What is Google Security Operations?

Google Security Operations, shortened to Google SecOps by Google Cloud, is a cloud service that combines a SIEM, a SOAR and threat intelligence. Security teams send logs and telemetry to it, and the service normalises them into a Unified Data Model, runs detection rules against them, and gives analysts search, case management and playbooks to respond. Google describes it as built on top of Google infrastructure for enterprises that need to retain and search large amounts of security data.

Detection comes from curated rules that Google researchers maintain, from custom rules written in the YARA-L language, and from Gemini features that search data and draft rules in plain language. The service is sold in Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus packages based on ingestion, with one year of telemetry retention included. It is a hosted product only; Google does not describe an on-premises edition on the pages read.

03

Google Security Operations key features

  • Curated detections. Google says its threat researchers develop and continuously maintain detection rules for on-premises and cloud threats. Enterprise adds Google curated detections, and Enterprise Plus adds emerging-threat detections based on Mandiant incident response research.
  • YARA-L rules. Teams write custom detections in YARA-L. Rule capacity depends on the package: 1,000 single-event and 75 multi-event rules in Standard, 2,000 and 125 in Enterprise, and 3,500 and 200 in Enterprise Plus.
  • Gemini assistance. Gemini in security operations offers natural-language search, an investigation chat assistant, case summaries, recommended response actions, and help creating detections and playbooks. The pricing page lists it from the Enterprise package.
  • Built-in SOAR. Playbooks automate response steps and orchestrate more than 300 tools, including EDR and identity systems. An auto-documenting case wall records the work, and the platform reports analyst productivity and mean time to respond.
  • Data pipeline management. Telemetry can be routed, filtered, redacted and transformed before it is stored. Standard and Enterprise include limited filtering. Enterprise Plus adds advanced filtering, redaction, routing to Google and 12 months of routing to another destination for SIEM migrations.
  • Applied threat intelligence. Enterprise Plus gives access to Google Threat Intelligence, covering Mandiant, VirusTotal and Google sources, with machine-learning prioritisation of indicator matches and coverage of adversary techniques. Standard asks customers to bring their own feeds.
  • Retention and export. Google retains 12 months of data by default and can extend this to five years in the purchase order. Enterprise Plus includes free storage for BigQuery exports of SecOps data up to the retention period.
04

Who Google Security Operations suits

  • A security team replacing an ageing on-premises SIEM. The team ingests existing log sources through parsers, forwarders or the Bindplane agent. The 700 plus parsers and the migration routing in Enterprise Plus let it run old and new platforms side by side before switching.
  • A SOC that already uses Google Cloud. Cloud and workspace telemetry arrives in the same Google environment as the SIEM. Analysts use curated detections for cloud threats and run response playbooks from the case view without a separate SOAR licence.
  • A threat hunting team at a large enterprise. Hunters query retained telemetry for up to five years of history. They use the enriched open source intelligence in Enterprise for retro-hunts on new indicators, and write YARA-L rules for behaviours specific to their environment.
05

Getting started with Google Security Operations

Pricing is not self-serve, so the route in is Google Cloud sales or a partner. The vendor points new buyers to tutorials, quickstarts and labs, a guide for rethinking an existing SecOps platform, and a migration guide from other SIEMs.

Data enters through forwarders, parsers, OpenTelemetry collectors, connectors and webhooks, and the documentation covers deploying the Bindplane agent for collection. The legacy Ingestion API is deprecated and will be discontinued on 20 July 2027, so new integrations should use the Chronicle API. The pages read give no typical time to first detection.

06

Our verdict on Google Security Operations

Google Security Operations is sold in Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus packages based on ingestion, each with SIEM and SOAR and one year of telemetry retention at no extra cost.

Rule capacity rises by package, from 1,000 single-event rules in Standard to 3,500 in Enterprise Plus, and UEBA starts at Enterprise. Prices come only from sales, so budgeting needs a sizing conversation first.

Google Security Operations is entry #10 of 12 in the SIEM software list: the products next to it are Microsoft Sentinel above and Splunk Enterprise Security below. After the challenger places, Google Security Operations is one of the established names, ranked in order and without a score.

By headquarters, 10 of the 12 are established in North America, as Google Security Operations is in the United States.

07

The case for and against Google Security Operations

Where Google Security Operations wins
  • Google Security Operations is sold in Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus packages based on ingestion, each with SIEM and SOAR and one year of telemetry retention at no extra cost.
  • Best for: Organisations wanting SIEM and SOAR in one ingestion-priced package with long retention.
  • Ingestion-based, one of the three traits the catalogue lists for Google Security Operations.
  • Google Security Operations is tagged SOAR included in our records.
  • 12 months hot data is among the traits we single out for it.
Where Google Security Operations does not
  • Prices are available only through sales, and data pipeline management is limited in Standard and Enterprise.
  • Rule capacity is capped per package, so growth in detections can force a move to a dearer package.
  • Look elsewhere if you are Teams that need to compare published prices before contacting sales.
08

Google Security Operations pros and cons in practice

Works well
  • One package includes SIEM, SOAR and a year of retention, so a team does not buy and connect separate products.
  • Rule capacity limits per package are printed, which makes it clear when Standard will be outgrown.
  • Retention can be extended to five years through the purchase order, which suits long audit requirements.
  • Gemini assistance covers search, case summaries and rule drafting inside the same console.
Gets in the way
  • No amounts are published for any package, so the cost cannot be estimated before a sales conversation.
  • Threat intelligence from Mandiant and VirusTotal is tied to Enterprise Plus, the highest package.
  • Log data cannot be deleted manually, so privacy removals require a support case.
  • The legacy Ingestion API is being discontinued in July 2027, which forces older integrations to migrate to the Chronicle API.
09

Google Security Operations in practice

Standard includes the core SIEM and SOAR functions with 12 months of hot retention, more than 700 parsers, over 300 SOAR integrations and one environment with a remote agent.

Enterprise lifts that to unlimited environments and adds UEBA and a Gemini investigation assistant.

Enterprise Plus adds applied threat intelligence, BigQuery storage for exports up to your retention period and 12 months of routing to another destination for SIEM migrations, the clearest exit clause in this list.

Google Security Operations: data and security

Google describes the service as a cloud service built on Google infrastructure that lets enterprises privately retain and search security telemetry. Data is kept for 12 months by default and up to five years if purchased.

Customers cannot delete log data manually and must open a support case for removals. Role-based access control and audit logging are documented. Specific certifications and data residency boundaries sit on a separate compliance page that was not read, so they are not listed here.
