What is IBM QRadar?

IBM QRadar SIEM is a security information and event management product from IBM. It collects log events and network flow data from servers, network devices and security tools, correlates them, and raises offences, which are groups of related alerts that analysts investigate. IBM positions it for security operations centres that need central visibility, real-time threat detection and compliance reporting.

The product can be deployed on premises as hardware or virtual appliances, and IBM also sells the licence as software or as a managed service, with IBM X-Force Threat Management Services as the managed option. Detection content includes native support for thousands of Sigma rules from the open source community. IBM also sells QRadar Network Detection and Response as a related product that analyses network activity. The pages read do not describe a free edition, and prices are not shown as amounts; the licence is built around ingestion rate or server count.

03

IBM QRadar key features

  • Events and flows. QRadar correlates log events with network flow records. The EPS and FPM licence model counts events per second and flows per minute, which ties the licence directly to the volume of data the appliance processes.
  • Sigma rule support. IBM says analysts can import thousands of validated Sigma rules from the open source community directly, so new detections arrive as threats change without writing each rule from scratch.
  • Insider threat analytics. The product page describes user behaviour analytics to find anomalous behaviour, risky users and insider threats. IBM presents this as part of unified security intelligence and analytics rather than a separate product.
  • Case work and prioritisation. IBM says QRadar reduces repetitive tasks such as case creation and risk prioritisation. Its claims on false positives and investigation time come from a Forrester study commissioned by IBM, modelled on a composite organisation.
  • Network detection and response. QRadar NDR is a related product that analyses network activity in real time, profiles assets, flags lateral movement and slow data exfiltration, and lets staff query historical network activity.
  • Deployment and licensing options. Deployments include hardware appliances, virtual appliances and managed service. On-premises customers pick subscription or perpetual licences, and Subscription and Support covers new versions, fixes and 24x7x365 technical support.
04

Who IBM QRadar suits

  • A bank that must keep security data in its own data centre. The team runs QRadar on virtual or hardware appliances inside its network. It licenses by managed virtual servers or by events and flows, and keeps retention under its own control instead of sending telemetry to a cloud service.
  • A mid-size SOC with a small analyst team. The team uses Sigma rules and prebuilt integrations to cover common sources quickly. IBM X-Force Threat Management Services can monitor on the team's behalf when staff are unavailable, at a price agreed with IBM.
  • A manufacturer with networks to monitor. Security staff combine log events with flow data to see device behaviour on the network. QRadar NDR adds asset profiling and historical network queries for finding lateral movement between devices.
05

Getting started with IBM QRadar

IBM routes new buyers to a free one-to-one demo with its experts and a custom demonstration request. The vendor offers free QRadar SIEM training through its Security Learning Academy and a community site.

Installation guidance is in the IBM documentation, which covers adding a Device Support Module for each log source type, plus QRadar Risk Manager and Vulnerability Manager. Appliance purchase, sizing by events per second or managed servers, and licence quotes come through IBM or partners. The pages read give no typical deployment time.

06

Verdict: IBM QRadar

QRadar SIEM is licensed by events per second and flows per minute, or by managed virtual servers, and on-premises deployments can take subscription or perpetual licences. That suits teams that must keep data in house.

The pricing page lists models, not amounts, and the options it names are software, hardware and virtual appliances and a managed service. IBM's scale does not shorten the setup or the exit.

The SIEM software list places IBM QRadar 12 of 12: Splunk Enterprise Security is the product just above it, and it closes the list. From place 4 the established names follow in their ranked order; we publish no numeric score.

By headquarters, 10 of the 12 are established in North America, as IBM QRadar is in the United States.

07

Strengths and limits of IBM QRadar

IBM QRadar: strengths
  • QRadar SIEM is licensed by events per second and flows per minute, or by managed virtual servers, and on-premises deployments can take subscription or perpetual licences.
  • Appliance or software is among the traits we single out for it.
  • Catalogue tag: Events per second.
  • Marked in our records as sigma rules.
  • Suits: Regulated organisations that want a SIEM they run in their own data centre.
Where IBM QRadar costs you
  • Under the usage model you pay for event and flow rates, so a spike in log volume means a larger licence.
  • Less suited to: Teams wanting a self-serve cloud SIEM with published pricing.
  • The pricing page gives no amounts, and the options it names are appliances, software and a managed service.
08

IBM QRadar pros and cons in practice

Works well
  • An on-premises option lets regulated organisations keep log data inside their own data centre.
  • Two licence metrics, events and flows or managed servers, give buyers a choice between volume-based and server-based cost.
  • Native Sigma rule import gives access to community detections without custom authoring.
  • Subscription and Support includes 24x7x365 technical support and new software versions.
Gets in the way
  • No amounts are printed anywhere on the pricing page, so budgets depend on a quote from IBM or a partner.
  • Appliance deployment means the customer sizes, installs and maintains the infrastructure, unlike a hosted service.
  • The headline results come from a Forrester study that IBM commissioned, based on a composite organisation, so they may not match your environment.
  • Each log source type needs a Device Support Module, which adds configuration work during rollout.

IBM QRadar in practice

QRadar offers user behaviour analytics, network threat analytics through its NDR product and native support for community Sigma rules, with about 700 prebuilt integrations and partner extensions.

The vendor is IBM Corporation in Armonk, New York, and its pages document no export format, so leaving is a migration project.

10

IBM QRadar pricing

Pricing as recorded: Licensed by events and flows or by managed servers; subscription or perpetual; quoted by sales; on-premises.

The pricing page names two usage models and no amounts. The usage model is based on events per second and flows per minute, available for hardware and virtual appliances. The enterprise model is based on managed virtual servers, counting physical, virtual and cloud servers, and lets you ingest network behaviour and unlimited log events. On-premises offerings come as subscription or perpetual licences. Subscription and Support is included initially and renewed annually. The page says prices shown are indicative, vary by country and exclude taxes, but it lists no figures, so a quote is needed.

IBM QRadar: data and security

IBM describes QRadar SIEM as deployable on premises as hardware or virtual appliances for organisations that want detailed control over their infrastructure. Where data is stored therefore depends on where the customer installs it. The pages read do not list certifications, encryption methods or data export formats, so they are not stated here. The product page says it helps show evidence of compliance for audits.
