Midjourney alternatives: 12 AI image generators tools compared

People look for a Midjourney alternative when the tiers stop matching how they work: GPU hours that run out, privacy that needs a higher tier, or a company-size rule that forces them above the entry plan. They move to credit-based subscriptions from other vendors, to pay per image, or to tools they control themselves.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Midjourney in our AI image generators ranking are OpenArt, Krea and Playground. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose OpenArt if you want a Midjourney-style subscription with credits you can top up. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best AI Image Generators in 2026, and each says where it differs from Midjourney.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Midjourney

#13 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking

  • Pricing: Four subscription tiers per month or year, published; yearly billing is paid upfront at a lower rate
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Individual creators who want a subscription tool and can choose a tier by monthly GPU hours
  • Not for: Companies above one million dollars in revenue that only want the entry tier
01

Why buyers look past Midjourney

  1. 01

Privacy and Relax mode depend on the tier

Midjourney's plans page puts Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, on Pro and Mega only. Basic has no Relax mode, and Standard has it for images but not for video. A freelancer who needs private work and unlimited slow generations pays $60 a month, or $48 on a yearly plan paid upfront.

  2. 02

Your company size can decide the tier

The plans page says a company with more than $1,000,000 gross revenue a year must buy Pro or Mega. Basic at $10 a month is therefore not an option for a larger business, and the real entry price becomes $60 monthly or $576 for a year, billed in full upfront.

  3. 03

Fast hours are a fixed monthly pot

Fast GPU time is 3.3 hours on Basic, 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro and 60 on Mega, and extra time costs $4 an hour on every plan. Teams with uneven months either overbuy a tier or pay the hourly rate, which is the pain that per-image and per-credit pricing elsewhere avoids.

Magnific (formerly Freepik)

Spain · Per month, billed yearly, three tiers published; credit top-ups

Formerly Freepik, now run by a Spanish company in Malaga. Plans are priced in euros: Premium €12 a month on yearly billing, Premium+ €27, Pro Starter €66. Credits last a year instead of resetting monthly. The pricing page shows no unpaid plan and a 30-day refund guarantee.

Switch from Midjourney if you prefer euro billing and credits that do not reset each month.

Magnific (formerly Freepik), #12 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking →

Recraft

United Kingdom · Credit subscriptions per month or year; prepaid API units

Switch from Midjourney if you want written ownership terms and private output on paid plans.

Scenario

United States · Free tier; monthly credit plans, published; enterprise quoted

Built for game and product teams, with Starter at $15 (1,500 credits), Pro at $45 (5,000) and Max at $75 (10,000, up to 25 users). Custom model training starts at Pro. Credits do not roll over, and the 50 starter credits are for personal and evaluation use only.

ComfyUI

United States · Open source app; Comfy Cloud subscriptions per month, published

A node-based workflow tool with a free desktop app and Comfy Cloud at $20 (Standard), $35 (Creator), $100 (Pro) and $700 (Team) a month. Credits pay for active GPU time. Importing your own models needs Creator or higher. It asks you to build workflows rather than type a prompt.

Switch from Midjourney if you want control over models and workflows and accept a steeper start.

ComfyUI, #8 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking →

Black Forest Labs

Germany · Pay per image, published; licence tiers for model weights

No subscription: the page shows pay-as-you-go use, with $0.048 per image at its default 768 by 768 settings. Commercial licence tiers (Builder, Platform, Professional, Enterprise) cap images per month and domains, and their prices are not listed. It is a model supplier from Freiburg, Germany, not a consumer app.

Switch from Midjourney if you build your own product and want a per-image price instead of GPU hours.

Black Forest Labs, #2 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking →

Stability AI

United Kingdom · Credit-based API; self-hosted community licence below a revenue threshold

Model licences, not a hosted subscription: the Community licence covers organisations under $1M annual revenue, and above that an Enterprise licence is required at custom pricing. Outputs are owned by the user. You run models like Stable Diffusion 3.5 yourself, so setup and hardware are yours to arrange.

Switch from Midjourney if you want to run models in your own environment under a written licence.

Stability AI, #7 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking →

Bria

Israel · Free tier; pay per generation, published; enterprise quoted

Aimed at developers: 100 generations to try with no card, then from $0.018 per generation through an API. Enterprise adds unlimited IP indemnification, while pay-as-you-go carries capped indemnification. Offices are in Tel Aviv and New York. It offers no consumer gallery or Relax-style unlimited mode.

Switch from Midjourney if you generate images inside an application and want indemnification terms.

A product-photo editor from Paris, not an art generator. Pro offers 8,000 credits and 1,000 exports a month, Max 25,000 and 3,000 with video and a Shopify integration, Ultra 75,000 and 10,000 with 4K. The pricing page shows no dollar amounts, and Pro and Max show trial buttons.

Switch from Midjourney if your images are product shots and listings, not illustrations.

Photoroom, #10 of 13 in our AI image generators ranking →

Pixlr

Singapore · Per month or year, four tiers, published; extra credit packs

A browser editor with AI tools whose paid plans start at $1.99 a month, according to its homepage. Paid tiers add AI credits, all image, video and audio models, and a priority queue. The homepage does not show credit counts or per-plan prices, so compare tiers on its pricing page.

Switch from Midjourney if you want a cheap editor with AI tools more than a dedicated generator.

When Midjourney is still the right choice

Midjourney stays the right choice when a tier matches your volume and you can use its structure. The plans page gives Standard 15 fast hours and unlimited Relax images, Pro and Mega add Stealth Mode, and the changelog shows folders you can share with Collaborators or Viewers. Staying also avoids rebuilding your habits in a new tool, which has a cost of its own. If you are a company under $1,000,000 revenue and Standard at $30 a month covers you, nothing here forces a move.

05

What moving off Midjourney involves

  1. 01

Count your hours before comparing prices

Look at last month's fast GPU use before you pick a replacement. Midjourney's tiers bundle hours, so a per-credit or per-image plan only wins if your monthly volume is below what you paid for. Yearly Midjourney plans are paid upfront and renew automatically unless you cancel, so check the renewal date first.

  2. 02

Read the licence line on each plan

Alternatives differ on who owns the images: Recraft's unpaid plan keeps ownership with Recraft and OpenArt's Starter has no commercial use rights, while Playground states a licence on every plan. Check the licence of the exact plan you will buy, because the answer changes between tiers of the same vendor.

Questions about replacing Midjourney

6 answers
What is the cheapest alternative to Midjourney?

Playground Pro at $12 a month on yearly billing and Krea Pro at $21 are the lowest paid entries we checked, against Midjourney Basic at $8 a month yearly.

Pixlr lists paid plans from $1.99 a month, but it is an editor first. Compare credits and licence terms, not only the sticker price.

Is there an alternative to Midjourney with an unpaid plan?

Krea gives 100 units a day, Playground a Free plan with 3 monthly credits, Recraft an unpaid plan without commercial rights, and Bria 100 generations to try. Midjourney's plans page names no trial. Check each unpaid plan's licence before using output commercially.

Which alternative is best for commercial work?

Playground lists a royalty-free licence on every plan, Krea includes a commercial licence from Pro, and Recraft gives ownership on paid plans. Midjourney itself requires Pro or Mega for companies above $1,000,000 revenue. Read each vendor's terms for your own use case.

Can I run an alternative on my own hardware?

Stability AI licenses models you can run yourself, free under $1M revenue, and ComfyUI has a free desktop app. Neither is a hosted subscription, so you manage hardware, updates and the workflow. We did not test image quality against Midjourney.

Is there a European alternative to Midjourney?

Black Forest Labs (Freiburg, Germany), Photoroom (Paris) and Magnific (Malaga, Spain) are based in Europe. Photoroom is a product-photo editor, Black Forest Labs is a pay-per-image model supplier, and Magnific is the closest to a subscription creative platform. Midjourney is based in the United States.

How does pay per image compare with Midjourney tiers?

Black Forest Labs shows $0.048 per image at default settings and Bria starts at $0.018 per generation. Midjourney charges $4 for an extra GPU hour and states no per-image price, so a fair comparison needs your own count of images per month.
