Forgejo exists because Gitea’s commercial ownership made some maintainers uneasy, so it forked the code under Codeberg e.V., a democratic non-profit. Functionally it is close to Gitea today, and the two projects still diverge feature by feature, so check the current release notes before assuming exact parity.

Shortlisting version control software on a feature matrix. Every vendor in this category ticks every box, so the matrix tells you nothing and costs a week.
Testing with clean data. Import the messy export from the system you are replacing, because that is what your first week of version control software will actually look like.
Letting the vendor run the demo. Ask for a version control tool sandbox and do your own three most common tasks in it, timed.
