GitLab alternatives: 7 version control tools compared
GitLab alternatives are sought by small teams that use a fraction of the platform, by organisations put off by the step up to Premium pricing and a custom-quoted Ultimate, and by self-hosters who find the server heavy. They tend to go to GitHub for the ecosystem and lower seat price, or to Gitea and Forgejo for something lighter.
Pricing: Free tier, capped at 5 users per private group on GitLab.com; Premium $29 per user per month billed annually, published; Ultimate custom priced

01
Why buyers look past GitLab
01
More platform than a small team uses
GitLab answers version control, CI/CD, a container registry, security scanning and issue planning in one product. That breadth is more than a small team will use, and a team that only wants a code host and a review workflow is carrying the rest. GitLab.com's Free tier also stops at five users per private group.
02
Paid tiers are priced for the whole platform
Premium is published at $29 per user per month, billed annually, and Ultimate is quoted on request. GitHub lists Team at $4 and Enterprise at $21 for the first twelve months; Bitbucket Premium is $7.25 and Azure DevOps Basic $6. A buyer who does not need the bundled capabilities sees a large gap.
03
Self-managed GitLab needs real hardware
Running GitLab yourself is one of its main attractions, but its documentation sets 8 vCPU and 16 GB of memory as the single-server baseline. Gitea's documentation calls 2 CPU cores and 1 GB of RAM enough for a small team. For a team that wants a private Git server and little else, that is an easier thing to operate.
Free and open source to self-host; self-hosted Enterprise shown at $9.50 per user per month (list $19) on a one-year commitment, published; Gitea Cloud priced separately

you self-host and want a smaller server to look after
United States · Free plan with unlimited public and private repositories; Team $4 and Enterprise from $21 per user per month for the first twelve months, published
GitHub trades GitLab's all-in-one design for the largest ecosystem of Actions, integrations and developers who already have accounts. Team is listed at $4 per user against $29 for GitLab Premium, and the free plan has no five-user cap. Self-hosting means Enterprise Server on the $21 Enterprise plan.
Switch from GitLab if ecosystem and hiring matter more to you than self-hosting.
Not disclosed by the vendor · Free and open source to self-host; self-hosted Enterprise shown at $9.50 per user per month (list $19) on a one-year commitment, published; Gitea Cloud priced separately
Gitea does the self-hosting part of GitLab with far less machinery, on modest hardware, and still includes Actions and a package registry with container support. Its automation follows GitHub Actions workflow syntax, not GitLab CI, so pipelines are rewritten. It is a lightweight Git service, not a security and planning platform.
Switch from GitLab if you self-host and want a smaller server to look after.
Germany · Free and open source under GPL v3 or later; no paid edition
Forgejo is the community-governed hard fork of Gitea, backed by the non-profit Codeberg e.V. Where GitLab is a vendor with an open source core and paid tiers above it, Forgejo ships free software only, under GPL v3 or later, with no paid edition.
Switch from GitLab if you want self-hosted software with no vendor behind it.
United States · Basic plan $6 per user per month after 5 free users; Basic + Test Plans $52 per user per month, published
Azure DevOps is the other bundle in this category: repos, boards, pipelines, test plans and artifact feeds, with five free users and $6 per user on Basic. It fits Azure and .NET teams, feels bolted on elsewhere, and is reported as more cluttered than GitLab.
Switch from GitLab if you want a bundled platform and already build on Microsoft.
Australia · Free up to 5 users; Standard $3.65 per user per month; Premium $7.25 per user per month, published
Bitbucket covers code, built-in pipelines and, on paid plans, a container registry, and ties code to Jira work items, leaving planning to the Atlassian suite. Standard is $3.65 and Premium $7.25 per user, well under GitLab's tiers. Outside Atlassian its pull request interface and marketplace feel thin.
Switch from GitLab if planning already happens in Jira.
Denmark · Free for up to 5 full members; Team plan €15 per month for up to 10 full members, published, excl. VAT
Gitoro's pipelines use GitLab-compatible CI/CD syntax, the only alternative on this list to say so, which may spare a rewrite. It is hosted only, with no self-hosted edition, from a young Danish vendor, at 15 euros per month for up to 10 full members.
Switch from GitLab if you want to keep GitLab-style pipeline files on a small hosted plan.
Codeberg offers git hosting, issues, a package registry and CI at no cost, run by a German non-profit association. Unlike GitLab's free tier it takes only free and open source projects, so proprietary code has to live somewhere else.
Switch from GitLab if the repositories you are moving are open source.
GitLab is the one to keep when you use the breadth. Repositories, pipelines, a container registry, security scanning and planning sit under a single permission model, with basic scanners on every tier, and GitLab Self-Managed lets you run all of it on your own infrastructure. Replacing it usually means buying several tools and joining them up.

What moving off GitLab involves
01
Pipelines are the bulk of the work
Repositories transfer to any Git host. The CI configuration does not: GitHub and Gitea use Actions-style workflows, so each GitLab pipeline is written again. Gitoro states GitLab-compatible syntax, which is worth testing with a real pipeline before you count on it.
02
Everything that was bundled needs a new home
Leaving GitLab means finding separate answers for the container registry, security scanning and issue planning if you relied on them. Write down which of those you actually use. For some teams the honest list is short, and that is the justification for moving.
03
One permission model becomes several
A single permission model covered code, pipelines and planning. After the move, access is managed in each replacement tool separately. Decide who owns that, and check that offboarding removes a person everywhere, not only from the code host.

Questions about replacing GitLab
5 answers
What is a lighter alternative to GitLab for self-hosting?
Gitea, whose documentation calls 2 CPU cores and 1 GB of RAM enough for a small team, against GitLab's baseline of 8 vCPU and 16 GB. Forgejo, its community-governed hard fork, is the other option. Both are free and open source to self-host.
Is GitHub cheaper than GitLab?
On published per-user prices, yes: GitHub Team is $4 per user per month and Enterprise $21 for the first twelve months, against $29 for GitLab Premium, billed annually, and a custom quote for Ultimate.
Both have free tiers. GitLab's price includes capabilities GitHub leaves to its ecosystem.
Can I reuse GitLab CI pipelines on another platform?
Only Gitoro on this list describes its CI/CD syntax as GitLab-compatible. GitHub, Gitea and Forgejo use Actions-style workflows, and Bitbucket has its own Pipelines, so GitLab pipelines have to be written again for those hosts.
Which GitLab alternative includes project planning?
Azure DevOps includes boards alongside repos and pipelines. Bitbucket relies on Jira, which works if you already pay for the Atlassian suite. Gitea's open source edition lists issue tracking and project management. Codeberg provides issues, but only for open source projects.
Which GitLab alternative has a bigger free plan?
GitHub's. GitLab.com Free allows five users per private top-level group and 400 compute minutes a month. GitHub Free lists unlimited private repositories and 2,000 Actions minutes with no stated user cap. Bitbucket Free also stops at five users, with 50 build minutes a month.
