Nitro PDF alternatives: 11 PDF editors tools compared

Nitro PDF alternatives are sought by buyers who want a PDF editor with a price they can read on a web page, or one that is free or bought once rather than rented per user. Nitro now sells a wider suite (e-signature, AI redaction, document automation) alongside the editor, so some teams look for a plain editor. They move to a one-off licence, a free tool, a Mac-first editor or a self-hosted option.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Nitro PDF in our PDF editors ranking are Foxit PDF Editor, Power PDF and PDF-XChange Editor. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Foxit PDF Editor if you want the closest equivalent to a per-user subscription editor on Windows, Mac and web. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best PDF Editors in 2026, and each says where it differs from Nitro PDF.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Nitro PDF

#10 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking

  • Pricing: Annual subscription per user, quoted by sales; 14-day trial
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Mid-sized companies that want licence usage reported to IT
  • Not for: Buyers who need a printed price before talking to sales
01

Why buyers look past Nitro PDF

  1. 01

The price is not on the page

Nitro's pricing page lists Nitro PDF Standard and Plus as annual subscriptions per user, with volume discounts through sales, but the figures themselves are not in the page text we could read. Buyers who want to compare a number against a one-off licence or a flat team fee have to go through checkout or a sales contact, which is a reason to look at editors that publish their prices.

  2. 02

Rented by the year, with one bought option

The main Nitro plans are subscriptions. The one-off route is Nitro PDF Classic, a licence for Windows that runs for a three-year term and covers core tools such as editing, combining, splitting and password protection. Teams that want to own an editor outright, or that need more than that Windows-only core set, look at editors sold as perpetual licences or given away.

  3. 03

    A suite around the editor

Nitro presents the editor next to Nitro Sign, Smart Redact and Nitro Automate, and the higher Plus plan adds single sign-on, domain control, Azure Information Protection and usage analytics. That suits larger organisations. A small office that only edits, merges and signs a few PDFs a week may find a narrower tool does the same work for less.

What each one does differently

Foxit PDF Editor

United States · Subscription per user per year or perpetual licence, published; 14-day trial

Foxit sells PDF Editor as an annual per-user plan covering Windows, macOS and a web app, with an AI Assistant and a Workspace that carries 300 free credits a month. It is the nearest like-for-like subscription replacement, aimed at the same office buyer. Like Nitro, the price is not readable in the page text.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you want the closest equivalent to a per-user subscription editor on Windows, Mac and web.

Power PDF

United States · Perpetual licence per edition, published; Business edition from five users; 15-day trial

Power PDF is made by Tungsten Automation and sold in editions: Standard for Windows at $129 and Advanced for Windows at $179, both without a subscription, plus a Business edition from five users with a browser editor and a Microsoft Teams app. It keeps an Office-style interface close to Nitro's. The two priced editions are Windows-only.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you prefer paying once and want an Office-style editor with a Business tier for five or more users.

PDF-XChange Editor

United Kingdom · Free version with most features unrestricted; perpetual licence per user or pack, published

PDF-XChange Editor is a Windows 10 and later application sold as a perpetual licence, with prices starting at EUR 57 for Editor and EUR 73 for Editor Plus. A free version is available with, by the vendor's count, about 70 percent of features unrestricted. Editor Plus adds enhanced OCR and document comparison. There is no Mac version.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you are on Windows, want a low one-off price and can try the free version first.

PDF-XChange Editor, #4 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

Sejda

Netherlands · Free with daily task limits; week pass or subscription per user, published

Sejda runs in the browser with a desktop app, and its free use is capped by page and hourly limits. Paid plans are priced openly: a 7-day pass at EUR 5.50, EUR 8.50 a month for web only, or EUR 71 a year with desktop access included. The paid tier removes page limits and OCRs up to 100 pages. It is a toolbox, not an enterprise suite.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you edit PDFs occasionally and want to pay for a week or a month instead of a year.

Sejda, #2 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

Stirling-PDF

United States · Free plan with self-hosting; Team flat fee per block of 100 users, published; Enterprise quoted

Stirling-PDF is open source with a free plan of 60+ tools that runs on the web, the desktop or your own server, and 1,000 monthly credits for automation. The Team plan costs $99 a month for 100 users, added in blocks of 100, with single sign-on. Enterprise adds air-gapped deployment and SCIM.

Switch from Nitro PDF if documents must stay on your own infrastructure or you want one flat fee rather than per-user seats.

Stirling-PDF, #5 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

PDF Expert

Ireland · Subscription or Mac lifetime licence, published; business seats per year, published

PDF Expert is built for Apple devices: the yearly plan is EUR 84.99 and covers iPhone, iPad and Mac, and a EUR 149.99 lifetime licence covers the Mac version only. It edits text, images and links, includes OCR and has an AI assistant. It does not run on Windows.

Switch from Nitro PDF if your team works on Macs and iPads and would rather buy a lifetime Mac licence.

PDF Expert, #6 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

Xodo

United States · Free plan limited to one action a day; subscription or perpetual desktop licence, published

Xodo splits its pricing by platform: Xodo Web at $7.99 a month, Xodo Desktop (PDF Studio, for Windows, macOS and Linux) at $9.99 a month, or a Document Suite at $14.99 a month, each billed annually. A perpetual desktop licence is available with a support period. Nitro's page lists Mac, Windows and iOS, not Linux.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you need a desktop editor that also runs on Linux, or want one subscription across web, desktop and mobile.

Xodo, #9 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

iLovePDF

Spain · Free plan with limited processing; Premium per user per month, published; Business quoted

iLovePDF is a web tool first, with desktop apps for Mac and Windows and mobile apps. A free Basic plan has limited processing, and Premium costs EUR 5 a month billed annually (EUR 9 billed monthly) for up to 25 users, with Business above that on request. Its strength is quick tasks such as merging and compressing. It is weaker for heavy in-place editing.

Switch from Nitro PDF if most of your PDF work is merging, splitting and converting, and you want a cheap per-seat plan.

iLovePDF, #8 of 15 in our PDF editors ranking →

PDFgear

Singapore · Free; vendor says some advanced features will become paid

PDFgear is free to use with no sign-up, on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, and covers editing, converting, merging and signing, with an AI assistant built in. The vendor states that some advanced features may become paid later. It has no team administration comparable to Nitro's admin portal.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you are an individual or small office that wants a free editor and accepts no admin tooling.

Master PDF Editor

Hong Kong · Perpetual licence per seat with volume tiers, published

Master PDF Editor, from Code Industry, runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and edits text and objects, forms with JavaScript, OCR and digital signatures. The demo has no feature limits apart from a watermark on the output. Its page describes a desktop editor, not a signing or document-automation suite like Nitro's.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you need a plain desktop editor that also runs on Linux and want to test everything before buying.

Soda PDF

Canada · Subscription per licence; business volumes quoted on request

Soda PDF sells Pro, Team (3 to 19 licences) and Business plans on Windows desktop and in the browser, with unlimited AI tools and 5 GB of cloud storage on Pro. Translation is capped at 1,200 pages a year on Pro. The page lists no prices without a click-through, and the desktop app is Windows only.

Switch from Nitro PDF if you want a Nitro-style Windows editor with browser access and small-team licences.

When Nitro PDF is still the right choice

Nitro PDF stays the right choice when your organisation already runs it and needs what the Plus plan adds: single sign-on, domain control, Azure Information Protection and usage analytics, with Nitro Sign for e-signature in the same vendor relationship. It also covers Mac, Windows and iOS under one subscription, which several of the cheaper tools do not. If those controls matter to your IT team, a cheaper editor will not replace them.

05

What moving off Nitro PDF involves

  1. 01

Check licences and renewal dates first

Nitro's subscriptions run per user per year, and the Classic licence runs for a three-year term. Look at the end date of each before cancelling, and plan the cutover for the renewal so you do not pay twice. Volume deals agreed through sales have their own terms, so read the contract.

  2. 02

    Test your real documents

Run the PDFs that cause trouble today through the shortlisted editor: scanned files, forms, files with signatures and anything with tracked redactions. Editing and OCR quality differs by tool, and the free versions of PDF-XChange, Sejda and Master PDF Editor let you try this before buying anything.

  3. 03

Signing and redaction may live elsewhere

If you use Nitro Sign or Smart Redact, they are separate products. Moving the editor does not move them. Decide whether the new editor's own signing and redaction tools are enough, or whether you keep those products and replace only the editor.

Questions about replacing Nitro PDF

6 answers
Is there a free alternative to Nitro PDF?

Yes. PDFgear is free to use with no sign-up, Stirling-PDF has a free plan with 60+ tools that can be self-hosted, and PDF-XChange Editor has a free version with most features unrestricted. Sejda also has a free tier, but with page and hourly limits.

Which Nitro PDF alternative can I buy once instead of subscribing?

Power PDF sells Standard and Advanced editions for Windows without a subscription, PDF-XChange Editor is a perpetual licence from EUR 57, and PDF Expert offers a lifetime licence for Mac only. Xodo's desktop app also has a perpetual licence option with a support period.

What is the best Nitro PDF alternative for Mac?

PDF Expert is built for Mac, iPhone and iPad. Foxit PDF Editor and Xodo both list macOS support, and PDFgear runs on Mac for free. PDF-XChange Editor and the Windows-only Power PDF editions do not apply.

Can I self-host a PDF editor instead of using Nitro?

Stirling-PDF is the one in this set that offers self-hosting, with a free plan and an Enterprise plan for air-gapped deployments. The other tools here are desktop applications or cloud services.

Which alternative suits a small team on Windows?

Power PDF and PDF-XChange Editor are Windows applications that you pay for once, and Soda PDF sells Team licences for 3 to 19 users. Compare the editing and OCR features on your own files before choosing.

Do these alternatives replace Nitro Sign?

Not all of them. Some editors include a sign feature, such as Sejda, PDF Expert and PDFgear, but they are not a full signing workflow with audit logs and templates. Check whether the sign feature meets your legal and audit needs before dropping Nitro Sign.
