Wistia alternatives: 7 video hosting tools compared

Wistia is bought by marketing teams, and it is mostly marketing teams that reconsider it: when more colleagues need logins, when viewing volumes climb, or when the step between plans looks steep. Some switch to a general-purpose host with lower entry prices, others hand video to engineering and a usage-billed service.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Why buyers look past Wistia

  1. 01

    More users, more cost

Wistia's Business plan includes 3 users, and each additional user is listed at $25 a month on top of the base price. A marketing team that starts small and then brings in sales, product or regional colleagues finds the subscription rising with headcount even if the video library hardly changes.

  2. 02

Allowances built for marketing, not mass streaming

Business includes 250 GB of storage and 1 TB of bandwidth a month; the free plan has 25 GB and 200 GB. Storage beyond the plan can be prepaid or paid by usage. Companies whose video is watched at scale, inside an application or across a large audience, often compare this with services that publish per-GB or per-minute rates.

  3. 03

The integrations sit on the expensive plan

The published range runs from a free plan to Business at $79 and Business + Signals at $329 a month, billed annually. CTAs and forms come with Business, but the HubSpot, Marketo and Pardot connections, lead scoring and revenue attribution require Signals. A team that wants its marketing platform connected faces a large jump, which prompts a look elsewhere.

What each one does differently

Vimeo

United States · Free plan; Starter from $12, Standard from $25, Advanced from $75 per seat per month, billed annually, published

A general-purpose host with review and approval tools from its $12 Starter plan, lead capture forms and CTAs from Standard at $25, and marketing integrations including HubSpot from Advanced at $75, all per seat and billed annually. It has no equivalent of Wistia's lead scoring and revenue attribution.

Switch from Wistia if you need hosting, review and simple lead capture more than marketing attribution.

Bunny Stream

Slovenia · Storage from $0.01 per GB; delivery from $0.005 per GB; encoding free, published

Charges per GB stored and delivered with free encoding, which is the usage pricing Wistia does not offer. It has no lead-capture or monetisation tooling, so the marketing layer would have to come from elsewhere.

Switch from Wistia if delivery volume drives your cost and engineers can handle the rest.

Mux

United States · Storage from $0.003 per minute per month; delivery from $0.001 per minute after 100,000 free minutes, published

A developer API billed per minute, with 100,000 free delivery minutes monthly. Where Wistia gives marketers a dashboard with forms and CTAs, Mux includes no marketing layer at all.

Switch from Wistia if video is moving into your product and developers will own it.

Mux, #5 of 13 in our video hosting software ranking →

Cloudflare Stream

United States · $5 per month per 1,000 minutes stored; $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered, published

Prices storage and delivery per thousand minutes on Cloudflare's network, with signed URLs and domain restrictions. It is infrastructure with no lead-capture layer and no marketing integrations, the two things Wistia is built on.

Switch from Wistia if you want predictable usage rates and access control, not marketing features.

Cloudflare Stream, #6 of 13 in our video hosting software ranking →

api.video

France · Hosting from $0.00285 per minute stored; delivery from $0.0017 per minute delivered, published

Per-minute hosting and delivery with free unlimited encoding and an upload API, from a French company. It targets teams embedding video in their own product, where Wistia targets marketers; custom domains cost extra.

Switch from Wistia if you are building video features and want an API with published rates.

api.video, #4 of 13 in our video hosting software ranking →

Dacast

United States · Starter $39 per month; Event $63 per month; Scale $165 per month, billed annually, published

Built for live streaming and paid video, with a paywall and advertising support included. Its Starter plan is cheaper than Wistia's Business plan, but plans have a three-month minimum and overage charges.

Switch from Wistia if you charge viewers for live events or subscriptions.

Dacast, #8 of 13 in our video hosting software ranking →

Kaltura

United States · Quoted per organisation

An enterprise platform with roots in higher education, offering LMS integrations and analytics for large deployments. Wistia publishes its prices; Kaltura quotes every plan per organisation after a demo.

Switch from Wistia if you need video across a university or a large enterprise, not a marketing team.

When Wistia is still the right choice

Wistia is the right host when video is a marketing instrument. Collections, playlists, CTAs and forms come with Business, and Business + Signals adds HubSpot, Marketo and Pardot connections, lead scoring and revenue attribution. There is a free plan and frame-level feedback is built in. The usage-billed alternatives are infrastructure without any of this. A small marketing team that relies on those features would have to rebuild them.

05

What moving off Wistia involves

  1. 01

Lead capture stops when the player changes

Forms and CTAs inside Wistia's player feed your marketing platform. On a host without that layer, such as Mux or Cloudflare Stream, those leads need another route, for example a form on the page itself. Settle this before moving a single file.

  2. 02

    Reconnect the marketing platform

On Business + Signals, Wistia passes viewing and lead data to HubSpot, Marketo or Pardot and feeds lead scoring. Check what the marketing team does with that data today, and whether the replacement can supply it. Vimeo lists marketing integrations on its Advanced plan; the infrastructure services leave that work to you.

  3. 03

Recreate collections and swap the players

Collections and playlists are Wistia structures and will need setting up again. Embedded players across landing pages and campaigns must also be swapped, so an inventory of where videos appear is the most useful preparation.

Questions about replacing Wistia

5 answers
What is a cheaper alternative to Wistia?

Vimeo's published plans start at $12 per seat per month for Starter and $25 for Standard, billed annually, against $79 for Wistia's Business plan with 3 users. Usage-billed services such as Bunny Stream and Mux can cost less still, without marketing features.

Does any Wistia alternative include lead capture?

Yes, Vimeo does. Its Standard plan lists lead capture with custom forms and CTAs, and Advanced adds integrations with HubSpot, Mailchimp and similar tools.

Cloudflare Stream, Mux and Bunny Stream are infrastructure without a marketing layer, so forms would have to live on the page around the player.

Is Vimeo a good replacement for Wistia?

It is if review workflows, storage and price matter more than attribution. Vimeo is the most complete general-purpose host in our ranking, priced per seat, with lead capture from Standard.

It does not offer the lead scoring and pipeline reporting that Wistia sells in Business + Signals.

Which Wistia alternative suits high-volume streaming?

Bunny Stream bills per GB, while Mux, api.video and Cloudflare Stream bill per minute, all with published rates. Wistia's Business plan includes 1 TB of bandwidth a month, so these are the usual comparisons once viewing volume becomes the main cost.

How much does an extra Wistia user cost?

Wistia's pricing page lists 3 users on Business and Business + Signals, with each additional user at $25 a month.

The free plan is limited to a single user, and Enterprise user counts are agreed individually. Reviewers who only comment through a shared link do not need an account.
