Bitly alternatives: 11 link shorteners and QR codes tools compared

The typical searcher started on Bitly's free account, hit the five-links-a-month cap, and found that a custom domain only arrives at the Growth plan. They move to a shortener with a larger free allowance and more custom domains, to a self-hosted tool they run themselves, or to a specialist for one use such as affiliate links or WordPress.

Short answer: The closest replacements for Bitly in our link shorteners and QR codes ranking are Rebrandly, Short.io and Dub. Choose Rebrandly if you want a branded domain without paying for Bitly's Growth plan. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Link Shortener Software in 2026, and each says where it differs from Bitly.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Bitly

#12 of 12 in our link shorteners and QR codes ranking

  • Not for: Individuals who create more than a few links a month for free
01

Why buyers look past Bitly

  1. 01

    The free plan is small

Bitly's free plan allows 5 short links and 2 QR codes a month, with 30 days of click and scan data and no custom domain. Clicks and scans are unlimited, so it is the creation limit that binds. A team publishing a handful of campaign links a week passes it in days.

  2. 02

Branded links start at the third paid rung

The Core plan is USD 120 a year, billed annually only, and gives 100 links a month but no custom domain. A complimentary custom domain starts at Growth, USD 29 a month for 500 links and 4 months of click and scan data. Premium, at USD 199 a month for 3,000 links and a year of data, lists city-level and device tracking.

  3. 03

You pay per link created, not per click

Because every plan has unlimited clicks, the bill follows how many links and QR codes you make. Teams that generate links by the hundred, for example per email or per product, outgrow a plan on creation volume while analytics sit idle. Tools priced by tracked clicks or by site behave differently.

When Bitly is still the right choice

Bitly remains the right choice for a small number of high-value links with a widely recognised name, where unlimited clicks and scans and a simple dashboard matter more than link volume. Its Enterprise plan adds SSO, advanced permissions and a stated 99.99% uptime. If you create under a hundred links a month and do not need your own domain, the cheaper plans are enough and switching saves little.

05

What moving off Bitly involves

  1. 01

Existing short links are the real lock-in

Every bit.ly link already published keeps working only while the account does. Moving to another tool means new links from now on, while the old ones stay on Bitly. Keep a minimal plan for as long as old campaigns, printed QR codes and email archives still send traffic, or re-point them if you have your own domain.

  2. 02

Bring a domain, not a tool

If you move to your own custom domain, new links can later move between providers without breaking. Set that up first, test redirects on the new tool, and export Bitly click data before you downgrade, since history is limited to 30 days on Free and Core and 4 months on Growth.

Questions about replacing Bitly

6 answers
What does Bitly's free plan include?

5 links and 2 QR codes a month, 2 custom landing pages, unlimited clicks and scans, and 30 days of click and scan data. It has no custom domain.

How much does Bitly cost?

Core is USD 120 a year (annual billing only), Growth USD 29 a month, Premium USD 199 a month. Enterprise is quoted. Annual figures are USD 348 for Growth and USD 2,388 for Premium.

Which Bitly plan includes a custom domain?

Growth includes a complimentary custom domain, and Premium and Enterprise include custom domains too. Free and Core do not.

How long does Bitly keep click data?

30 days on Free and Core, 4 months on Growth and one year on Premium, per its pricing page.

Can I self-host a link shortener instead?

Yes. Shlink, YOURLS and Kutt are all MIT-licensed and self-hostable, and Kutt also runs a hosted instance. You take on hosting, backups and abuse handling.

Do old Bitly links break if I leave?

We have not found a vendor statement either way, so assume short links on the bit.ly domain depend on keeping the account. Links on your own custom domain can be re-pointed.
