Descript vs Riverside

Descript is an editor first, built around cutting audio and video through the transcript, with a recording room added. Riverside is a recorder first, with editing, hosting and streaming stacked into its tiers. Pick by whether your hours go into recording guests or into editing the result.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

Descript 1 · Riverside 0 · open 3
  1. 01

    Entry cost

Descript's free plan gives 60 media minutes a month, and Hobbyist is $16 per person a month on annual billing ($24 otherwise). Riverside's free plan gives 2 hours of multitrack recording, and Pro is $29 a month or $24 billed annually. Entry prices are close, so the free plans and caps decide it.

    Depends on the buyer

  2. 02

    Recording room limits

Descript Rooms record up to 4K with a track per participant, and allow 10 participants, but recording hours run 2, 5, 15 and 25 across the tiers. Riverside Pro caps separate-track downloads at 15 hours and Grow at 20, with Business unlimited. Both cap recording by plan.

    Depends on the buyer

  3. 03

    Editing depth

Descript's Underlord turns a text instruction into an edited video, and paid tiers include Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words. Riverside lists unlimited single-track editing and Magic Clips on its free plan. Descript's editing is the main product, and it is the deeper of the two here.

    Edge: Descript

  4. 04

    Extras you pay for

Riverside bundles live streaming, social scheduling, a newsletter, a website and podcast hosting into Grow, and webinars for up to 100 registrants into its Webinar tier. Descript's higher tiers add translation and dubbing in 30+ languages and priority support. A buyer wanting only a recorder pays for Riverside's extras anyway.

When neither fits

If you want a free desktop editor or a simple audio-only recorder, neither is the cheapest route. Audacity and Cleanfeed are two alternatives in our podcast recording list.

Descript or Riverside: questions

3 answers
Which has the better free plan?

It depends on the job. Descript gives 60 media minutes a month with a watermark at 720p, while Riverside gives 2 hours of multitrack recording, also at 720p with a watermark.

Do both record each guest separately?

Yes. Descript Rooms records a separate track per participant, and Riverside offers separate track downloads, capped at 15 hours on Pro.

Are the prices current?

We read both pricing pages on the check date. Riverside's page carries a notice that its prices may not be up to date, and neither page labels a currency code.
