Retool alternatives are sought by teams that outgrow its metering or that need something other than an engineer-built internal screen. Some want a licence that does not count builders, internal users and workflow runs separately, others want open source or a self-hosted deployment without an enterprise contract, and others need an enterprise platform with a fixed licence. They move to open-source builders, user-licensed process platforms or model-driven enterprise suites.
Short answer: The first three alternatives to Retool in our low-code platform ranking are Simplifier, WEBCON and Thinkwise. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Simplifier if you run SAP, want to host in Europe or on-premises, and accept a sales-led purchase. All 15 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Low-Code Platform in 2026, and each says where it differs from Retool.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say
about a product. How that works.
Pricing: Free plan up to 5 users; per builder and internal user per month, published; extra workflow runs sold in packs
Established in: United States
Built for: Engineering teams building internal tools across many data sources
Not for: Organisations that need a predictable single-line bill
01
Why buyers look past Retool
01
Three meters, not one
Retool's published price list bills builders and internal users at different rates (Team is EUR 9 per builder and EUR 5 per internal user a month on annual billing, Business EUR 46 and EUR 14), counts external users separately above 50, and caps workflow runs at 500 a month on Free and 5,000 on Team and Business. Extra runs cost EUR 60 per 5,000. A team that automates heavily sees the bill grow in a direction the headcount does not predict.
02
Self-hosting sits on the top tier
The pricing page lists self-hosted and air-gapped deployment, Git source control and the full SSO, SCIM and 2FA set only on the Enterprise plan, which is priced on request. Retool's documentation describes self-managed deployment on a Kubernetes cluster with Helm. Regulated organisations that need to host the tool themselves therefore negotiate a contract before they can test the real setup.
03
Built for engineers, priced for a wider audience
Retool's own text defines a builder as a user who created or edited an app or workflow in the billing cycle, and bills that person at the higher rate. The product suits developers who want to see the query. Organisations whose app authors are analysts or process owners often prefer a platform licensed by user or by flat fee, with the builders included.

Simplifier
Germany · Quoted per organisation; pricing not published
Simplifier is a platform company from Wurzburg, Germany, aimed at SAP-heavy estates, offered on-premises, hybrid or in an EU cloud, with source-code ownership stressed on its site. Pricing is not published, so there is no Retool-style self-serve tier and no free plan to test with.
Switch from Retool if you run SAP, want to host in Europe or on-premises, and accept a sales-led purchase.
Poland · Per user tier (Lite, Core, Premium) plus a server licence, subscription or perpetual, quoted; 30-day trial
WEBCON licenses users (Lite, Core and Premium tiers, subscription or perpetual) rather than applications, and states that apps, workflows, integrations and automations are unlimited at no extra charge. That removes the workflow-run meter Retool sells in packs, but it is a process platform, not a database-first screen builder.
Switch from Retool if approval processes and workflow runs, not admin screens, drive your Retool bill.
Netherlands · Quoted per organisation; pricing not published
Thinkwise, based in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, is a model-driven platform for replacing legacy business systems such as ERP, WMS and CRM, with an AI layer and an MCP connection for agents. It builds whole applications from models, not screens over existing databases, and pricing is quoted.
Switch from Retool if the internal tool has grown into a core business system that should be replaced, not wrapped.
India · Open source self-hosted; free plan for up to 5 cloud users; Business $15 per user per month, published
Appsmith is the closest like-for-like replacement: the same drag-a-table-onto-a-query model, with an Apache 2.0 open-source edition on GitHub that can run on your own infrastructure. The cloud Free plan covers 5 users, Business is USD 15 per user a month, and Enterprise starts at USD 2,500 a month for 100 users.
Switch from Retool if you want Retool's model with a self-hostable open-source edition and a flat per-user price.
United Kingdom · Free self-hosted; cloud plans from $19 a month plus $5 per end user, published
Budibase pairs an open-source edition (GPLv3 overall, self-hosted, unlimited users) with cloud plans from USD 19 a month that include one creator and charge USD 5 per end user. Cloud plans cap automation actions per month. Retool's connector catalogue was not compared on the vendor's pages.
Switch from Retool if a small team wants a self-hosted internal tool builder with no per-seat fee.
Netherlands · Open source self-hosted; free cloud plan; paid cloud per user per month, published
Baserow starts from the database, not the query: tables, views and forms, with an application builder and automations on top. Its core is MIT licensed and can be self-hosted. Cloud plans meter rows, storage and automation credits per workspace, and it is a database product first, not a query-to-screen tool.
Switch from Retool if the tool is mostly a structured data store with forms and views for non-developers.
Netherlands · Free plan; Standard from EUR 918 a month for one app or EUR 2,295 for unlimited apps, published; scaled by users; Premium quoted
Mendix is a model-driven enterprise platform that deploys to Mendix Cloud, Kubernetes, Azure or SAP BTP. It is a heavier build environment with its own IDE (Studio Pro) and release trains, aimed at applications that must last, and suits central IT teams more than an engineer wiring up an admin panel.
Switch from Retool if IT wants governed, long-lived applications with a formal release process.
United States · Premium per user per month, published, premium connectors included; pay-as-you-go option; extra Dataverse capacity per GB
Power Apps sits inside the Microsoft estate: it is licensed through Microsoft with per-app and Premium per-user plans plus a pay-as-you-go option on Azure. It is strongest over Microsoft 365 and Dataverse data.
Switch from Retool if your data and identity already live in Microsoft 365 and Azure.
United States · Per application and per user, quoted; free Personal Edition for test apps only
OutSystems is a full application platform that positions itself around agentic systems for the enterprise. Pricing is quoted, with a free Personal Edition for test apps. It covers external customer-facing apps and core systems as well as internal tools; the quoted pricing means no self-serve price check.
Switch from Retool if internal tools are one part of a wider portfolio of customer-facing and core applications.
Germany · Free plan for up to 5 users; Team and Business per user per month, published; Enterprise quoted
Ninox is a database-application builder from Germany with a published euro price list: a Free plan for up to 5 users, Team at EUR 25 and Business at EUR 40 per user a month on annual billing. Record counts and API calls are capped per plan.
Switch from Retool if a small firm wants business staff to build database apps with euro pricing.
India · Free edition for one app; per user per month, published; bundled in Zoho One
Zoho Creator is a form-and-report application builder from Zoho, with a free edition for one app, a 15-day trial and Standard, Professional, Enterprise and Flex plans. It is sold as part of Zoho's suite, so check how it connects to databases outside Zoho.
Switch from Retool if you already pay for Zoho and want apps next to that suite.
Netherlands · Flat monthly fee from EUR 1,500 with unlimited users and an app bundle, published; Enterprise quoted
Betty Blocks charges a flat monthly fee, EUR 1,500 for Create and EUR 3,500 for Scale, with unlimited internal, external and anonymous users and unlimited builders inside an app bundle. On-premises hosting appears only on the Enterprise plan. It is the one here that removes seat counting entirely, at a high entry price.
Switch from Retool if user counts make per-seat pricing unpredictable and a fixed monthly fee is preferable.
United States · Per user, per month, per app across three tiers, quoted; free Community Edition for learning
Appian is a process-first platform priced per user, per month, per app across tiers, with case management, RPA and document processing on the platform. A free Community Edition exists for learning. It targets regulated, case-heavy workflows and is far from Retool's quick database-to-screen use.
Switch from Retool if the work is case management and regulated process automation.
United States · Free plan for building; paid plans per month with workload units and editor seats, published
Bubble describes itself as a no-code AI app builder for web and mobile apps. Its pricing page could not be read in our check, so we do not state its plans or prices; confirm plans and hosting options with the vendor.
Switch from Retool if you are building a customer-facing product and no engineers are available.
Norway · Quoted per organisation; pricing not published; 30-day trial
Neptune DXP builds apps that run inside SAP ECC and S/4HANA, reusing SAP roles, BAPIs and OData, with offline-capable mobile apps. Its own site says a general-purpose platform serves better when there is no SAP dependency. Pricing is quoted, and it is a narrow tool by design.
Switch from Retool if SAP is the system your business runs on and apps must use its roles and logic.
Retool remains the right choice when engineers build the tools and want to see and edit the query, when the estate mixes many databases and APIs, and when the Free plan (5 users) or the Team plan covers the team without heavy workflow use. Its published euro price list is easy to model for a small group. The cost grows when you add builders, external users or workflow runs, so count those three before deciding. If you need self-hosting, ask for the Enterprise terms before assuming a cheaper plan includes it.

What moving off Retool involves
01
Applications do not export cleanly
Retool apps are built in Retool's own editor and format, with queries, transformers and component bindings that other builders do not read. Plan to rebuild screens and re-create queries, and treat the data sources and SQL as the portable part. An open-source builder such as Appsmith or Budibase is the nearest rebuild, but it is a rebuild.
02
Count the meters before you compare prices
Take your current builders, internal users, external users and monthly workflow runs from the Retool billing page, then price the same load on each candidate. A per-user model can look cheaper until the number of occasional viewers is counted, while a flat fee can look expensive until the run packs and external-user tiers are added to the Retool figure.

Questions about replacing Retool
6 answers
Does Retool have a free plan?
Yes. The Free plan covers up to 5 users on Retool cloud, with 500 workflow runs a month and 250 pooled AI credits. External users, audit logs, Git source control and SSO are not included on it.
What does Retool cost per user?
On the published euro price list with annual billing, Team costs EUR 9 per builder and EUR 5 per internal user a month, and Business costs EUR 46 per builder and EUR 14 per internal user.
Enterprise is priced on request. External users on Business are free up to 50, then billed in bands.
Can Retool be self-hosted?
Yes, but the pricing page lists self-hosted and air-gapped deployment on the Enterprise plan. Retool's documentation describes a Retool-managed option on AWS and a self-managed option on a Kubernetes cluster with Helm.
What is the closest open-source alternative?
Appsmith, which publishes an Apache 2.0 edition on GitHub and a similar query-and-widget model. Budibase is also open source (GPLv3 overall) and Baserow's core is MIT licensed, though both start from different premises.
Which alternatives avoid per-run workflow charges?
WEBCON states that its licence covers unlimited applications, workflows and automations and charges by user. Betty Blocks charges a flat monthly fee with unlimited users. Check whether run, row or action limits apply on the specific plan.
Which alternatives suit European hosting requirements?
Simplifier (Germany) offers on-premises, hybrid or EU cloud hosting, Thinkwise is based in the Netherlands, Betty Blocks lists private cloud and on-premises options, and Appsmith and Budibase can be run on your own servers. Confirm the hosting region on the plan you buy.
