Okta vs Auth0

Okta and Auth0 share a parent, so the choice is about who logs in. Okta sells suites for your own staff, priced per employee. Auth0 sells login for the users of your product, priced by how many are active in a month.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

  1. 01

Does the bill follow employees or end users?

Okta's entry suites are listed per user per month: Starter at 6, Core Essentials at 14 and Essentials at 17, with Professional and Enterprise by inquiry. Auth0 counts monthly active users instead, showing Essentials at 35 and Professional at 240 per month for 500 of them. A headcount you know suits Okta. A user base that can spike suits neither.

    Depends on the buyer

  2. 02

What happens before you pay anything

Auth0's free plan runs to 25,000 monthly active users, with one enterprise connection and five organisations. Okta's Integrator Free Plan stops at 10 monthly active users in a non-production environment, and Okta's workforce suites carry a 1,500 dollar annual contract minimum. For a prototype or a small launch, Auth0 costs nothing to run.

Which features sit behind the next tier?

On Okta, Starter covers SSO, MFA, Universal Directory and 5 workflows. Adaptive MFA, lifecycle management and access governance need Essentials, and Device Access plus Identity Threat Protection need Professional. On Auth0, custom database connections and cross app SSO start at Professional, and the pricing page says enterprise connections, self-service SSO and SCIM need the B2B upgrade.

How easy is it to leave Auth0 or Okta?

Auth0 documents a bulk export of user profiles to JSON or CSV from the dashboard or the Management API. Password hashes and MFA secrets are different: they arrive as a PGP-encrypted file requested through a support case. We found no equivalent exit procedure in the Okta facts we read, so we rate this on what Auth0 states.

When neither fits

If you want to host identity yourself, neither fits, since both are hosted services from the same US company. Keycloak and ZITADEL are the alternatives in our identity ranking worth a look.
