Deel vs Gusto

Deel pays contractors and employs people through an employer of record in a hundred-plus countries where you have no entity. Gusto runs payroll for small teams inside the United States, across all fifty states, with benefits and filing included. They solve different problems: global hiring without entities on one side, domestic US payroll on the other.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

    Where your people are

Gusto is US-only in substance, with compliance across all fifty states handled; abroad it offers contractor payments, not payroll. Deel covers contractors and employer-of-record employment in more than a hundred countries. The location of your staff settles this before any feature does.

    Depends on the buyer

  2. 02

    Employing staff abroad

Deel is the fastest way in our data to pay someone in a country where you have no entity, with contracts and tax forms handled. Gusto cannot employ staff abroad at all in practice, and an employer with people outside the United States needs a second provider regardless.

    Edge: Deel

  3. 03

    Domestic US payroll experience

Gusto set the standard for painless US payroll: onboarding, filing, benefits and time off in one flow, with support that answers. Deel is marked as wrong for a single-country employer with a local provider, and its owned payroll covers fewer countries than the marketing implies. For US staff, Gusto.

    Edge: Gusto

  4. 04

    What the fees cover

Deel charges per contractor or per employee per month, and per-worker fees add up at scale; employer-of-record pricing also carries liabilities payroll pricing does not. Gusto charges a base fee plus per employee, tagged as clear pricing. Gusto's bill is easier to predict, for a narrower job.

    Edge: Gusto

03

When neither fits

A company running its own payroll in France, Spain, Germany or the UK is served by neither; PayFit is built for that. And if owned local entities matter more than breadth of countries, Remote is the employer of record to compare.

Deel or Gusto: questions

3 answers
Do I need both Deel and Gusto?

Possibly. Gusto handles US employees but only pays contractors abroad, and our data says an employer with overseas staff needs a second provider regardless. Deel covers that overseas part. Decide which system is the source of truth for salaries if you run both.

Are Deel and Gusto prices comparable?

No. Gusto's base fee plus per-employee rate buys payroll software. Deel's per-worker fee buys contractor management or employer-of-record employment, with different liabilities. Comparing those rates directly is one of the common mistakes in this market.

Can I pay international contractors with Deel or Gusto?

Both can. Gusto's international feature is contractor payments, and contractor payments are one of Deel's core products, alongside compliance documents. The difference appears when a contractor should really be an employee: Deel offers an employer of record, Gusto does not.
