Seafile vs Tresorit

Seafile is file sync software you can host on your own server or rent, with prices printed on its page. Tresorit is a hosted, end-to-end encrypted service from Switzerland whose pricing selector showed no amounts when we read it. The choice is control of your own server against encryption done on the device.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    What you can budget today

Seafile prints its numbers: Pro on-premises is free for 3 users and $48 per user per year for 10 to 249 users, and Plus Cloud Team is $8 per user per month from 3 users. Tresorit's pricing selector showed no prices or limits, so a quote comes first.

    Edge: Seafile

  2. 02

    Encryption on the device

Tresorit says files are encrypted on the device before upload, zero-knowledge, citing AES-256 and RSA-4096. Seafile lists encryption among its features, but nothing on the pages we read describes a zero-knowledge design. For strict confidentiality duties, Tresorit states more.

    Edge: Tresorit

  3. 03

    Running it yourself or not

Seafile offers self-hosting, with a Community Edition under GPL v2 and server core under AGPLv3, or hosted Plus Cloud. Upkeep of self-hosting is yours, and paid support for Pro is a separate $5,000 yearly plan. Tresorit is cloud-hosted only, with EU-only residency or 12 locations.

    Edge: Seafile

  4. 04

    Admin controls for regulated teams

Tresorit lists SSO and user sync with Azure AD, Okta or Google, audit logs, remote wipe, and support for GDPR, HIPAA, NIS2 and FINRA. Seafile lists audit logs, file history recovery and password-protected share links, plus SeaDoc and kanban views. Tresorit leans to compliance, Seafile to collaboration.

    Edge: Tresorit

03

When neither fits

If you want a free personal hosted drive, Seafile has no single-user plan and Tresorit shows no stated limits. Filen or Nextcloud may suit better.
