n8n alternatives: 12 robotic process automation tools compared

The typical searcher built workflows in n8n, then ran into execution-based cloud limits, a source-available licence that is not open source in the strict sense, or a requirement to automate desktop applications that have no API. They move to a dedicated RPA suite with bots, or to a vendor that runs the same job under a licence their legal team already knows.

Short answer: The closest replacements for n8n in our robotic process automation ranking are Power Automate, UiPath and Automation Anywhere. Choose Power Automate if you want desktop automation on Windows inside a Microsoft estate and prefer per-user pricing. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best RPA Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from n8n.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

n8n

Why buyers look past n8n

  1. 01

Executions are the meter, and the caps are low

n8n Cloud is metered by workflow executions: Starter allows 2,500 a month and Pro 10,000, with concurrency capped at 5 and 50 respectively. A scheduled workflow that fires every few minutes uses a plan quickly. Business, at 40,000 executions, is listed as self-hosted only, so teams that want a managed cloud at that volume have to ask for Enterprise.

  2. 02

The free edition is not the paid product

The Community Edition is free to self-host, but n8n's own documentation says it leaves out projects, SSO (SAML and LDAP), workflow and credential sharing, Git-based version control, external secrets and log streaming. Those are the features a team needs once more than one person owns the workflows, and they sit behind a licence key.

  3. 03

Source-available, with limits on what you may do

The code on GitHub is under n8n's Sustainable Use Licence, which permits use for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial use, and bars you from distributing it to others except free of charge for non-commercial purposes. Files marked .ee need a separate Enterprise licence. Organisations that need an OSI-approved licence, or that want to resell a product built on n8n, have to look elsewhere.

Switch from n8n if you need an RPA platform with a free tier to start and a quoted enterprise tier later.

UiPath, #2 of 13 in our robotic process automation ranking →

Automation Anywhere

United States · Quoted per organisation; Community Edition at no cost for learners and small businesses

Switch from n8n if you want a self-run, open-source robot tool and have engineers to support it.

OpenRPA, #3 of 13 in our robotic process automation ranking →

ElectroNeek

United States · Quoted per organisation; attended and unattended bots unlimited

Sells custom packages rather than published tiers, with RPA bots, document processing and process management as separate offers. Its RPA page states unlimited free RPA bots, both attended and unattended, with SaaS and on-premise orchestration. There is a trial but no free plan.

Switch from n8n if you want unlimited bots on a negotiated package with a choice of SaaS or on-premise orchestration.

When n8n is still the right choice

n8n remains the right choice when your automations connect services that have APIs, your engineers are comfortable owning workflows, and the volume fits the plan. All paid plans include unlimited users, unlimited workflows and all integrations, the Community Edition costs nothing to self-host, and you can read the code. An RPA suite buys bots for screens with no API, at a higher price and with more administration.

05

What moving off n8n involves

  1. 01

Inventory what is API-driven and what is screen-driven

Before buying anything, list each workflow and mark whether it calls an API or webhook, or whether it clicks through a desktop application. The API-driven ones rarely need an RPA licence. The screen-driven ones are the real reason to move, and they decide which products are on your shortlist.

  2. 02

Rebuilding is the cost, not exporting

Workflows do not transfer between products, so every automation is rebuilt in the new designer. Run old and new side by side for a cycle, keep the n8n instance on a read-only basis until the replacement has run cleanly, and check how credentials and secrets are stored before you re-enter them.

Questions about replacing n8n

6 answers
Is n8n open source?

n8n describes itself in its documentation as fair-code licensed.

The code is under the Sustainable Use Licence, which restricts use to internal business or non-commercial purposes and limits distribution, so it is source-available rather than open source in the OSI sense. Files marked .ee require a separate Enterprise licence.

What does n8n Cloud cost?

Starter is EUR 20 a month and Pro EUR 50 a month on annual billing, with 2,500 and 10,000 workflow executions a month. Business is EUR 667 a month on annual billing with 40,000 executions, but is listed as self-hosted only. Enterprise is quoted.

Where is n8n based?

The imprint on n8n's website names n8n GmbH, Novalisstr. 10, 10115 Berlin, Germany.

Can I stay free by self-hosting?

Yes, the Community Edition is free to self-host. It leaves out projects, SSO, workflow and credential sharing, Git-based version control, external secrets and log streaming, and registering with an email unlocks folders, debugging and custom execution data.

Is n8n an RPA tool?

n8n's documentation describes it as a workflow automation tool combining AI features with business process automation. We found no desktop robot product on its documentation or pricing pages, which is why it is the lightest entry in this category.

Which alternative has a free tier?

UiPath lists a free Community tier and Automation Anywhere offers a free Cloud Community Edition. OpenRPA is free and open source. IBM offers a 30-day trial, and Power Automate a 30-day free trial.
