Snowflake alternatives: 11 data warehouse tools compared
Teams look for a Snowflake alternative when consumption billing becomes hard to forecast, when they want to run the engine themselves, or when their data already lives on one cloud. Most move to a warehouse from their cloud provider, to a usage-priced columnar engine such as ClickHouse, or to a smaller product with a flat platform fee.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Snowflake in our data warehouse software ranking are Databricks SQL, Google BigQuery and Amazon Redshift. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Databricks SQL if you want SQL warehousing on the same platform as data engineering and machine learning. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Data Warehouse Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Snowflake.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say
about a product. How that works.
Pricing: Consumption-based compute and monthly storage; four editions
Established in: United States
Built for: Larger organisations sharing data across many business units
Not for: Small teams that want a single predictable monthly bill
01
Why buyers look past Snowflake
01
Consumption billing and four editions
Snowflake's pricing page describes a consumption-based model with four editions: Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical and Virtual Private Snowflake. Multi-cluster compute starts at Enterprise, and Tri-Secret Secure and failover start at Business Critical. A buyer who needs those features therefore moves up an edition, and the page we fetched showed no figures without a platform and region selected.
02
Storage and compute are billed separately
Storage is a monthly fee on the average compressed volume, bought on demand or as pre-paid capacity, while compute is metered apart from it. Two buyers with the same data can pay different amounts depending on how long warehouses run. Teams that want one unit, such as Yellowbrick's per-vCPU price, find that easier to forecast.
03
No self-hosted option on the page
Snowflake presents itself as a fully managed product and we found no self-hosted edition on the pricing page. Buyers who want the engine in their own account or on their own hardware look at ClickHouse (Apache-2.0), StarRocks (Apache-2.0), Firebolt Core, Exasol Personal or Yellowbrick, each of which lists a route like that.

What each one does differently
1
Databricks SQL
United States · Pay as you go; 14-day trial; committed-use discounts
Bills warehouse compute on a pay-as-you-go basis with a 14-day free trial, and offers committed-use discounts by contact. It sits inside the wider Databricks data and AI platform, so you also meet Databricks pricing pages for jobs, pipelines and other products. We did not verify a per-unit SQL rate on the page.
Switch from Snowflake if you want SQL warehousing on the same platform as data engineering and machine learning.
United States · Per TiB scanned or per slot-hour, published; monthly free query allowance
Prices queries per TiB scanned (USD 6.25 after the first free 1 TiB per month) or per slot-hour of reserved capacity, with one- and three-year commitments. Storage is billed separately, with 10 GiB free monthly. There are no warehouse sizes to choose, but a badly filtered query costs by bytes read.
Switch from Snowflake if you are already on Google Cloud and want to pay for data scanned rather than warehouse uptime.
United States · Per RPU-hour serverless or per node-hour provisioned, published; credit-based trial
Offers Provisioned clusters from USD 0.543 per hour and Serverless from USD 1.50 per hour, billed per second when serverless. First-time Serverless users get a USD 300 credit expiring after 90 days. It is an AWS service, so networking, storage and billing follow your AWS account.
Switch from Snowflake if your data and applications already run on AWS and you want one invoice.
United States · Usage-based compute, storage and egress, published; credit-based trial
Cloud tiers Basic, Scale and Enterprise bill compute per unit-hour and storage at USD 25.30 per TB per month, with a 30-day trial and USD 300 credits. The engine is also available as Apache-2.0 software you run yourself. It is built for fast analytical queries, and tier limits such as 1 TB on Basic apply.
Switch from Snowflake if you want an engine you can also self-host and are comfortable choosing compute units.
Not stated by the vendor · Free Lite plan; Business per organisation per month plus usage, published
Built on DuckDB. The Lite plan costs USD 0 with up to 3 active users and 10 GB storage; Business is USD 250 per organisation per month plus usage, with a 7-day trial. Compute is billed per second on single-node instances. Enterprise is quoted, and Business caps at 10 internal active users.
Switch from Snowflake if your team is small and you want a flat platform fee with per-second compute.
Not stated by the vendor · Compute per second and storage per GB-month, published; self-hosted Core at no charge
Charges compute per second and storage as pass-through object storage (USD 0.0264 per GB per month on its calculator), with USD 200 in free credits. Firebolt Core is a self-hosted edition under the Elastic License 2.0. The vendor says its open source release is still in Preview.
Switch from Snowflake if you want per-second billing and a self-hosted engine you can test on a laptop.
United States · Hourly managed plans from a published rate; free shared workspace; BYOC quoted
Sells Helios Cloud Standard from USD 0.99 per hour and Enterprise from USD 1.49 per hour, with a free Shared workspace limited to evaluation and non-production testing. It also lists a Self-Managed edition. It is a relational database with vector and JSON support, not a pure warehouse.
Switch from Snowflake if you need one database for transactional-style apps and analytics, and want hourly pricing.
United States · Per vCPU per year or per vCPU-hour, published; trial offered
Prices software only: USD 613 per vCPU per year, USD 482 on a three-year term, or USD 0.28 per vCPU-hour on demand. You pay your own cloud or on-premises infrastructure separately. Because the unit is vCPU and not a credit, there is no credit conversion to learn.
Switch from Snowflake if you want a vCPU-based price you can run in your own cloud account or on premises.
Not stated by the vendor · Free under Apache 2.0; no vendor price list
An open source analytical database under the Apache License 2.0, run by the community project. The StarRocks site lists no vendor price list. You operate it yourself or find a provider, and its Slack, forum and documentation are the support routes on the site.
Switch from Snowflake if you have engineers to run an Apache-2.0 engine and want no licence fee.
Germany · Quoted per organisation; personal edition for individual use
Runs as an analytics database from Exasol AG in Nuremberg. Exasol Personal is free for individual use and installs locally or in your own cloud. Enterprise prices are not on the pages we fetched. Mind that Personal is for individuals, so a team has to talk to sales.
Switch from Snowflake if you want a European-built in-memory database you can try locally before buying.
United States · Fixed commitment plus flex usage in Teradata Units; rates not on page
Sells Fixed + Flex: a committed baseline plus on-demand capacity, measured in Teradata Units. Packages come in three levels, with cloud, customer cloud or on-premises deployment. Rates are not shown on the pricing page. A free ClearScape Analytics environment needs no card.
Switch from Snowflake if you run large enterprise warehouses and want a committed baseline, with an on-premises option.
Snowflake remains a sound choice when you want a fully managed warehouse with a single vendor, data sharing, and editions that add governance and failover as your needs grow. Its pricing page lists Business Critical for regulated data and Virtual Private Snowflake for a separate environment. If your finance team accepts consumption billing and you do not need to host the engine yourself, a move may cost more in migration time than it saves.

What moving off Snowflake involves
01
Rewrite SQL and objects first
Snowflake-specific objects such as Snowpark code, data sharing and Time Travel have no direct equivalent everywhere. Firebolt documents a Snowflake compatibility page and a BigQuery one, which shows the vendor expects migrations, but each target needs its own SQL test. Inventory stored procedures and shares before choosing.
02
Compare cost on one real workload
List prices use different units: credits, TiB scanned, RPU-hours, vCPU-hours or Teradata Units. Run the same month of queries and the same stored volume on two shortlisted products and compare the invoices, not the rate cards. Check egress, since ClickHouse Cloud lists public internet egress from USD 0.1152 per GB.
03
Plan for a period of double running
Keep Snowflake active until reports match on the new platform. Storage keeps billing on both sides during that period, and a trial credit such as Redshift's 90-day USD 300 credit or ClickHouse's 30-day USD 300 credits helps cover the test.

Questions about replacing Snowflake
6 answers
What does Snowflake cost?
Snowflake lists consumption-based pricing across Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical and Virtual Private Snowflake editions, with storage billed monthly on compressed data.
The page we fetched did not show prices until a platform and region are selected, so we state no figures. Check the consumption table linked from the pricing page.
Which Snowflake alternative can I run myself?
ClickHouse and StarRocks are Apache-2.0 projects. Firebolt Core is a self-hosted edition under the Elastic License 2.0, which is not an open source licence. Yellowbrick sells software you run in your own cloud or on premises, and Exasol Personal installs locally for individual use.
Which alternatives publish a clear price?
Yellowbrick lists USD 613 per vCPU per year, USD 482 on three years and USD 0.28 per vCPU-hour. BigQuery lists USD 6.25 per TiB after the first free TiB.
MotherDuck lists USD 250 per organisation per month on Business. Teradata and Exasol Enterprise show no rates on the pages we fetched.
Is there a cheap way to test an alternative?
Yes, several offer entry points. MotherDuck Lite starts at USD 0, SingleStore has a free Shared workspace for non-production testing, Firebolt lists USD 200 in credits, ClickHouse gives 30 days and USD 300 in credits, and Databricks SQL offers a 14-day free trial.
Where is Snowflake based?
Snowflake Inc. lists its address as Suite 3A, 106 East Babcock Street, Bozeman, Montana, in its privacy policy, and a Menlo Park, California address for a grievance officer. We found no statement of a single headquarters country beyond that.
Does an alternative need a different cloud?
BigQuery is a Google Cloud service and Redshift an AWS service, so you work inside that cloud. ClickHouse Cloud, SingleStore Helios and Databricks list AWS, Azure or Google Cloud options on their pages, though regions vary by product and we did not check every region.
