, a REST API that serves items inside your network, not the vault itself. Organisations whose policy forbids storing credentials with a third party turn to Bitwarden or Psono, which run on their own infrastructure.
1Password Business is listed at $8.99 USD per user per month, paid annually. Bitwarden lists Teams at $4 and Enterprise at $6, Keeper starts at $2, and NordPass and Proton Pass start under two euros per user. A buyer who only needs shared credentials under control may decide the design quality is not worth the difference.

LastPass splits business into three tiers: Teams for up to 50 users, Business with no user limit, and Business Max, which adds unlimited SSO apps, advanced MFA and SaaS monitoring. It lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II. Unlike 1Password it has a free personal plan, limited to one device type. Like 1Password it is closed source and hosted only.

1Password is still the right choice where adoption decides whether the project works. We rate it the best-designed manager in the category and the one people keep using after a month, and its Secret Key, which never reaches 1Password's servers, leaves stolen server data useless on its own. If no review demands open source or self-hosting, the alternatives mostly trade that usability away.
Export and import deal with individual logins. The structure around them is the real work: which vaults are shared with which teams, and who administers each. Rebuild that map deliberately in the new manager so shared credentials do not end up tied to one person's account.
1Password's developer tooling includes a CLI, SDKs, service accounts, SSH key handling and CI/CD integrations, so credentials may be wired into engineering workflows as well as the browser extension. Ask engineering where that is the case before cancelling. NordPass, for one, offers nothing equivalent, so choose the replacement with this in mind.
Staff moving from the best interface in the category will judge the replacement on how filling a password feels. Try the new extension against your most awkward internal application and on the phones people carry. If it is slower than the old habit, passwords drift back to spreadsheets.
Bitwarden is the closest: clients and server are open source and audited every year, and it can be self-hosted.
Psono is also open source and aimed at self-hosting, and Proton Pass publishes its browser extensions and mobile apps on GitHub. All three give up some of 1Password's polish.
Not the vault. 1Password is a hosted service; its documentation offers Connect server, a self-hosted REST API for reading items inside your own network, which still depends on the hosted account.
If the vault must stay on your infrastructure, Bitwarden and Psono can be run yourself.
On transparency and list price Bitwarden is ahead: open source, audited annually, and $4 per user per month for Teams against $8.99 USD for 1Password Business.
On interface 1Password is ahead, and Bitwarden's admin console is plainer. It depends on whether your rollout hinges on how the product feels.
Keeper is the one regulated buyers pick: it lists FedRAMP High authorisation, ISO 27001 and FIPS 140-3 validation, and enforces policy by role. Budget carefully, because BreachWatch, Secrets Manager and advanced reporting are separate add-ons. CyberArk suits enterprises already running its privileged access platform.
1Password has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. Bitwarden has an always-free personal plan, Proton Pass a free plan with unlimited logins and ten email aliases, and NordPass a free plan for one user on one device at a time. None includes business administration.
