DBeaver vs DataGrip

DBeaver starts from a free, open-source Community edition and sells a commercial PRO line on annual terms, with a 14-day trial. DataGrip is a JetBrains IDE that is free for non-commercial use and needs a subscription for commercial work after a 30-day trial. Neither vendor's buy page showed readable prices in our fetch, so the cost gap stays unknown. What the pages do show is a different starting point: a free tool you can extend with paid editions, or a paid IDE with an exemption for personal projects, and DBeaver also lists web and command-line products.

Vendors can pay for more visibility on this website, for example a higher place in a ranking or more room on a page. Commercial relationships can also affect which products we feature and how prominently. Every vendor link is marked the same, whatever the arrangement behind it. How that works.

Where they differ

DBeaver 3 · DataGrip 2 · open 1
  1. 01

Who pays and who does not

DBeaver Community is stated to be free and open source, and the same tool is available to anyone for any purpose. DataGrip splits by use: non-commercial work is free, while commercial use requires a subscription after a free 30-day trial. A freelancer billing clients would pay for DataGrip but not for DBeaver Community. A hobbyist pays for neither, so the difference only appears in paid work. DBeaver is the easier answer for commercial users who do not want a subscription.

  2. 02

    Licence file and source code

DBeaver's about page says the Community edition is free software under the Apache License version 2, although the home page describes the licence file only as ASL. DataGrip's pages name no open-source licence and describe a locally installed JetBrains IDE on Windows, macOS and Linux. A team that must read or fork the source can do so with DBeaver Community. A team that only needs to install and run a closed IDE faces no such question, so this matters mainly to open-source minded buyers.

  3. 03

Over 50 databases in one window

DataGrip states support for over 50 local and cloud-based databases, with schema-aware code completion, error detection and quick-fixes across several SQL dialects. DBeaver PRO adds NoSQL support for MongoDB, Cassandra and Redis, cloud databases such as Redshift and BigQuery, ODBC, a visual query builder and a task scheduler. The pages do not give DBeaver a database count. Where breadth is the concern, the stated number gives DataGrip the edge on the page. DBeaver's own database count is not given on the pages read.

  4. 04

Rescuing a script that overwrote rows

DataGrip names built-in local history and Git integration for SQL scripts, plus history and recovery as a feature, and says every query run by the user or by AI agents is tracked. It also lets you filter, sort and modify results in interactive tables. DBeaver Community lists a data editor, SQL editor, task management, database maintenance tools and AI chat. Local history is not named for DBeaver on the pages read. DataGrip takes this round. DataGrip takes this round because recovery is named there.

  5. 05

Editions, web versions and a CLI

DBeaver's buy page lists annual subscriptions for Lite, Enterprise and Ultimate on the desktop, CloudBeaver Enterprise and Team Edition on the web, and dbvr as a per-machine command-line licence. Team Edition needs at least one admin and two users. DataGrip's pages show one product, with monthly and yearly plans through the JetBrains Toolbox, and no web or command-line variant. A team wanting a browser-based version or a command-line tool finds only DBeaver in these pages. Pick DBeaver for the range of products.

    Edge: DBeaver

  6. 06

    Amounts nobody could read

DBeaver's price tables showed only 'Loading' in our fetch and its pricing address returned 404. DataGrip's buy page also did not render its price table, so no amount, currency or billing basis could be read. DBeaver names copyright as DBeaver Corp without a location. DataGrip names JetBrains s.r.o. as copyright holder, with no address. Because neither side gives a figure we could verify, we call this round level and suggest checking both stores in your own currency before committing a team budget.

    Depends on the buyer

When neither fits

DBeaver or DataGrip: questions

3 answers
Can a company use DataGrip without paying?

The page says DataGrip is free for non-commercial use and that commercial use requires a subscription. A free 30-day trial is offered for commercial evaluation. A company should plan to subscribe once the trial ends.

Is there a trial for DBeaver PRO?

Yes, the buy page mentions a 14-day trial licence to evaluate DBeaver PRO. Students can also request a free licence through an academic form. The Community edition has no trial because it is free.

What does DBeaver PRO add over Community?

The home page lists advanced security, advanced AI, ODBC, NoSQL support, cloud databases, a visual query builder, a task scheduler and performance tools. Support is also named as part of PRO. Community keeps the data editor, SQL editor, task management and maintenance tools.
