Articulate 360 alternatives: 11 elearning authoring tools compared

Teams look past Articulate 360 for three reasons that recur: the seat price, credits that run out before the term does, and terms that give a short window to retrieve content. The alternatives below range from a Dutch browser editor to desktop tools bought once and two open source projects you host yourself.

Short answer: Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. For Articulate 360 users, the top three picks from our elearning authoring tool ranking are Easygenerator, isEazy Author and Compozer. Pick Easygenerator if you want an EU-based browser tool and a team of five or more authors. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best eLearning Authoring Tools in 2026, and each says where it differs from Articulate 360.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Why buyers look past Articulate 360

  1. 01

A seat costs $1,449 to $1,749 a year, and translation draws on credits on top

Articulate's pricing page lists Articulate 360 AI at $1,749 per seat per year for teams and $1,449 for an individual designer. Translation into 80+ languages and AI avatar video are paid from credits, sold from $250 for 50,000, and unused credits expire at the end of the term. A team that translates every course should price the credits before it compares seat prices.

  2. 02

The learner allowance in Reach is small until you pay more

Every team subscription includes the Reach LMS, with room for 300 active learners a year. Reach 360 Pro starts at $3,600 a year for 1,200 active learners. Organisations that publish to their own LMS can ignore this; those who counted on Reach for wider rollout meet a second price quickly.

  3. 03

Renewal and exit rules favour the vendor

The terms renew a subscription automatically unless you give 30 days' written notice to reduce seats, and allow Articulate to change renewal fees on 45 days' notice. At termination the right to use the services ceases at once, content is deleted at the latest six months after the term ends, and the terms we read state no export right. Keep source files outside the platform.

What each one does differently

Easygenerator

Netherlands · Published

Easygenerator is a Dutch browser editor with a published ladder. Pro is $1,499 a year for one author, ten courses and 100 learners; Team is $7,495 a year from five authors with unlimited courses, learners and reviewers, and co-authoring. After the 14-day trial an account moves to a free plan. The gap between the two paid steps is large, so count authors before you commit.

Switch from Articulate 360 if you want an EU-based browser tool and a team of five or more authors.

A free tier runs without time limit for up to three projects. It publishes SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and xAPI and offers automatic translation into more than forty languages.

Compozer

Australia · Published

Compozer, an Australian builder, charges monthly in Australian dollars: Lite A$19 for ten courses, Grow A$49 for 35, Pro A$99 for 100, each extra user A$10 to A$15. SCORM exports are unlimited from Lite upward, and review tools appear at Pro. Every user needs a subscription of their own, and the limit counts courses, not learners.

Switch from Articulate 360 if a small team makes a modest number of courses and wants the lowest monthly figure.

dominKnow ONE

Canada · On request

dominKnow ONE sells three packages, Business, Business PLUS and Enterprise, each with a quote button and no figures shown. Learners are free, SSO is an add-on on the middle package, and Business PLUS adds a private single-tenant install. Enterprise can run in the cloud or on premises behind a firewall, even air-gapped, rare among browser authoring tools.

Switch from Articulate 360 if content must stay inside your own network or be reused across many projects.

Chameleon Creator

New Zealand · Published

Chameleon Creator, from New Zealand, publishes annual prices in US dollars: Starter $2,880 for two creator seats and up to 20 projects, Professional $5,300 with unlimited projects and analytics for up to 500 learners. Every plan carries SCORM export and a stakeholder review tool, and a 14-day trial needs no card. The two-seat floor makes it awkward for one designer.

Switch from Articulate 360 if two designers share a library of templates and want review included in every plan.

Mindsmith

United States · Published

Mindsmith bills per author and starts free: 450 one-time AI credits, unlimited content, SCORM and link sharing. Professional is $39 a month and Business $65 on annual billing, adding credits, branding, live collaboration and version history. SAML SSO and xAPI sit in the custom Enterprise plan. Its drafts begin from AI generation, which suits subject experts more than seasoned Storyline builders.

Switch from Articulate 360 if you want to draft courses with AI and pay by the author, starting at nothing.

ActivePresenter

Vietnam · Published

ActivePresenter is bought once for each computer: Standard $249 for video and documents, Pro $499 for interactions, branching and SCORM 1.2, 2004 and xAPI. Major upgrades are free for a year, then 40% of full price, and each licence works on one computer at a time. It runs on Windows and macOS, and files stay local.

Switch from Articulate 360 if you want a permanent licence rather than a seat renewed each year, and one person authors.

Xerte Online Toolkits

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Xerte Online Toolkits is free, open source software from a project that belongs to the Apereo Foundation. You install it on your own web server, build in the browser and export SCORM packages or standalone zip files; xAPI tracking is available for finer detail. The site names no support contract, so the people who install it are also the people who fix it.

Switch from Articulate 360 if you have server skills in-house and want no licence bill or vendor terms.

Where Xerte Online Toolkits stands: place 12 of 15 in the elearning authoring tool ranking →

Adapt

Not stated by the vendor · Published

Adapt is a free open source project in two parts: a framework developers use to build responsive HTML5 courses, and an authoring tool that gives non-developers an editor. Output can be served from a web server or a SCORM LMS. The cost moves to hosting and developer time, and nobody offers a support contract for it.

Switch from Articulate 360 if a developer can own the stack and you want full control over the course code.

Gomo

United Kingdom · On request

Gomo is a cloud authoring tool owned by Learning Technologies Group and sold in three packages, authoring, authoring with delivery, and both with an LMS bridge. No price appears; contracts run at least twelve months, with a 21-day trial for small teams. PowerPoint import is still marked coming soon, which matters for teams that start from decks.

Switch from Articulate 360 if you need hosted delivery and a vendor quote for a larger team, and do not start from PowerPoint.

iSpring Suite

United States · Published

iSpring Suite is priced per author per year in euros: €970 for the Suite, €1,290 with AI, €720 for Cloud AI, with a 14-day trial. Courses are built inside PowerPoint, so existing decks become the source files. Even the AI edition lands below an Articulate 360 team seat at the dollar prices we read, though currencies differ.

Switch from Articulate 360 if your designers already work in PowerPoint and want a lower annual figure per author.

Which alternative for which situation

  1. 01

You want a European vendor and a browser editor

Easygenerator: It is Dutch, and Team is $7,495 a year from five authors with unlimited courses, learners and reviewers.

  2. 02

You want a free start and euro prices

isEazy Author: A free tier has no time limit and holds three projects; paid plans begin at €80 a month for one author.

  3. 03

You prefer to buy the software once

ActivePresenter: Pro is $499 per computer with SCORM 1.2, 2004 and xAPI export, and major upgrades are free for the first year.

  4. 04

You want the course data on a server you run

Xerte Online Toolkits: It is open source, installed on your own web server, and exports SCORM packages or standalone zip files.

  5. 05

You need authoring that can sit behind your firewall

dominKnow ONE: Enterprise can be installed on premises, even air-gapped, and learners are not charged.

04

When Articulate 360 is still the right choice

Articulate 360 remains the sensible choice when a team builds custom interactions in Storyline, publishes responsive courses in Rise and wants a review app, translation and an LMS in one purchase from one vendor. Its pricing page offers a 14-day trial and local-currency purchase through resellers, and skills in the tools are widespread, so hiring and handover are easy. If your courses already live in Storyline files and nobody complains about the renewal, rebuilding them elsewhere will usually cost more than the seat difference saves.

05

What moving off Articulate 360 involves

  1. 01

Take stock of what lives only in Articulate

List the Storyline and Rise projects, the review comments you still need, and any translations bought with credits. The terms we read name no export right, so ask for exports in writing and keep the source files in your own storage.

  2. 02

Check the notice dates before you decide

Renewal is automatic and seat reductions need 30 days' written notice before the term ends. Put that date in a calendar first, then plan the pilot around it, so you are not renewing seats you meant to drop.

  3. 03

Rebuild one course and test it in your LMS

Storyline interactions will not convert automatically. Rebuild one representative course in the new tool, publish it as SCORM or xAPI, and check tracking and completion in your own LMS before moving the rest.
