PrestaShop alternatives: 11 ecommerce platforms compared

Shops leave PrestaShop for different reasons: the server and its upgrades are theirs to run, the free download leads to paid add-ons and service packs, and the hosted plan is a narrow entry offer. The list below runs from code-first frameworks and fixed-fee European editions to WordPress, B2B suites and hosted stores.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to PrestaShop in our ecommerce platform ranking are Sylius, OXID eShop and Medusa. We open the ranking with smaller vendors and put the established brands from fourth place onward. Choose Sylius if your developers already work in Symfony and want to own the code rather than assemble modules. The 11 entries that follow are all ranked in Best Ecommerce Platform in 2026; each one explains what sets it apart from PrestaShop.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

PrestaShop

#5 of 14 in our ecommerce platform ranking

  • Pricing: Free download; hosted plan from €24 a month, published; modules paid
  • Established in: France
  • Built for: A European store that wants commerce as the core, self-hosted
  • Not for: A team that cannot vet modules or manage upgrades

Why buyers look past PrestaShop

  1. 01

You carry the server, the PHP version and the upgrades

On the Classic offer you pick the hosting provider and domain and complete the installation yourself. The system requirements for PrestaShop 9 name PHP 8.1 to 8.5, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.2 at the least, and a memory limit of 512M or more. A shop on an older PHP has to be brought forward before the new release can be installed.

  2. 02

Help beyond installation is sold in packs

The Classic page describes help with installation and configuration within 48 hours. After that, the support page lists paid packs: a Migration and Updates audit at €300, a Performance pack from €90, an SEO pack from €550 and a Security pack from €1,490. Those are sensible services, but they show where the cost of a free download ends up.

  3. 03

The hosted plan is small and its base is older

PrestaShop Hosted costs €29 a month, or €24 a month billed as €290 for a year, and includes 50 GB of storage at Gandi. The page says it is based on PrestaShop 8 and does not state where the servers are or whether several shops can run in one account. A shop that outgrows it returns to self-hosting or to another platform.

What each one does differently

Sylius

Poland · Published

Sylius is a Symfony codebase from Poznań in Poland with an API Platform layer, and the standard edition is MIT licensed. Sylius Plus starts at €800 a year and is priced on the shop's online GMV, adding a B2B suite with price lists for customer groups, multi-store from one admin and role-based access control. A PHP team can build on it directly, without a module market in between.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want a fixed licence fee in euros

OXID eShop: Community is €121 a month on a 36-month term, with a reduction below €100,000 annual revenue, and OXID states that it takes no revenue share.

  2. 02

You want to own PHP code in a modern framework

Sylius: The standard edition is MIT licensed and Plus starts at €800 a year, priced on GMV, with a B2B suite and multi-store.

  3. 03

You already run your content on WordPress

WooCommerce: The plugin is free with a 0% revenue share; hosting is quoted at $25 to $350 a month and extensions at $29 to $299 a year.

  4. 04

You need B2B ordering and customer groups

Shopware: Evolve from €2,400 a month adds quotes and budgets, and customer-specific pricing is on Beyond.

  5. 05

You have a website and only need a shop on it

Ecwid by Lightspeed: Starter is $5 a month for up to 10 products, and all plans list $0 in transaction fees.

04

When PrestaShop is still the right choice

PrestaShop remains the sensible choice when you want a shop built as commerce software from the start, owned by you and editable in code. The free download comes from a French project with a public GitHub repository, the marketplace lists more than 3,200 themes and modules, and over 250 certified experts are listed for Classic users. The hosted plan has a 14-day trial and PrestaShop Checkout, built with PayPal, is included. A shop that runs well on a current PHP version gains little by migrating.

05

What moving off PrestaShop involves

  1. 01

Take stock of modules before choosing a destination

List every module and theme the shop uses, including payment, invoicing and shipping. Each one needs an equivalent, a replacement or a decision to drop it, and that list decides which platform on this page is realistic.

  2. 02

Export catalogue, customers and order history

Ask your developer for a clean export of products with images, customer accounts and past orders, and keep a copy of the database. Order numbers and invoices may be needed for accounting years after the shop has moved.

  3. 03

Preserve addresses, then run a short pilot

Map old product and category URLs to new ones with redirects, so search traffic is not lost. Open the new shop for a test group, run a few real orders including a return, and only then switch the domain.
