Google Maps alternatives: 11 maps and navigation apps tools compared

People look for a Google Maps alternative when they want a route to keep working without a signal, results without paid pins, or a map whose maker does not also run an advertising business. The replacements split into offline-first apps built on OpenStreetMap data, phone-maker maps, traffic-first drivers' apps and transit planners.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Google Maps in our maps and navigation apps ranking are Apple Maps, HERE WeGo and Organic Maps. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Apple Maps if you use an iPhone and mainly want a Google Maps replacement that needs no account. All 11 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Maps and Navigation Apps in 2026, and each says where it differs from Google Maps.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Google Maps

#12 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking

  • Pricing: Ad-supported consumer app; ads appear as pins in results
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: People who want one app for places, reviews, transit and driving
  • Not for: Buyers who rank independence or offline travel first
01

Why buyers look past Google Maps

  1. 01

    Offline maps come with conditions

Google's help page says offline maps cannot be downloaded in some countries or regions because of contractual limits, that downloaded areas must be updated before they expire, and that navigation works only while the whole route sits inside the downloaded area. Offline, transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable, and so are traffic and alternate routes for driving.

  2. 02

Paid placements sit inside search results

On Google's search help page, results appear as red mini-pins or dots, and the square pins are ads. A person who wants a plain list of places has to learn to tell the two kinds apart. Several alternatives below state that they carry no ads at all, while others, such as Citymapper, say they place advertising.

  3. 03

    Newer features arrive unevenly

The Google Maps product page promotes Gemini capabilities and an Immersive Navigation mode, and marks at least one recommendation feature as available only in the US and India. Someone who navigates elsewhere may be reading a feature list that does not describe the app on their phone.

What each one does differently

Apple Maps

United States · No price listed on the vendor page; app for Apple devices

Apple's product page says Maps has no sign-in, so your trips are not tied to an Apple Account, and it covers driving, transit, walking and cycling with CarPlay and Apple Watch. The page mentions no Android version and no offline mode, and its detailed city views name four cities.

Switch from Google Maps if you use an iPhone and mainly want a Google Maps replacement that needs no account.

HERE WeGo

Netherlands · Free app with no paid tier described on the product page

A free app and journey planner from HERE Global B.V. in Eindhoven for car, bike, public transport and walking, with country maps you can download. Offline routing needs the offline toggle switched on, and HERE admits some features do not yet work with CarPlay.

Switch from Google Maps if you want one free app for all four travel modes with downloadable country maps.

HERE WeGo, #4 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking →

Organic Maps

Estonia · Free app funded by donations and institutional grants

Free, built on OpenStreetMap data, with code under the Apache 2.0 licence and funding from donations and grants. The site states no ads, no tracking and no data collection, and the whole feature list works offline. Live traffic does not appear in that list, which is the trade for the privacy claims.

Switch from Google Maps if you walk, cycle or hike offline and want an open-source app with no account.

OsmAnd

Netherlands · Free version with a map-download cap; lifetime purchase and subscriptions published

OsmAnd B.V. in Amstelveen publishes its code under GPLv3 and sells builds on top. The free app allows 7 map downloads; OsmAnd+ is a EUR 69.99 lifetime purchase, Maps+ is EUR 14.99 for 12 months, and Pro is EUR 5.99 monthly or EUR 39.99 yearly. Android Auto works only in Google Play builds.

Switch from Google Maps if you want detailed OpenStreetMap maps and are willing to pay once for the full app.

Magic Earth

Netherlands · Essential tier plus annual Premium; 14-day trial in the app stores

From Magic Lane in Amsterdam, with an Essential tier and a Premium tier. Offline maps, CarPlay, Android Auto and real-time traffic are Premium features, sold as an annual store subscription with a 14-day trial or as a one-year web licence for a single device. The company says it does not track movements.

Switch from Google Maps if you want turn-by-turn driving with traffic from a company that states it does not profile users.

TomTom App

Netherlands · Download at no cost per the product page; no subscription terms stated there

TomTom's own page presents a free download built around live traffic and a speed camera database of more than 150,000 cameras in Europe. EV navigation is Android only, truck routing sits in the separate GO Expert app, and the page names no offline mode or plan terms.

Switch from Google Maps if you drive daily and care mainly about traffic and speed camera alerts.

Mapy.com

Czech Republic · No-cost version limited to one offline country; annual Premium only

Operated by Seznam.cz in Prague and strong on outdoor use. The free version keeps one country of offline maps at a time, and Premium, billed only yearly with automatic renewal, makes offline maps unlimited. Traffic-aware car routing is listed for the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Austria only.

Switch from Google Maps if you hike or cycle in Central Europe and can live with one offline country.

Mapy.com, #5 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking →

Sygic GPS Navigation

Slovakia · Premium+ tier sold via vendor e-shop and app stores; amounts not on the product page

A Bratislava company, part of the Eurowag Group, selling car navigation that works offline with speed camera warnings, CarPlay, Android Auto and a Motorbike Mode. The product page shows no prices and sends you to an e-shop, so the cost of Premium+ has to be read there.

Switch from Google Maps if you want driving-focused offline navigation and a motorbike mode.

Sygic GPS Navigation, #6 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking →

Waze

Israel · Free app; revenue comes from ads sold through Google Ads

Waze describes itself as designed exclusively for private motor vehicles and motorcycles, with hazard reports from its drivers. It is owned by Google, so it is not an exit from Google, and it needs an active internet connection to calculate routes and update traffic.

Switch from Google Maps if you only drive, want crowd-reported hazards, and are not leaving Google behind.

Waze, #9 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking →

Citymapper

United Kingdom · Advertising-funded app; former CLUB tier folded into all users

A public transport planner from Citymapper Limited in London, now a subsidiary of Via. Version 11 made former CLUB features free for everyone, including mixed routes and step-free routes. Its coverage follows the cities it supports, and its privacy notice says advertising partners receive device identifiers.

Switch from Google Maps if most of your journeys are by metro, bus or train in a supported city.

Citymapper, #8 of 12 in our maps and navigation apps ranking →

Bing Maps

United States · No price listed on the consumer product page

Microsoft's consumer page lists road maps, aerial views, street-side imagery, directions for driving, walking and transit, and traffic. It names no offline mode. The developer product, Bing Maps for Enterprise, is closed to new customers and ends on 30 June 2028, so it is no base for a new build.

Switch from Google Maps if you want a browser map with aerial imagery and are already in the Microsoft ecosystem.

When Google Maps is still the right choice

Google Maps stays the sensible choice if you rely on a single app for driving, transit, walking and cycling, and you are online most of the time. Its offline limits matter little to someone who never leaves coverage, and it is the only app in this list whose product page promotes Gemini features and an Immersive Navigation mode. If you work inside Google's ecosystem already, switching removes nothing you were paying for.

05

What moving off Google Maps involves

  1. 01

Rebuild your saved places by hand

Each alternative stores places in its own way. Organic Maps imports bookmarks in KML, KMZ, GPX and GeoJSON, and OsmAnd lists GPX import and export, so those two can take files. Apple Maps, HERE WeGo and Magic Earth do not state a route for importing a Google list on the pages we read, so assume you will re-save favourites.

  2. 02

Download maps before the first trip

Offline-first apps only work offline once the regions are on the phone. Mapy.com's free version holds one country, OsmAnd's free version allows 7 downloads, and Google's own offline areas expire, so check each limit before travel and not at the roadside.

  3. 03

Check the car connection you rely on

CarPlay and Android Auto support differs. Magic Earth lists both under Premium, OsmAnd supports Android Auto only in Google Play builds, and HERE says some features are not yet compatible with CarPlay. Test the dashboard link before you delete Google Maps.

Questions about replacing Google Maps

6 answers
Which Google Maps alternative works best offline?

Organic Maps states that it supports 100 percent of its features without an internet connection. OsmAnd, HERE WeGo, Mapy.com, Sygic and Magic Earth Premium also offer offline maps, each with its own limits on downloads, plans or accounts.

Is there a free alternative with no ads?

Organic Maps says it is free with no ads and no tracking. HERE WeGo is described as a free app, and TomTom offers a free download. OsmAnd's free version is ad-free according to its own comparison table but is limited to 7 map downloads.

Is Waze a way to leave Google?

No. Waze says it is owned by Google, and its advertising inventory is part of Google Ads, so it changes the interface without changing the owner.

What does an OsmAnd licence cost?

Its purchase page lists OsmAnd+ at EUR 69.99 once, Maps+ at EUR 14.99 for 12 months, and OsmAnd Pro at EUR 5.99 per month or EUR 39.99 per year, in US and Europe pricing.

Which alternative is best for public transport?

Citymapper is built around transit and lists step-free and wheelchair-accessible routes in 20 regions. HERE WeGo and Google also cover public transport, while Waze states that it is for private motor vehicles and motorcycles only.

Where is Google Maps' maker based?

Google's privacy policy names Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, California, as the controller for users of its services.
