HandBrake alternatives: 11 video converter tools compared

HandBrake is a volunteer-built, open source transcoder for Windows, macOS and Linux, and its home page says it is free. People still go looking for something else once the job grows past converting one file into another. HandBrake's own documentation says it cannot join clips, always re-encodes the video and cannot open DRM-protected files, and it points editing work to other software. Others want a named company behind the download, a lossless cut, or a server that converts a whole library without supervision.

Short answer: Where a category has smaller vendors worth recommending, they occupy the first three places and the big brands come below them. For HandBrake users, the top three picks from our video converter software ranking are VidCoder, Avidemux and Shutter Encoder. Pick VidCoder if you like HandBrake's engine but want a Windows-only interface with a watched folder. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Video Converter Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from HandBrake.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

HandBrake

#3 of 14 in our video converter software ranking

  • Pricing: Gratis under GPL-2.0, with no paid plans on the home page
  • Established in: Not stated by the vendor
  • Built for: Anyone who wants an auditable converter on all three desktop systems
  • Not for: Teams needing contracted support or documented format lists
01

Why buyers look past HandBrake

  1. 01

It always re-encodes and never joins clips

The HandBrake documentation states that video is always converted, so it cannot pass a stream through untouched, and that it cannot combine several clips into one file. Anyone who only wants to trim a recording, stitch two takes together or change a container without quality loss therefore needs a second tool, and the docs send editing tasks to separate editing software.

  2. 02

Protected sources stay out of reach

The documentation says HandBrake does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and does not work with video files that use DRM, including many commercial discs and content from major online services. It adds that disc-copying tools such as MakeMKV can produce files HandBrake opens, with no affiliation. People with mixed archives end up with a chain of utilities rather than one converter.

  3. 03

    Nobody to hold accountable

The home page credits only The HandBrake Team, volunteers, and the pages we read show no company, imprint or country. A procurement or compliance department that needs a supplier, a support contract or a named legal entity has nothing to sign, and the site published no licence name on the pages we read, so that has to be confirmed in the source repository.

What each one does differently

VidCoder

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

VidCoder is an open source front end for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 that uses HandBrake as its encoding engine, so output quality stays familiar. It reads DVD and Blu-ray sources, writes MP4 or MKV in AV1, H.265, H.264 and VP9, supports NVENC, Intel QuickSync and AMD VCE, and adds a folder watcher. Disc encryption is not removed, and no developer country appears.

Switch from HandBrake if you like HandBrake's engine but want a Windows-only interface with a watched folder.

Avidemux

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

Avidemux is a GPL video editor for Linux, BSD, macOS and Windows that cuts, filters and encodes, keeps projects, queues batch jobs and can be scripted. That covers the trimming and joining that HandBrake leaves to other software. Its page lists 2.8.1 from 23 September 2022 as the newest release, and it names its author, Mean, but no organisation or country.

Switch from HandBrake if you need to cut or join clips as well as convert them.

Shutter Encoder

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Shutter Encoder wraps FFmpeg for editing-ready output: ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR, H.264, H.265, H.266, VP9, AV1 and FFV1 on Windows, macOS and Linux, with acceleration listed for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and Apple hardware. The developer, Paul Pacifico, is named and funded by donations. The site names no company, imprint, address, country or licence for the application itself.

Switch from HandBrake if you deliver files to editors and need ProRes or DNx rather than web codecs.

XMedia Recode

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

XMedia Recode is a Windows-only converter by a named developer, Sebastian Dörfler, currently at version 3.6.4.1, and its download page lists no price. It outputs H.264, HEVC, SVT-AV1, MKV, MP4 and WebM with AMD, NVIDIA or Intel acceleration, queues batches, and cuts, rotates and scales. Copy-protected discs are unsupported, and the linked Impressum showed no content when we read it.

Switch from HandBrake if you run Windows only and want a plain converter with simple cutting built in.

VideoProc Converter

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

VideoProc Converter comes from Digiarty Software, Inc., which its footer says was established in 2006. Its distinguishing function is a lossless Auto Copy mode, which answers HandBrake's always-re-encode rule, alongside conversion from 370+ input codecs to 420+ outputs. A downloader, screen recorder and AI tools come bundled. Amounts, billing basis, free-version limits and country were not visible on its pages.

Switch from HandBrake if you want to remux or trim without re-encoding and accept a commercial bundle.

Adapter

United States · Published

Adapter is freeware from Macroplant LLC, whose page gives a Boston, MA address, so a US legal entity stands behind it. It runs on macOS (2.1.6) and Windows (2.1.2), uses an FFmpeg back-end, previews with VLC, shows output next to the original and estimates the file size before you convert. It also converts audio and images and burns in subtitles. No Linux build or hardware acceleration is named.

Switch from HandBrake if you want to see the result and expected size before committing to a conversion.

FFmpeg

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

FFmpeg is the command-line tool and set of libraries on which many converters are built, and HandBrake's own documentation says it can open whatever FFmpeg can. It runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and OpenHarmony under LGPL 2.1 or later with optional GPL parts, and release 8.1 appeared on 16 March 2026. No legal entity is named and nothing graphical comes with it.

Switch from HandBrake if you are comfortable with a terminal and want every stream option, including copying streams.

FFmpeg holds rank 6 among 14 entries in our video converter software guide →

Tdarr

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

Tdarr automates transcoding across whole libraries, using FFmpeg or HandBrake, through a central server and worker nodes on Windows, macOS, Linux or Docker. It adds library analytics, video health checks, schedules, stall detection and plugin stacks written in JavaScript. Its home page is a JavaScript-only shell, so pricing, company, country and licence name could not be read.

Switch from HandBrake if you have a large library to convert unattended across several machines.

StaxRip

Not stated by the vendor · See profile

StaxRip is a Windows encoding GUI under the MIT licence, kept in a public repository with a wiki, an issue tracker and a Discord. Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You need to cut or join clips, not only convert

Avidemux: It cuts, filters and queues jobs and can be scripted, though its newest listed release is from September 2022.

  2. 02

You want HandBrake's engine in a Windows app that watches a folder

VidCoder: It encodes AV1, H.265, H.264 and VP9 to MP4 or MKV with NVENC, QuickSync and AMD VCE hardware paths.

  3. 03

You want to copy streams without re-encoding

VideoProc Converter: It lists a lossless Auto Copy mode; prices and free limits were not shown on its pages.

  4. 04

You need ProRes or DNxHR files for an editor

Shutter Encoder: It lists ProRes, DNxHD and DNxHR, H.266, AV1 and FFV1 on Windows, macOS and Linux.

  5. 05

You have a big library to convert on several machines

Tdarr: A central server and worker nodes run FFmpeg or HandBrake jobs on Windows, macOS, Linux or Docker.

04

When HandBrake is still the right choice

HandBrake remains the sensible default when the job is converting ordinary files or ripped discs into MP4, MKV or WebM on any of three desktop systems. Its documentation lists hardware encoders for AMD, Apple, Intel and NVIDIA, a queue for many jobs and presets for device compatibility, and the version we saw, 1.11.2, is current on the home page. Nothing is charged, and a CLI exists for scripting. Leave only when a missing function, such as joining or lossless copying, actually blocks you.

05

What moving off HandBrake involves

  1. 01

    Presets will not carry over

A queue of HandBrake presets and settings cannot be assumed to import into another program. Convert the same three sample files in both tools and compare size, audio tracks, subtitles and chapters before switching a whole workflow.

  2. 02

    Check the hardware encoder path

HandBrake documents AMD VCN, Apple VideoToolbox, Intel Quick Sync and NVIDIA NVENC. Confirm that your replacement names the same encoder for your machine, as some pages we read name none, and time one long file to see whether speed holds.

Questions about replacing HandBrake

6 answers
Is HandBrake really free?

The home page says it is free, and we saw no paid plan on it. The site credits volunteers called The HandBrake Team and makes no donation request on the page we read.

Can HandBrake join two videos into one file?

The documentation says it cannot combine multiple clips into one. Avidemux, which cuts, filters and queues jobs, or FFmpeg on the command line are the usual routes for joining.

Can HandBrake convert without losing quality?

Its documentation says video is always converted, so it cannot pass a video stream through unchanged. VideoProc Converter lists a lossless Auto Copy mode, and FFmpeg is the command-line project that handles stream copying.

Does HandBrake open copy-protected discs?

No. The documentation says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and does not work with DRM-protected files.

It reads DVD and Blu-ray discs and ISO images that are not protected, and VidCoder, which uses it as an engine, also does not remove disc encryption.

Which alternative runs on Linux?

Avidemux lists Linux and BSD, Shutter Encoder lists Linux, FFmpeg lists Linux, and Tdarr runs on Linux or Docker. XMedia Recode, VidCoder and StaxRip are Windows programs.

Which alternative has a legal entity I can name?

Macroplant LLC publishes a Boston, MA address for Adapter, Digiarty Software, Inc. is named for VideoProc Converter, Anvsoft Inc for Any Video Converter and Mixbyte Inc for Freemake. The open source projects mostly name individuals or teams.
