Buyers who look beyond Mimecast are usually weighing a quote that bundles more than they use, a gateway that sits in the mail path, or a London-headquartered supplier when their compliance team wants a continental one. They move to an API-only layer, to a gateway built and hosted inside the EU, or to a suite from a larger security vendor.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Mimecast in our email security software ranking are Proofpoint, Abnormal AI and Barracuda. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Proofpoint if you want a comparable enterprise suite and are not leaving over the platform scope. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Email Security Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Mimecast.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say
about a product. How that works.
Mimecast now describes itself as a human-risk platform covering email, collaboration, data and AI agents, and its product menu runs from insider-risk tooling to an email archive. Pricing sits behind a Get a Quote button. A team that only wants inbound filtering ends up reading a long product list to find the part it is buying.
02
Gateway or API is a real choice now
Mimecast offers MX-based deployment, where all incoming mail routes through its gateway first, and API-based deployment with no MX change. Several rivals only do the API model, and a few only do the gateway. If you are leaving because of the mail-flow change or the opposite, the deployment model narrows the list faster than any feature does.
03
UK jurisdiction is not EU jurisdiction
Mimecast states it was founded in 2003 and is headquartered in London. Since the UK left the EU, a procurement team with an EU-only data policy may need a legal opinion on that, where a supplier headquartered in Germany, Italy, France or Austria answers the question by its address.

What each one does differently
1
Proofpoint
United States · Quoted per organization by user licences and contract term; not published
The closest like-for-like swap for an enterprise Mimecast estate. Core Email Protection deploys via API or inline and covers Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, with a wider catalogue around it for DLP, archiving and awareness training. It is a US company, pricing is by demo, and the same breadth that suits large estates is more than a small team needs.
Switch from Mimecast if you want a comparable enterprise suite and are not leaving over the platform scope.
United States · Quoted on request; no published pricing
Works on behavioural baselines for each employee and vendor instead of signatures, and connects by API to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, with a stated deployment time of 60 seconds and no MX change. It positions itself as a replacement for the gateway. It has no continuity or archive heritage, and pricing starts with a demo.
Switch from Mimecast if payload-less fraud such as vendor invoice scams is the threat you are losing to.
United States · Quoted on request; no published pricing
API-first, with no MX change, and sold with archiving, Microsoft 365 backup and awareness training attached to the email product. The vendor reports more than 80,000 organisations. Management runs through the BarracudaONE console, which pays off only if you also buy other Barracuda lines. The company is American.
Switch from Mimecast if you want filtering, backup and archive from one reseller-friendly vendor.
Germany · Quoted on request across four 365 Total Protection plans; no published pricing; free trial offered
Sells Microsoft 365 security in four 365 Total Protection plans, with a free trial and a channel of over 12,000 partners. The site is now branded Hornetsecurity by Proofpoint, so choosing it for European independence would be a mistake. Fits managed service providers well; the plans are priced by the vendor or partner, not shown.
Switch from Mimecast if an MSP already manages your Microsoft 365 tenant and wants one stack.
Italy · Quoted per mailbox on request; 30-day free trial offered
Keeps analysis local: the vendor says its semantic AI processes mail with no data exposure and that attachment sandboxing and URL checks run inside the customer environment. Offers a 30-day free trial and sells separate archive, DMARC and phishing-simulation products. The parent is Italian (LibraCyber S.p.A., Lecco), with UK and US entities.
Switch from Mimecast if you want filtering that does not send message content to a third-party cloud.
Germany · Quoted on request; not published; 30-day trial of Cloud or Server
A secure email gateway from Net at Work GmbH in Paderborn, offered as NoSpamProxy Cloud or NoSpamProxy Server, so the same product can run in the vendor cloud or on your own infrastructure. A 30-day free trial is advertised and prices are by request. Encryption and large-file sending are core parts, not add-ons.
Switch from Mimecast if German-hosted or self-hosted filtering with built-in encryption matters.
A gateway or a Microsoft 365 API (Google Workspace is listed as planned), with sandboxing, post-delivery checks and continuity. Retarus says it is headquartered in the EU, runs its AI components inside the EU and has operated since 1992. It also sells fax, SMS and EDI, so email security is one line of a messaging company.
Switch from Mimecast if you want an EU-headquartered gateway and may add messaging services from the same supplier.
A Marseille publisher that integrates natively with Microsoft 365 and analyses links when they are clicked. It states 26,000 protected organisations and sells training, password management and a security dashboard next to the filter. Information is demo-led. Document the Google Workspace position with the vendor, since only Microsoft 365 is named.
Switch from Mimecast if a smaller French-speaking organisation wants filtering plus awareness training in one product.
Austria · Quoted on request; not published; free test and a public demo interface
IKARUS mail.security is offered with an ATP option and an S/MIME service, and the company says it operates its own data centre in Vienna. It is an Austrian security firm best known for its malware engine, with fewer public references than the larger names here, and pricing is not published.
Switch from Mimecast if you want a small Austrian supplier with its own data centre and a direct support line.
Ireland · Quoted on request; not published; free trial on request
SpamTitan from TitanHQ (a trading name of Copperfasten Technologies, registered in Ireland, now part of CyberSentriq) is a filter with dual antivirus, greylisting and recipient verification, aimed at MSPs and sold in bundles. It adds a layer to Microsoft 365. Behavioural fraud detection is a separate product, PhishTitan.
Switch from Mimecast if you need an inexpensive, plain spam and malware filter in front of Microsoft 365.
United States · Quoted per user on 1, 3 or 5-year terms; no published pricing; free trial of Threat Defense
Secure Email Threat Defense combines an inline gateway and API deployment in one console. Pricing is per user on 1, 3 or 5-year terms, a free trial covers Microsoft 365, and Cisco states FedRAMP Class D (High) certification. Its value is greatest if you already run Cisco security products. US company.
Switch from Mimecast if you hold a Cisco enterprise agreement or need FedRAMP High certification.
Mimecast stays the right answer when the estate is large, mixed and regulated, and the buyer wants one supplier for gateway filtering, continuity, archiving and awareness. It deploys both as a gateway and via API, so the mail-flow argument for leaving is weaker than it looks. If those extra modules are in use and the quote has been negotiated, the switching cost is real and the alternatives mostly cover fewer of them.

What moving off Mimecast involves
01
MX records and the mail path
Leaving a gateway means changing where the domain's MX records point, or adding a connector. Plan the cutover in a low-traffic window, lower the DNS time-to-live first, and keep the old route alive until queued mail has drained. API tools skip this step but need a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace permission grant.
02
Archive and continuity data stay behind
If you bought Mimecast's archive, historical mail does not follow you automatically. Ask for an export and its format before signing the new contract, and keep the old tenant long enough to meet your retention duty. Checking this is cheaper than a failed legal hold.
03
Rebuild the policies, not just the rules
Allow lists, impersonation protection and attachment policies are written in each product's own terms. Run the new filter in monitor mode alongside the old one for two weeks and compare what each catches before turning enforcement on.

Questions about replacing Mimecast
6 answers
What is the best alternative to Mimecast for a small business?
A small business is usually better served by a filter with a trial and simple deployment.
SpamTitan and NoSpamProxy offer free trials per their sites, Libraesva offers 30 days free, and Barracuda connects by API in minutes. None publish prices on the pages we checked, so request quotes from two or three.
Is there a European alternative to Mimecast?
Yes: Libraesva (Italy), NoSpamProxy and Retarus (Germany), Mailinblack (France), IKARUS (Austria) and SpamTitan (Ireland). Hornetsecurity was founded in Germany but its site is now branded Hornetsecurity by Proofpoint, so treat it as a US-group product when jurisdiction matters.
Can an API-based product replace Mimecast's gateway?
Vendors such as Abnormal, Barracuda and Mimecast itself describe API deployment with no MX change, and Abnormal markets it as a gateway replacement. Whether you keep an inline layer for continuity is a risk decision, so test it in a pilot mailbox group.
Does Mimecast publish its prices?
Not on the Advanced Email Security page we checked, which routes to a quote request. The same is true of most vendors on this list; Cisco states only that pricing is per user on 1, 3 or 5-year terms.
Which alternatives can be installed on our own servers?
NoSpamProxy offers a Server edition next to its Cloud edition. Libraesva describes local-only processing and a local sandbox, and IKARUS operates its own Vienna data centre. Confirm the exact deployment options with each vendor, as websites differ in how clearly they say it.
Does Mimecast also cover archiving and training?
Its product menu lists an Email Archive, a DMARC Analyzer and security-awareness products next to Advanced Email Security. Barracuda, Hornetsecurity, Libraesva and Mailinblack also sell archive or training modules, so compare the full bundle, not only the filter.
