What is Sumo Logic?

Sumo Logic is a cloud log analytics and security vendor headquartered in the United States. Its platform collects logs, metrics and traces, and its Cloud SIEM sits in the Enterprise Suite. The vendor describes the SIEM as cloud-native, with real-time threat detection and what it calls agentic investigation, where a SOC Analyst Agent investigates alerts and returns evidence-backed verdicts. Security teams use it to gather events from cloud and on-premises sources, match them against detection rules, and work through the resulting alerts, called insights.

Operations teams use the same platform for troubleshooting application and infrastructure logs. Licensing is credit-based, with an Essentials plan that has a free trial and an Enterprise Suite that is quoted by sales. The vendor says users are unlimited. Because one platform covers observability and security, the buying decision usually turns on which tier and licensing model matches your log volume.

03

Sumo Logic key features

  • MITRE ATT&CK Coverage Explorer. Maps your detection rules to adversary tactics and techniques so you can see which parts of the framework have no rule behind them. The vendor presents it as a way to find coverage gaps.
  • Detection-as-Code. Teams can manage detection rules in GitHub, which lets rule changes follow the same review and version history as other code. The vendor lists this under detections.
  • Automation Service and playbooks. Built-in playbooks enrich alerts and send notifications, and they can run manually or automatically when an insight is created or closed. The vendor cites hundreds of out-of-the-box integrations and playbooks.
  • User and Entity Behavior Analytics. Baselines normal behavior from historical data to flag insider threats, compromised accounts and policy violations. The vendor says this reduces false positives compared with static rules.
  • Threat intelligence enrichment. Alerts are enriched with intelligence from multiple sources, and customers can add their own curated feeds.
  • SOC Analyst Agent. Investigates alerts autonomously and returns verdicts with evidence. The vendor claims it can cut mean time to response by up to 75%. The pricing page says it requires SIEM plus a DojoAI credit.
  • MCP Server and Mobot. An MCP Server connects clients such as Claude Code to the SIEM, and Mobot supports natural-language workflows.
04

Who Sumo Logic suits

  • A 15-person security team at a SaaS company. The team can collect AWS CloudTrail and Kubernetes logs, map its rules in the ATT&CK Explorer and use playbooks to enrich alerts before an analyst opens them, which keeps the queue manageable without a large SOC.
  • A DevOps group that also owns security. Because logs, metrics and traces sit on one platform, the group can troubleshoot an outage and review the audit trail in the same tool. Essentials covers observability, while SIEM ingest needs the Enterprise Suite.
  • A compliance-driven organisation. A team under PCI or HIPAA scope can use the vendor's published attestations and the PCI compliance app as supporting material, keeping log retention under customer-defined settings on the Enterprise Suite.
05

Getting started with Sumo Logic

The pricing page offers a free trial through a sign-up page, and self-serve credit card checkout is available for purchases up to $25,000 in credits. Larger purchases and the Enterprise Suite go through sales. After sign-up you add data sources, using the app catalog for sources such as AWS CloudTrail, Amazon S3 audit logs, Apache, Kubernetes, Linux and NGINX.

For SIEM, you then review detection rules, connect threat intelligence and set up playbooks. The vendor does not state a setup time, and the pages we read do not describe onboarding services beyond a New Logo Onboarding Acceleration promotion mentioned in a pricing footnote.

What we make of Sumo Logic

Sumo Logic places Cloud SIEM in its Enterprise Suite and lists unlimited users on both plans, while the cheaper Essentials plan shows no SIEM log ingest.

Licensing runs on Sumo credits, in tiers or in a Flex option where search is billed separately, which is harder to forecast than a flat gigabyte rate. It is headquartered in Redwood City, California, and the Enterprise Suite price comes only from sales.

In our SIEM software ranking Sumo Logic stands at #6 of 12: it follows Securonix and comes before Datadog. After the challenger places, Sumo Logic is one of the established names, ranked in order and without a score.

North America is home to 10 of the 12 vendors, Sumo Logic among them (the United States).

Sumo Logic pros and cons in practice

    Works well
    • Logs, metrics, traces and SIEM share one vendor, which suits teams that want observability and security in a single contract.
    • The Essentials tier has a free trial and card checkout, so a small team can start without a sales call.
    • Published attestations cover FedRAMP, SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI DSS and ISO 27001, which shortens many vendor reviews.
    • Unlimited users are stated, so seats do not drive the cost.
    Gets in the way
    • No prices are printed for Essentials or the Enterprise Suite, so budgeting requires a quote or an estimate of credits.
    • Cloud SIEM is only in the Enterprise Suite, so teams on Essentials cannot use the SIEM ingest tiers.
    • The SOC Analyst Agent needs both SIEM and a DojoAI credit, adding a second line item to plan for.
    • Credit-based licensing with several tier types (Continuous, Frequent, Infrequent, Flex) takes effort to model against real volume.

A full write-up exists: Sumo Logic alternatives, with reasons buyers leave and what moving involves.

    • Microsoft Sentinel (#9 of 12): Aimed at: Organisations that already run workloads in Azure and use Microsoft security tools. (United States)
    • Splunk Enterprise Security (#11 of 12): Splunk's SIEM in Essentials and Premier editions, priced by quote. Watch out: SOAR, UEBA and automated threat analysis appear only in the Premier edition column, so the cheaper edition lacks them. (United States)
    • IBM QRadar (#12 of 12): On-premises SIEM licensed by events per second or managed servers.

When Sumo Logic is still the right call: Sumo Logic stays the better choice when one contract should cover log analytics, a cloud SIEM and SOAR playbooks, because splitting them across vendors adds integration work. Users are unlimited, the credit FAQ says spikes do not trigger overage charges, data can sit in the US, Montreal, Dublin, Frankfurt, Sydney or Tokyo, and the platform lists PCI, SOC 2 Type 2, CSA, ISO and HIPAA certifications. Small teams can also buy credits by card up to $25,000 through the self-serve checkout. If scan volume is low and the SIEM is in daily use, moving costs more than it saves.
