Adobe XD alternatives: 12 wireframing and prototyping tools compared

Teams look for an Adobe XD alternative because the product sits in maintenance mode: Adobe states it is no longer investing in new features, only fixes. Most move to a design editor with active development, a prototyping specialist, or a lighter wireframe tool, depending on how much of XD they actually used.

Short answer: The first three alternatives to Adobe XD in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking are Figma, Penpot and Sketch. Places 1 to 3 go to challengers, vendors outside the best-known brands in a category, wherever the category has them; the established names follow from place 4 in their ranked order. Choose Figma if you want the editor most XD teams were already weighing, and can budget per seat type. All 12 alternatives below are ranked products from Best Wireframing and Prototyping Tools in 2026, and each says where it differs from Adobe XD.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this site; it never changes what we say about a product. How that works.

Adobe XD

#13 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking

  • Pricing: No price on the XD product page we could read; Adobe lists a Buy now link
  • Established in: United States
  • Built for: Teams maintaining existing XD screens and prototypes that rarely change
  • Not for: Teams starting a new design system or needing active development
01

Why buyers look past Adobe XD

  1. 01

Adobe says the product is frozen

Adobe's own XD page says the app is in maintenance mode, and its FAQ says Adobe is not shipping new features, only bug fixes plus security and privacy updates for existing customers. It also promises a significant notice period before support ends, but gives no date. A design system cannot grow on a tool that has stopped growing.

  2. 02

A file format that others read slowly

Competing editors rarely list XD among their import formats. Figma's import article names Sketch, Figma, Office and image files, not XD, and ProtoPie lists XD on its pricing page under UI design tool integrations without describing limits. Expect to convert components by hand.

  3. 03

    The work behind XD shifted

XD was the quick path from layout to clickable flow. Today that job is split: open-source editors for libraries, specialists for logic and sensors, AI generators for first drafts. Choosing which of these you need is the real decision, more than finding one-to-one parity.

What each one does differently

Figma

United States · Free Starter plan; published per-seat tiers by seat type

Figma is a browser-based design editor with seat types: Professional lists a Full seat at $16 a month, with Dev and Collab seats cheaper, and the free Starter plan keeps unlimited drafts. Its import list names Sketch, Figma and Office files but not XD, so XD files need a conversion step.

Switch from Adobe XD if you want the editor most XD teams were already weighing, and can budget per seat type.

Figma, #12 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Penpot

Spain · Free Professional plan; published paid tiers; self-host option

Penpot is open source under MPL-2.0 and built for self-hosting, made by Kaleidos in Spain. Its Professional plan is $0 per user, Unlimited costs $7 per editor capped at $175 a month. Its pages did not state import details for XD files, so test a real file first.

Switch from Adobe XD if files must live on your own servers or in open formats rather than a vendor cloud.

Penpot, #2 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Sketch

Netherlands · Published per-editor subscriptions or a one-time Mac-only licence; 30-day trial

Sketch B.V. sells the Mac editor as a Standard subscription at $12 per editor a month billed yearly, with unlimited free viewers who comment in a browser. A $120 Mac-only licence includes one year of updates but no collaboration. Editing is not available on Windows.

Switch from Adobe XD if your designers all use Macs and a one-off licence appeals more than a subscription.

Sketch, #3 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Axure RP

United States · Published per-user subscriptions; Enterprise quoted

Axure goes deeper than XD ever did on conditions, variables and documentation, which is why analysts use it. Pro is $29 per user a month, Team $49 with co-authoring, and Cloud publishing plus unlimited reviewers come with every subscription. Perpetual licences are no longer sold.

Switch from Adobe XD if your prototypes must behave like the real product, with logic and written specs.

Axure RP, #6 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

ProtoPie

South Korea · Free plan; published Basic and Pro tiers; Enterprise quoted

ProtoPie layers interaction on screens imported from other design tools and lists native device sensors, voice and ProtoPie Connect for car and hardware tests. Basic is $25 for one seat, Pro is $47 per editor, and Connect Core is a $20 add-on per user.

Switch from Adobe XD if the prototype has to react to sensors, voice or physical hardware, not only taps.

ProtoPie, #9 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Justinmind

Not stated by the vendor · Free plan with one project; published per-editor tiers and perpetual licences

Justinmind installs as an application and sells both subscriptions ($19 Standard, $29 Professional, $59 Enterprise per editor a month) and perpetual licences at $295 and $455, with updates after year one at 20% of list. Enterprise runs collaboration on internal servers.

Switch from Adobe XD if you prefer an installed tool with an owned licence over a browser subscription.

Justinmind, #5 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Balsamiq

Italy · Published per-editor tiers billed monthly or annually; 14-day trial

Balsamiq is intentionally low-fidelity. Pricing counts editors and projects instead of boards: $16, $24 or $35 per editor a month on annual billing for 10, 100 or 400 projects, while reviewers are free. It is not the tool for polished visual design.

Switch from Adobe XD if your XD files were mostly early layouts and many stakeholders only need to comment.

Balsamiq, #1 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Moqups

Romania · Free plan with two projects; published per-seat tiers

Moqups combines wireframes, diagrams and prototypes in the browser. The free plan allows one seat, two projects and 400 objects per project; paid tiers add guests, roles and live collaboration. A full project exports as an offline HTML viewer, useful behind firewalls.

Switch from Adobe XD if a browser tool that also draws diagrams matters more than pixel-level visual polish.

Moqups, #4 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Uizard

Denmark · Free plan; published Pro and Business tiers; Enterprise quoted

Uizard generates screens from prompts and turns them into clickable mockups. Its free plan allows three generations a month; Pro, $12 a month billed annually, gives 500 and adds React and CSS handoff. Manual control over large systems is weaker than in a design editor.

Switch from Adobe XD if speed from idea to clickable mockup matters more than detailed manual layout.

Uizard, #8 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Visily

Not stated by the vendor · Free Starter plan; published per-editor tiers

Visily sells AI-assisted wireframing aimed at non-designers. Its site renders client-side, so we could not read its current prices or limits on 29 October 2026 and state none; check its pricing page before shortlisting it.

Switch from Adobe XD if the people replacing XD are product managers rather than trained designers.

Visily, #7 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

Whimsical

United States · Free plan; published per-editor tiers; viewers always free

Whimsical is primarily a flowchart and board tool with AI wireframes from a text prompt. Pro is $10 and Business $20 per editor a month billed annually, viewers are always free, and the free plan caps new board objects and watermarks exports.

Switch from Adobe XD if wireframes are one part of a workspace that is mostly flows and documents.

Whimsical, #10 of 13 in our wireframing and prototyping tool ranking →

MockFlow

India · Basic tier at no cost for personal use; paid tiers per editor

MockFlow bundles WireframePro with diagrams and whiteboards in every plan. The free Basic plan is for personal and nonprofit use, one editor, four projects, 500 components; commercial work needs Plus or Max. It does not specialise in advanced prototype logic.

Switch from Adobe XD if a single subscription for wireframes, boards and diagrams suits a small team.

When Adobe XD is still the right choice

Staying on XD is defensible for a small team that already owns it, has finished projects in the format, and only needs to maintain screens that rarely change. Adobe has set no end-of-support date, so export what you need and plan the exit rather than rushing it. Starting a new design system in a frozen tool is the case we would advise against.

05

What moving off Adobe XD involves

  1. 01

    Export before you decide

Assets, specs and PNG or SVG exports keep working in any tool, whereas XD prototypes and component states do not. Take stock of what depends on the file itself and keep a copy of the original XD documents in an archive.

  2. 02

    Rebuild components, not screens

Screens redraw quickly; shared libraries, states and spacing rules are what took years to grow. Rebuild the library first in the new tool, then rebuild screens by priority, and expect interactions to be rewritten with each tool's own logic.

  3. 03

    Check the seat model

Alternatives bill per editor, per seat type or per project, and viewers are free in some and paid in others. Count editors, reviewers and developers separately before comparing price lists.

Questions about replacing Adobe XD

6 answers
Is Adobe XD discontinued?

Not formally. Adobe's page says XD is in maintenance mode, which its FAQ describes as no ongoing development or new features, with fixes and security updates continuing. No end-of-support date was published on the pages we could read.

What is the closest free alternative to Adobe XD?

Penpot has a free Professional plan at $0 per user and can be self-hosted. Figma has a free Starter plan, Moqups and Uizard have free tiers with project or generation caps, and Justinmind's free plan covers one project.

Can I import Adobe XD files into Figma?

Figma's import article lists Sketch, Figma files, Office and image formats, and does not mention XD. Plan on manual rebuilding or checking for a converter before committing.

Which alternative is best for animated prototypes?

ProtoPie and Axure go deepest on interaction. ProtoPie lists device sensors, voice and Connect for hardware tests, while Axure covers conditions and variables with documentation. Figma covers most screen-based flows.

Which tool replaces XD on a Mac-only team?

Sketch is Mac-native and offers a one-off $120 licence with one year of updates, though collaboration needs a subscription. Windows users can only view and comment on Sketch files in a browser.

Is there a wireframing tool for non-designers?

Balsamiq keeps a deliberately rough look and unlimited free reviewers. Whimsical and MockFlow cover boards and wireframes in one workspace, and Uizard generates screens from prompts.
